NBA Draft: Shelden Williams

College: Duke

Class: Senior

Stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=11146

Position: PF/C

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 250lbs

Accolades: ACC All-Freshman Honorable Mention (03), Second Team All-ACC (04), ACC All-Defensive Team (04), ACC All-Tournament Team (04), Honorable Mention All-American (04), Third Team All-American (05), ACC Defensive Player of the Year (05), First Team All-ACC (05), First Team ACC All-Tournament Team (05), ACC All-Defensive Team (05), National Defensive Player of the Year (05)

Scouting Report: As the accolades above show, defense if Shelden’s strength.  Rebounding, blocking shots and stealing are all strengths of his.  Also quite skilled on the offensive end in the paint.  “The Landlord” owns the paint.

Strengths:  Defense.  Rebounding.  Blocking shots.  Physical game – very strong.  Beast inside the paint.

Weaknesses: Needs to work on his outside game for the NBA.  Will have to play 4 in the NBA since 6’9” is a bit short for the center spot (even though he has a long wingspan).

Projected 2006 Draft Range:  Top 20 pick.

Consensus:  His game is reminiscent of Alonzo Mourning, especially on the defensive end.  Will have to work on his face up game and get used to guarding quicker 4 men in the NBA.  His defense will be his calling card in the pros, but he should be an efficient scorer also.  Has the chance to have an All-Star career, at the very worst will be a defensive beast.
