Scouting Report:
Can do it all at
both ends of the floor but frustratingly doesn’t always. Great size and
skills tailor made for the NBA.
Strengths:
Good high arcing jump shot allows him to get it off over defenders. Has
shooting range well back behind the 3 arc. Great athlete can take the
ball to the rack with authority. Also uses his size, speed and
athleticism to steal a lot of balls and swat a lot of shots. Will be
able to use his size and high released jumper to score easily over NBA
small forwards.
Weaknesses:
Inconsistent. Will follow up a 20+ point game with a single digit
effort. Lack of aggression/competitiveness. Disappears during games
(sometimes for a whole game) and defers to his teammates. Has shot the
ball very poorly this season, especially behind the 3-line.
Projected 2006 Draft Range: Top 3 pick.
Consensus:
While Gay will most definitely be a very high draft pick, he
is far from a polished product. He is familiar to Marvin Williams’
situation last year (a more talented version of Williams) – a player
being drafted high due to their “upside”. Still, he has all the tools
to be a big time pro.
