I had more fun putting together this list than most. Unlike this year when UNC was a clear favorite before the season and before the tournament, next year certainly looks much more interesting. A host of talented freshmen should be a major boon to the overall quality talent of the top teams, and there's more than enough solid players returning. Outside of Blake Griffin and the UNC guys, there's no one who the average college basketball fan will particularly miss next year.

It goes without saying that a lot can change in coming weeks as final Draft decisions are made and the final recruits get hired by their respective programs. As I allude to, adding Xavier Henry could put Kansas over the top.. then again John Wall could shake things up as well.

Definitely post your thoughts on places where you agree or differ.. there's certainly many debates to be had.

Kansas

I'm going with Kansas as my preseason #1. Even without Xavier Henry I'd give them consideration for #1 with Collns and Aldrich back. However, if Duke ends up with John Wall I may have to reconsider.

Its about time villanova started getting some respect, dont forget about the 6'11" PF coming in along with the rest of the #1 recruiting class in the nation

Duke won't be #1 if they lose Henderson (aka the only guy on the team who can create his own shot).

When will you learn CHN???

Utah State loses just one senior, returns nine players who all played significant roles, four starters, all from a team who won 30 games, had a top 25 RPI this past year, and dominated a high-major conference.

I would have thought that maybe you would have learned your lesson on Utah State after writing them off and ranking them No. 124 preseason this past year after they lost Jaycee Carroll, along with the starting PG and the sixth man.

Generally when teams return four starters from an already solid team, they will be improved the next year, yet somehow they drop from No. 35 to out of the Top 50?

The WAC is a high major

The WAC is a high major congerence??? LOL

Don't think so.

The MWC, A10, MVC, CUSA and maybe even the Horizon League were better than the WAC last year. Look at the league rpi or kenpom.

The lowly WAC is a pretty loooooong way from being a high major. But thanks for making me laugh.

Anonymous's picture

If your looking at the wac....

Look for the team that nobody talks about. NMSU not only is bringing back the whole team including the leading scorer in the wac and the only player from the wac to average a double double, but its a team that should have won the wac tourney but gave it away due to inexperience. It should read more like 49. Look out for jahmar young and wendell mckines!!!

Anonymous's picture

Duke

Duke won't be number 1 with or without henderson. Duke needs Wall to be number one and even if they get him kansas is still number one, especially if the get henry and/or wall themselves

Stephen VanDeMark's picture

Pittsburgh

I'm going to pick Pittsburgh as my preseason #1 because Levance Fields has good shooting abilities and Sam Young and Jermaine Dixon are potential All-Americans in 2009-2010 because they will need to score more points than any other played in the history of Men's College Basketball.

Preseason Party Spectacular

Good day, Mr. Siegel. I think you have an accurate poll. I like Butler at #10. Since they play in the Horizon League, they might be even higher come season's end. I have to go with Kansas at #1, especially since they just brought in Xavier Henry. I like Michigan State at #2. It's still way too early, though. I wish John Wall would decide where to go already. The suspense is killing me. Keep up the good journalism.

Shawn Siegel's picture

Apologies this went in the

Apologies this went in the spambox at first Jeff. The filter can overdo it at times. Henry probably does push kansas to #1 for me. I'll be doing another update coming up once the final recruits make their decisions (they need to get on with it already..)

Here is my Presaeson Top 10 in Men's College Basketball: #1 Pittsburgh, #2 Connecticut, #3 Kansas, #4 Oklahoma, #5 North Carolina, #6 Syracuse, #7 Lousiville, #8 Duke, #9 Wake Forest, #10 UCLA

Tough Matchups

These are some of the toughest matchups in NCAA Men's Basketball. Pittsburgh/Louisville is one of them, Ohio State and Illinois is another one then UConn/Georgetown and Villanova/Marquette.

diddy's picture

Kansas, Villanova, Michigan St...then who knows

Kansas is obviously #1 with X Henry, Johnson, Robinson and Withey joining a team that lost no one.

Villanova #2, if Reynolds returns, as he likely will. They'll kill teams with waves of perimeter/wing players and their new big, Yarou, is a monster.

Michigan St #3, alot of good players returning. Roe is a key guy.

UNC #4 on strength of absurd frontcourt, guards are suspect though. Drew or Strickland need to come up big. They could use Wall but I dont think they pay more than Calipari.

Kentucky #5, if they add Wall (as expected), and Meeks returns. Patterson is gone. Without Wall and Meeks, they go from Top 5 to unranked.

Purdue #6. Will be very very good if Hummel is healthy.

Duke #7. Without Henderson this team is just devoid of athletes. Cant imagine them giving Kansas or Villanova a competitive game in March.

WVU #8. These guys are 2nd in line to Nova in the Big East. Will be an excellent squad behind Butler, Ebanks, Jones etc.

LVille #9. No Clark or Williams, but Samuels, Knowles, Smith, Siva, Sosa, Jennings are formidable.

UConn #10. Will have a good starting 5 led by Walker, Dyson, Robinson, Majok.

Stephen VanDeMark's picture

Kansas and Villanova in the National Championship game?

I hope that Kansas or Villanova will win the national championship this year.

Pitt??

Stephen Van DeMark,

I assume you are just trying to be a funny guy with all this Pitt crap? I hope so because they are going to stink this yr.

Hilarious posts.

Not.

Stephen VanDeMark's picture

Pittsburgh, Louisville, Syracuse...who'll be #1 this year?

#1 Pittsburgh, Jermaine Dixon has to average more points than any other shooting guard

#2 Connecticut, Coach Jim Calhoun has a lot of respect for his team

#3 Duke, Gerald Henderson could be a potential All-American

#4 Syracuse, the best team looking for a great season

#5 Louisville, Knowles has more of everything

#6 UCLA, they can average a great team this year

#7 North Carolina, Wayne Ellington's shooting capabilities are going to be great this year

#8 Villanova, Scottie Reynolds can average over 30 points a game

#9 Purdue, they are looking to a Big Ten title this year

#10 West Virginia, they can handle it better than other Big East teams

Stephen VanDeMark's picture

Michigan and Michigan State

Michigan/Michigan State is the matchup we're about to see in the middle of next year.

Tennessee in the top 10 is

Tennessee in the top 10 is absolutely ridiculous. They were garbage last year and haven't added anyone note-worthy. Kentcuky, now that Patterson is for sure back and Meeks likely back, adding top-40 players at EVERY position, and adding a top-5 coach HAVE to be in the top-10 at WORST.

Jeff Wright's picture

Kentucky in the top 10 is ridiculous

Although I agree Tennessee is probably not a top 10 team at this point, they are a heck of a lot closer than Kentucky. Tennessee at least showed some promise in some SMALL spots last year. They had great potential that went flat. I'd say top 20 program for sure.

Now to say that Kentucky HAS to be in the top 10 at WORST is pretty ridiculous. KY with Meeks and Patterson ended up 71 in the RPI and wasn't in the conversation for the NCAA tournament last year. I do not know much about their recruiting class, but very rarely do freshman have the ability to raise a program to a top 10 level after not being in NCAA discussions the year before. I am guessing they will be much improved and will break the top 25 with a new coach. Top 10 and beyond, not yet...

Tennessee at #7 without Smith (whom is assumed to be gone) is down-right ridiculous.

Kentucky at #20 with the amount they are bringing back is also as uneducated.

Florida above Mississippi State, after Florida is losing Calathes?? I realize this was done before some NBA announcements, but with the addition of Sidney and return of Varnado, MSU is at least a Top 15 team if not Top 10.
