College Hoops Tuesday: Your Commentary

January 18th, 2010

Tuesday lacks a marquee matchup the caliber of Monday's Texas/Kansas State game but there are some interesting games that could have an impact come Selection Sunday. Purdue hits the road with hopes of ending their three-game losing streak and they'll take on an Illinois squad that saw its' undefeated conference start come to a screeching halt. The big men will likely tell the tale of this contest; JaJuan Johnson's play of late has been well-documented and the Illini look to Mike Tisdale and Mike Davis for their interior baskets. Demetri McCamey is another player who will have to show up for Illinois; when he's doing a good job running the team they're tough to beat.

Clemson and Georgia Tech face off in Atlanta with the Yellow Jackets looking to build upon the momentum gained in their win at North Carolina, but that's been easier said than done for a group that's also lost to Georgia and Virginia. Iman Shumpert had his best game of the season on Saturday and with Clemson PG Demontez Stitt dealing with a sprained foot (if he plays at all; Andre Young gets the start) the sophomore from Chicago could have another standout performance. The key for the Tigers: give the ball to Trevor Booker early and often. That's easy to say on the outside, given the fact that the senior is their best player, but for some reason his teammates can ignore the big fella on offense. Against the likes of Gani Lawal, Zachary Peacock and Derrick Favors Clemson cannot afford to do such a thing and expect to win on the road.

Other games to keep an eye on include Tennessee taking on Alabama in Tuscaloosa, welcoming back the recently suspended Melvin Goins and Cameron Tatum, and Northwestern visiting Ohio State in search of another quality win. But a game that you should look to watch is Northern Iowa's trip to Wichita State. The Panthers have shown themselves to be the class of the Missouri Valley thus far while the Shockers have the best chance of any other team in that league of possibly grabbing an at-large berth. But Gregg Marshall's team will likely need this win in order to keep those hopes alive as well as make sure UNI has someone on their heels the rest of the regular season.

ONE PREDICTION

Georgia Tech over Clemson: The status of Stitt is why I like the Yellow Jackets. With him likely unable to go the keys to the offense will be handed to Andre Young. Not that he's incapable of running the show because he can, but the matchup against Shumpert (and Mfon Udofia) will be a tough one, especially if the Georgia Tech guards are taking care of the basketball. Jackets win what should be a close affair.
