It’s been a dogfight in the Big Ten this season, with five teams within two games of first place. It has also been a dogfight with regard to the top players in the conference, with only D.J. White standing out as an obvious choice for the Big Ten All-January team. With that being said, here’s January’s Fab Five.

Jim O'Brien vs Ohio State: The Battle Continues

Ohio StOhio State University (OSU) hired Jim O'Brien as its head men's basketball coach in April 1997 after having won only eight games during the 1996-1997 season.  O'Brien's hiring lead to almost immediate improvement in the program.  The Buckeyes set a school record for most wins during the 1998-1999 season, won a Big Ten title, and made it to the Final Four.  O'Brien was named the National Coach of the Year for 1998-1999.

Preview: NIT Season Tip-Off

Things change quickly in college basketball.  What was a dirty word in March – NIT – is now a positive.  For teams on the bubble last March, the prospect of playing in the NIT instead of the NCAA tournament was hard to stomach.  However, now that it is November, playing in the NIT – the Dick’s Sporting Good NIT Season Tip-Off – is a welcome experience.
