Isiah Thomas Named New FIU Coach

FIU Director of Athletics Pete Garcia announced today that the Golden Panthers have hired NCAA Champion, two-time NBA Champion and Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas as the school's new men's basketball head coach.

"We are very excited to have such a legendary athlete and proven winner in Isiah Thomas to lead our men's basketball program," Garcia said. "There is no doubt that Isiah will give FIU a tremendous opportunity to take the basketball program to the highest level."

2009 Final FourThe opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament - also known as the greatest four days in sports - provided more than a few lessons. Among them: 1) If your company requires to take furlough days, there's no better time than the first two days of the tournament, and 2) It's amazing how many beers you can fit into a single day when there is basketball on TV all day long. Also, for future reference, be sure to check if the bar has a happy hour, or you may be decidedly unhappy when the check comes.

Ahh...but there were lessons learned on the court as well.

Behind the strength of a 23-4 run, Western Kentucky University (21-8, 15-3 SBC) build itself largest half-time lead of the year and held off a furious Middle Tennessee (17-13, 10-8 SBC) second half surge to hand the Blue Raiders a 68-49 defeat at the Murphy Center on senior night. The win gives the Hilltoppers its seven- straight over its rival and the 2008-09 Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Championship, the school's 41st conference crown (regular season and tournament titles).
