USC had asked for an interpretation from the NCAA on whether it was a violation for O.J. Mayo to receive tickets to an NBA game from Carmelo Anthony, an individual with whom he had a pre-existing relationship. USC received an answer from the NCAA earlier today. The NCAA ruled it a violation, therefore at that time USC declared him ineligible and petitioned for his reinstatement. As a condition of his reinstatement, the NCAA said that he had to make a charitable contribution of $460 based on the value of the tickets.

With the constant attention surrounding a handful of freshmen, many other talented newcomers get overlooked. That is the case with this week’s Player of the Week, USC forward Davon Jefferson. The 6-foot-8 rookie doesn’t get much press recognition across the country because of teammate O.J. Mayo, a media magnet who has been covered and followed since he was in middle school. With the New Year brings clarity. Not only has the excruciating bowl season come to an end, allowing us to focus solely on college hoops, with the occasional Patriots hatefest NFL football game mixed in here or there, but with the start of ’08 comes conference play for the BCS leagues.
