"Big Dance" Interviews: Northern Colorado's Devon Beitzel & B.J. Hill

Head coach B.J. Hill led the Bears to their first NCAA TournamentRecently CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with two important pieces to the puzzle for the Big Sky champion Northern Colorado Bears, head coach B.J. Hill and guard Devon Beitzel. Beitzel was named Big Sky Player of the Year and also was MVP of the conference tournament, with the Bears beating Montana 65-50 in the title game. Northern Colorado will make their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance this week.

JT: Your scoring went up during each of your four years at Northern Colorado. How have you been able to improve from year to year?

Earlier today CHN writer spent a few minutes with Saint Peter's senior forward Jeron Belin as part of his "Big Dance" interview series. Belin, along with Ryan Bacon, Wesley Jenkins and Nick Leon, have been rewarded for buying into head coach John Dunne's program. The Peacocks last made the NCAA Tournament in 1995. 

Jon Teitel: In 2009 you were named a First Team NJCAA Division II All-American. What did it mean to you to win such an outstanding honor?

Old Dominion is headed back to the NCAA TournamentEarlier today CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with two of the key players for the CAA Tournament champion Old Dominion Monarchs, guard Kent Bazemore and forward Frank Hassell. Hassell was named Most Valuable Player of the conference tournament while Bazemore is the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, and they hope to surpass last year's second-round showing in the NCAA Tournament.

Jim Ferry's Blackbirds have won 13 straight gamesEarlier today CHN writer Jon Teitel spent a few minutes with LIU head coach Jim Ferry, whose Blackbirds beat Robert Morris 85-82 in overtime to win the Northeast Conference title. 27-5 on the season, LIU has the depth to be a problem and they rank among the best teams in America when it comes to getting to the foul line. Forwards Julian Boyd and Jamal Olasewere are two of the key cogs up front, and the first-year point guard tandem of freshman Jason Brickman and South Alabama transfer C.J. Garner has paid off as well.

Recently CHN writer spent some time with Arkansas-Little Rock head coach Steve Shields, whose team won four games in four days to win the Sun Belt conference tournament. Where the Trojans get seeded remains to be seen, but the shot-making ability of senior guard Solomon Bozeman and their five seniors are things opponents will need to account for next week.  

Jon Teitel: How do you go from being an all-conference golfer for your dad Gene at Baylor 25 years ago to winning a conference tournament title as a basketball coach?

Morehead State last went to the Big Dance in 2009Recently CHN writer Jon Teitel spoke with two key members of the OVC champion Morehead State Eagles, forward/center Kenneth Faried and shooting guard Demonte Harper. Faried has won both the Player and Defensive Player awards in the OVC the last two seasons, and all Harper did last week was win the tournament MVP for his play in three Morehead State wins. Look for the Eagles to be a tough matchup for anyone they draw next week.

Both names are quite familiar to basketball fans, even before last night, due to Bozeman beginning his career at USF before transferring and Coach Kleine's playing career in both college and the NBA.

Rick Byrd's Belmont Bruins have won 30 gamesAs we get closer to the NCAA Tournament, CHN writer Jon Teitel will spend some time with players or coaches of teams who have made their way into the field of 68. Today's subject is Belmont head coach Rick Byrd, whose Bruins completed an impressive run in the Atlantic Sun with their conference tournament title game win over North Florida on Saturday. Now 30-4 on the season, Belmont has eleven players averaging at least ten minutes per game and nine average at least five points per game. To say the least there will be concern for whichever team draws the Bruins in the first round.

Talking "On the Shoulders of Giants" with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

The documentary focuses on the Harlem Rens, a professional basketball team during the 1920s and '30s that ranked among the best in the game. Without the Rens many of the players we watch and cheer now wouldn't have the opportunities they currently have.

Doc Meanwell won 8 conference titles at WisconsinIn the most recent installment in his "Coaching Greats" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with the son of the late Walter "Doc" Meanwell. Coach Meanwell led the University of Wisconsin to eight Big Ten championships and three Helms national titles during his time in Madison, moving on to become the school's athletic director before starting his own medical practice.

Jon Teitel: Your father was born in England but came over to America at age 3. Why did your family move across the pond, and how did he get into American sports?
