Default Do preseason polls mean anything?

It's an interesting question - this article examines the question from a statistical viewpoint.

That's a nice write up. I happen to think that polls are basically meaningless and I wrote as such last winter:

Polls are a way to get people talking - nothing less, and certainly nothing more.

Good piece. In college basketball they seem to have more of a role as a talking piece; people aren't as afraid to shift based on what they see because they don't want to be "wrong". And since the champ is decided through play, the polls don't have much of an impact on who plays for the title.

If only college football voters could figure this all out. This year, more than any, polls have sapped my enthusiasm for college football.

Nice article. The polls are not something that really evaluates the teams accurately in my opinion. Each team no matter who they are playing must come out and give an effort to get the W when it all comes down to it. This is why we always see upsets come March and those so called Cinderella teams.
