Ruland, Iona announce terms of contract settlement

March 27th, 2007

In a joint written statement released today, Iona College and former head basketball coach Jeff Ruland have come to a mutual agreement on the terms of a contract settlement for the last two years of his contract. In his nine years in New Rochelle, Ruland led his alma mater to three MAAC titles and three NCAA Tournaments.

Ruland reportedly out at Iona

March 22nd, 2007

According to the New York Post, Iona will relieve mens basketball coach Jeff Ruland of his head coaching duties. Ruland, 139-134 in nine seasons at his alma mater, is currently on vacation in Caribbean and any announcement regarding the direction of the program will be delayed until he returns. One year after the Gaels went 23-8 and represented the MAAC in the NCAA Tournament, injuries hit the team hard to the tune of a 2-28 record.

If the report is indeed true, Iona will pay Ruland $1.2 million to buy out the remaining two years of his contract.

Daily Dribble: Wild Saturday Recap

February 4th, 2007
Iona

Wow.. simply wow. College basketball is fun. You can take your Super Bowls and endless weeks of repetitive buildup.. I'll take college basketball any day of the week. Just so happens Saturday is the best day of the week though.. and yesterday was about as wild as it gets. Lets begin our journey..

Florida is crazy good. The Gators have been blowing away the SEC, East or West, home or away, with ease. The Gators are 8-0 in league play, 2 full games ahead of 2nd place Kentucky. These two teams meet next week in Lexington.. but I just don't see the Wildcats winning.

The Gators are one of four teams around the country that are still perfect in conference play. Holy Cross is 9-0 in the Patriot, Winthrop is 9-0 in the Big South, and Memphis is 9-0 in the CUSA.

Daily Dribble: 11/29

Indiana

Nothing like a 54-51 snooze fest to highlight Tuesday's ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Duke eeked out an ugly victory over an Indiana team that deserves credit for hanging in there despite a very poor first half. This game featured a complete lack of frontcourt offense: Duke's three starting forwards combined for 3-12 shooting (Remind me again why McRoberts is a lottery pick?) while Indiana's two bigs were 4-17.

Glad to see Kelvin Sampson's decision to start playing the freshmen Shaw and Bassett more and more. In the long run, this should be a major help for the Hoosiers. Bassett had a career high 16 points, though he showed his inexperience in the closing minutes with one poor shot and then one poorer lack of shot. The lanky Shaw has played 24 minutes the last two games after being a non-factor in the first few.
