2006 NBA DRAFT PROFILE

NBA Draft: Jose Juan Barea

College: Northeastern

Class: Senior

Stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=11643

Position: PG

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 170lbs

Accolades: All-State (Florida – high school) (02), America East All-Rookie Team (03), America East All-Tournament Team (03), Third Team America East All-Conference Team (03), First Team America East All-Conference Team (04), Under 21 Centrobasket Tournament MVP (Puerto Rico) (04), First Team America East All-Conference Team (05), Honorable Mention AP All-American (06), CAA Player of the Year (06), CAA All-Conference First Team (06).

Scouting Report: A small, lightning quick guard who put up massive numbers in college.

Strengths: Very quick player – can get to where he wants to go on the court.  Hardnosed, tough player.  Put up big stats all four years in school – averaged 20 plus points the last 3 seasons, also put up 8 assists and 4 boards per game this year.  Lots of experience running a team – he averaged 33 minutes per game for his college career.

Weaknesses: Very small player – doesn’t even reach the 6-foot mark.  Turnover prone.  Three point shot is still very inconsistent.  Playing in a small conference means he didn’t play against the top competition in the college game.

Projected 2006 Draft Range: Late first round – early second round pick.

Consensus:  Barea was the star on the Portsmouth Invitational (draft prospect camp) in April and looks like he has guaranteed to hear his name called in the draft in June.  Whether his small stature, limited big time playing experience and hot and cold outside shot transfers well to the pro game remains to be seen.
