NBA Draft: Leon Powe

College: California

Class: Sophomore

Stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=15302

Position: PF

Height: 6”8”

Weight: 240 lbs

Accolades:  Third Team Parade All-American (high school) (02), First Team Parade All-American (high school) (03), Gatorade California Player of the Year (high school) (03), McDonald’s All-American (high school) (03), Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (04), All-Pac-10 Team (04), Second Team AP All-American (06), All-Pac-10 Team (06).

Scouting Report:  An undersized power forward who put up massive numbers his sophomore year.

Strengths:  Very strong down low – can score with his back to the basket and corral rebounds.  Great rebounder – became the first freshman in Pac-10 history to lead the league in rebounding.  Great hands.  Decent mid range jumper.  Is a 20 point, 10 board threat every time he walks onto a college court.

Weaknesses:  Too short to play power forward in the NBA – may actually only be 6’7”.  Injury worries – has already had two knee surgeries.  Inexperienced – is 22 years old but has only played 2 years in college.  Needs to get range on his jumper back beyond the college three point line to show he has the potential to play the three spot in the pros.

Projected 2006 Draft Range: Late first round to early second round pick.

Consensus:  Powe needs another year in school to show that he is completely healthy and to expand his game.  Considering he probably isn’t going to grow any taller at this point in his life, Powe needs to add ball handling skills and a deeper jump shot to improve his NBA chances.
