NBA Draft: Steven Smith

College: LaSalle

Class: Sophomore

Stats: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=11536

Position: SF/PF

Height: 6’9”

Weight: 225lbs

Accolades: Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team (03), Third Team Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team (04), AP Honorable Mention All-American (05), Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year (05), First Team All-Big 5 (05), First Team Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team (05).

Scouting Report: A high scoring player with an NBA small forward body.

Strengths: Scoring.  Smith has been a big time scorer all four years in college.  Playing a lot of 4 in college has given him a great post game with numerous quick moves with his back to the basket.  Also is a good mid range shooter and can hit the 3.  His size allows him to get his shot off over the defender.  Gets to the foul line often and is a decent shooter from the charity stripe.  Very solid rebounder all 4 years also.

Weaknesses: Needs to shoot the 3 for a higher percentage.  Playing mostly post in college he needs to work on guarding 3 men on the perimiter.  Turns the ball over far too much for playing 3/4 in college.  Not good enough beating men off the dribble that he will need to be to play the wing in the NBA.

Projected 2006 Draft Range: Mid to late second round pick.

Consensus:  Smith could be a very solid second round pick for an NBA team.  He has a great NBA body and could even play some 4 if needed.  If he improves his outside shooting and dribble drive moves he may stick around for a while in the L.
