Position: PF/C
Height: 6”9”
Weight: 233lbs
Accolades:
Fourth Team Parade All-American (high school) (04), MVP North Carolina
East-West All-Star Game (04), Honorable Mention All-ACC (06), ACC
All-Defensive Team (06).
Scouting Report:
A developing big man with a huge wingspan and great shot blocking
ability.
Strengths:
Shot blocking – Simmons has an enormous wingspan and is a menace to the
opposition’s shots. He blocked 8 shots versus Iowa, and 7 versus Miami
and Duke this year. Nice hands – can handle passes down low. Good
passing skills for a big man. Averaged almost 12 points a game despite
not really being a focal point in the Wolfpack’s offense (averaged less
than 7 shots per game).
Weaknesses:
Needs to develop
some go to post moves. Isn’t weak or skinny but needs to add strength
and bulk to his long frame. Not very experienced – didn’t play many
minutes his freshman year and has never been the team’s go to scorer.
Projected 2006 Draft
Range:
Late lottery to mid first round pick.
Consensus:
NBA teams are
always on the look out for quality big men, and Simmons definitely falls
into that category. His long frame will hinder many of his opposition’s
shot attempts in the NBA, and with a still developing body and offensive
game the sky is the limit for him.
