Missouri Valley ConferenceIn recent seasons, the Missouri Valley Conference has had great success at home in non-conference play, and the league is at it again, recording a 7-1 home start in the first week of the season.  In the past four seasons (not counting this year), the league has combined for a 226-33 (.873) mark at home in non-conference play.  The results have translated into 20 post-season bids (including 10 NCAA trips, nine NITs and a CBI entry).

SIU Signs Three: Barham, Brown, Meyers

Southern IllinoisCARBONDALE, Ill. - Saluki men's basketball head coach Chris Lowery announced his three-man 2008 recruiting class on Monday, which features a point guard, a shooting guard and a power forward.

Kendal Brown (Evansville, Ind./ William Henry Harrison H.S.) is a 5-foot-9 point guard, who averaged 15.4 points, 5.3 assists and 2.6 steals last season. A cousin of head coach Chris Lowery, who plays for Lowery's high school alma mater, he was a first team all-league pick in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference last season.

Creighton Tops New Mexico 82-75

CreightonOMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton used a 17-0 run in the final 3:30 to overcome a late nine-point deficit and beat New Mexico, 82-75 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 16,107 at Qwest Center Omaha.

Creighton (1-0) led 4-2 in the opening minutes but would not lead again until consecutive three-pointers from P'Allen Stinnett gave CU a 76-72 lead with 43 seconds to play. Stinnett had eight of his career-high 30 points during the 17-0 run, while teammate Booker Woodfox had the other nine in the scoring binge. Woodfox finished with 26 points, four more than his previous best.

Illinois State Tops Wright State, 69-61

DAYTON, Ohio - Behind a balanced scoring attack with all five Illinois State starters in double-figure points, the Redbirds led from the first basket until the final whistle and claimed a 69-61 non-conference season-opening victory over Wright State at the Ervin J. Nutter Center Saturday night.

 

With the victory, the Redbirds claimed their third-straight non-conference road victory, dating back to last season, and improved to 1-0 on the season.

 

Butler Knocks Off Drake in Opener

ButlerDES MOINES, IOWA - Butler held Drake to just 31.1 percent shooting from the floor to spoil the head coaching debut of Mark Phelps en route to a 58-48 victory in the season opener for both teams.


It was a rematch of the classic 2008 ESPNU Bracket Busters game which pitted then No. 16 ranked Drake at then No. 8 ranked Butler.

SIU Tops UMASS in Quality Early Season Battle

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Despite opening up a 15-point first half lead, the UMass men's basketball team couldn't hold off a charging Southern Illinois Salukis squad, which used a late 12-0 run to turn a two-point deficit into a 10-point advantage on its way to an 80-73 win on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Minutemen have been eliminated from the 2K Sports Classic, falling one win shy of a return trip to Madison Square Garden where last season's memorable NIT run culminated.

Illinois State Adds Pair of Chicago Recruits

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head men's basketball Tim Jankovich announced that Terrence Johnson (North Lawndale College Prep - Chicago) and Zeke Upshaw (University High School - Chicago) each signed National Letters of Intent Wednesday, during the NCAA early-signing period, to continue their education and basketball careers at Illinois State University.
