NBA Draft Player Profile: Ryan Gomes
by
Dale Money
Averaged 18.9 points, 9.4 board's, and an impressive .870 FT%. This 6-7
junior
small forward is contemplating entering the draft a little early. Gomes
has led
the way for the Providence Friars, ranking first on the club in scoring,
rebounds, and steals.
Just a junior, Gomes began the year recording a double-double against
Hofstra
and added a season best 28 against powerhouse Texas. The Waterbury,
Conneticut
native was named to the Wooden All-America Team, AP First Team
All-America, and First Team All-Big East
Gomes joined former Friars Eric Murdock (three times in 1991) and Jamel
Thomas
(four times in 1999) as the only players at Providence to earn BIG EAST
Player
of the Week three times in one season. In his first career game against
South Carolina on 12/3/01, he collected 15 points to go along with eight
rebounds.
If Gomes decides to enter the draft, he projects to be a late 1st Round
selection.
