College Football: Louisiana Tech @ #17 Boise State Preview

October 1st, 2008
Boise State

If tonight's WAC opener between #17 Boise State (3-0) and Louisiana Tech (2-1) can match the drama of last night's game, viewers will be in for a treat. Middle Tennessee (2-3, 1-2 Sun Belt) knocked off defending Sun Belt co-champion Florida Atlantic (1-4, 0-1) thanks to a touchdown pass from Joe Craddock to Malcolm Beyah as time expired. The successful point-after gave the Blue Raiders a 14-13 win and their first conference victory of the season.

Connecticut and Pittsburgh gained an early head start in the race for the 2008 BIG EAST title, while four other conference teams picked up wins outside the league in Week 5.

Wow. This weekend offered up much more suspense than many fans expected. Six ranked teams fell to unranked opponents on Saturday, and when the carnage was done three Top 5 teams dropped as well. The biggest surprise? If looking at the sheer result, I'd go with Ole Miss winning at #4 Florida 31-30. As for margin of victory, how good did #8 Alabama look between the hedges in the first half? The Crimson Tide jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead before hanging on to beat #3 Georgia 41-30.

Friday night's game is now over, with a Lawrence Wilson interception return providing the final margin in Connecticut's 26-21 win at Louisville. Even with QB Tyler Lorenzen (foot) and TE Steve Brouse (leg), the Huskies (5-0, 1-0 Big East) were able to hang around due to the solid play of backup quarterback Zach Frazer (8-15 for 89 yards and a touchdown) and two second-half interceptions. Louisville (2-2, 0-1 Big East) also had to deal with some injuries, most notably the ankle injury suffered by QB Hunter Cantwell.

College Football: Oregon State 27, #1 USC 21

On their way to a seemingly automatic trip to the BCS National Title Game by way of the Pac-10 crown, the USC Trojans ran into an unforseen complication:

No one told Oregon State they were supposed to lie down.

College Football: USC at Oregon State Preview

Two games on the schedule tonight, with both games being conference matchups at that. USC gets the national stage again, this time visiting a place that gave them a stunning loss just two seasons ago. And the June Jones Show visits the Louisiana Superdome, but while the offense has shown some spark the defense has been up to its usual standard: inept play. Here's a preview of both games, along with my picks.
