Jon Teitel's Coaches Interview Series: Former Murray State Head Coach Steve Newton

Newton led Murray State to three NCAA appearancesIn the most recent installment in his coaching greats interview series, CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with former Murray State and South Carolina head coach Steve Newton. Newton's accomplishments include four conference titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances in six seasons at Murray before moving on to transition the Gamecocks into the SEC from the Metro Conference. Now retired from coaching, Newton is running a social marketing business with his wife.

Watson remains UMKC's all-time leading scorerIn the latest installment of his "Forgotten Legends" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Missouri-Kansas City legend Michael Watson. Watson finished his career in 2004 as the school's all-time leading scorer, with one of the highlights being a 54-point performance in a double-overtime win over perennial Summit (then Mid-Continent) power Oral Roberts. After playing overseas Watson retired to become a minister.

In the most recent installment in his coaches interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with former UMES basketball coach Kirkland Hall. Hall has contributed to the school in a number of ways and ranks third in school history with 79 wins. Coach Hall also managed the baseball (school's all-time wins leader) and softball (third in school history in wins) teams during his career at UMES.

Of all the teams you could guess that would hand UNLV their only loss in a 55-game stretch that included the 1990 national title, UCSB likely wouldn't be at the top of the list. But the Gauchos were a more than worthy competitor thanks in large part to Carrick Dehart, who to this day remains one of the best players in school history. During DeHart's time at UCSB the Gauchos made two NCAA Tournament appearances (beating Houston in 1990) and an NIT appearance in between.

In the latest installement in his coaches interview series, CHN writer spent some time with current Rice head coach Ben Braun, who also made stops at Eastern Michigan and Cal. At EMU Coach Braun led the Eagles to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 1991. Now in his second season at Rice, Coach Braun and his staff are looking to build a program that can compete with Memphis atop Conference USA.

As part of his "Forgotten Legends" interview series, CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Northwestern legend Evan Eschmeyer, who ranks as the best rebounder and second-best scorer in school history. Eschmeyer is also the only NU player to ever be named First Team All-Big Ten three consecutive seasons, and he was also named an All-American before playing a few seasons in the NBA.

In his latest coaches interview, CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with former Rider head coach Kevin Bannon, who led the Broncs to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1993 and 1994. From Lawrenceville Coach Bannon went on to Rutgers, where he coached four season before being fired in 2001. Now working in broadcasting as well as two different Mercer County (NJ) commissions (Park and Sports & Entertainment), Coach Bannon has even won an Emmy Award for his broadcasting work.

In the latest installment in his "Forgotten Legends" interview series, CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Samford great Steve Barker. Barker is the Bulldogs' second all-time scorer with a total of 1,902 points and career leader in free throw percentage. Barker is now the head basketball coach at McLean County High School in Kentucky.

In his latest coaches interview, CHN writer Jon Teitel caught up with former Brown and Penn head coach Glen Miller, who is now the Director of Men's Basketball Administration at Connecticut under his college coach (Jim Calhoun). Miller won 93 games at Brown and led the Bears to the NIT in 2003, eventually taking over for Fran Dunphy at Penn and leading the Quakers to the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

In the latest installment in his "Forgotten Legends" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Doug Day, the all-time leading scorer in Radford University history. Day, who is also one of the college basketball's most prolific three-point shooters, is currently the head coach at Blacksburg (VA) High School.
