New Mexico's Darington HobsonTalk about making an impact. Darington Hobson's first season of D1 basketball was certainly a memorable one. The CollegeHoops.net High-Major Player of the Year led New Mexico to an MWC title by averaging 16.2 ppg, 9.3 rpg, and 4.5 apg. He's joined on the High-Major First Team by guards Jordan Crawford, Jimmer Fredette, and Randy Culpepper, as well as WAC Player of the Year Luke Babbitt.

Conference USA: All-Conference Teams

UTEP G Randy CulpepperIRVING, Texas - Players from five different schools are represented on the 2010 All-Conference USA men's basketball first-team, featuring three repeat all-conference selections and two newcomers. Seniors Aubrey Coleman of Houston and Ben Uzoh of Tulsa are joined by juniors Elijah Millsap of UAB and Randy Culpepper of UTEP, along with sophomore Elliot Williams of Memphis. All five players are guards. Voting on the awards was done by the C-USA head coaches and media members in each conference city.

With the bubble looking rather pedestrian at this early stage no team can afford to pass up opportunities to bolster their tournament resumes. And with the top six teams in Conference USA playing each other on Wednesday night they'll all have a chance to do just that. Two of the games (Houston/UTEP and Marshall/Tulsa) feature home teams who haven't lost at home while the third (UAB/Memphis) features a team that has yet to lose on the road.

South Carolina's Devan DowneyAfter Kentucky whipped Arkansas to ensure their move up to number one in the polls few people paid much attention to South Carolina in regards to their chances of upsetting the Wildcats. But thanks to the ability of senior guard Devan Downey to take over a game the Gamecocks stunned Kentucky 68-62 in Columbia. Head coach Darrin Horn has now won his last three meetings over Kentucky, who will most likely drop from the top spot come Monday.

College Basketball: Surprise Teams of 2009

Another year in the books, and thankfully conference play is finally here.  After all the preseason tournaments, marquee matchups, and guarantee games played in the last two months, these teams have seemingly come out of nowhere to become the early season surprises so far.
