Scouting Report:
A gunner.
The best shooter in college basketball. Range goes well beyond the NBA
3 point line. Deadly coming off of picks due to his quick release and
elevation. Can also get his shot off over defenders because of his
quick trigger. Has improved at putting the ball on the floor and
driving to the basketball. Clutch performer who is mentally tough due
to hostile crowds at every away game (many call him the most hated Duke
player of all time) and defenses geared to stop him.
Strengths:
Shooting. Mental toughness. Competitive fire. Using screens-finding a
way to get open and get his shot off.
Weaknesses:
Average quickness and athleticism. Small for a 2 guard. Tweener – too
small and unathletic to guard NBA 2 guards, too slow to cover NBA point
guards. Defense needs improvement.
Projected 2006 Draft
Range: Middle
first round pick.
Consensus: Redick’s
unbelievable range and scoring ability will definitely intrigue most NBA
teams. However, he will need help to get his shot off in the NBA where
he will be guarded by much larger and athletic men. Will struggle
defending NBA guards due to his size and lack of NBA-level quickness.
Still, will be very valuable to a team running him off of picks (like
Detroit’s Richard Hamilton) or a team with an inside presence that is
doubled down on frequently (leaving J.J. open behind the arc).
