A companion to our daily Three Stars of the Day, we present the top three Games of the Night.

 

With the New Year brings clarity. Not only has the excruciating bowl season come to an end, allowing us to focus solely on college hoops, with the occasional Patriots hatefest NFL football game mixed in here or there, but with the start of ’08 comes conference play for the BCS leagues. This means no more North Floridas or Sacramento States or Prairie View A & Ms on the schedule. No, this means we will be treated to a bevy of decent matchups on a nightly basis, providing a meaningful way to discern between squads, rather than wild guessing, or even

Freshmen are heating up in the SEC, as three of them pop up on the All-December list, as opposed to only one on the All-November one.

The little man is playing big for the Gamecocks, including in December with averages of around 18 points, six assists and three steals.

While freshmen have ruled all the other BCS conferences, transfer players in the early going are ruling the SEC.  Two crack this All-November list.

 

There isn’t a lot to talk about this time around. Well, at least if you’re amongst the vast majority that has rightfully conceded this season to the freshmen. We’ve started to see some guys come back to Earth and display the expected inconsistencies that will crop up for most freshmen, but the youngsters are still taking over games with regularity and it seems to be a different one every night. Beasley and Gordon have been trading spots atop the nation’s scoring list and, as Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline wrote awhile ago,

NBA Draft: Derrick Byars

The familiar theme of the tournament continued tonight with the underdogs taking the early lead, followed by the favorites coming back to earn the victory. It happened (again) with Florida and continued throughout the evening with Georgetown and North Carolina overcoming double-digit deficits.
