Much has been made of Long Beach State playing five non-conference opponents who were ranked in the Top 15 of the major preseason polls. Many wondered how Dan Monson's team would navigate such a slate in spite of the fact that this experienced group went through a similar schedule last season. If Wednesday night showed anything about the 49ers it's that they're ready for the challenge, as they handed Pittsburgh its' first loss in November or December at the Petersen Events Center in the history of the arena.

Perennial contenders will once again make a run at a national title while some new faces will pop up as well. The first four-part preview will focus on the conferences, and more specifically who will win each of the 32 leagues. Rickey Broussard led Nicholls State to 2 NCAA appearancesIn the latest installment in his "Coaching Greats" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with former Nicholls State head coach Rickey Broussard. In 12 seasons at the Louisiana school Broussard won 150 games and two led Nicholls State to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1995 and 1998. Broussard now works for State Farm Insurance as a recruiter.

Jon Teitel: You played baseball at Louisiana-Lafayette. How good a baseball player were you back then, and how did you end up switching from baseball player to basketball coach?

"Big Dance" Interviews: Texas-San Antonio head coach Brooks Thompson

Texas-San Antonio head coach Brooks ThompsonAs part of his "Big Dance" interview series CHN writer Jon Teitel spent some time with Texas-San Antonio head coach Brooks Thompson, whose Roadrunners will make their first NCAA appearance since 2004 when they lost to top-seeded Stanford in the first round. UTSA takes on Alabama State on Wednesday night in the "First Four", with the winner advancing to take on East top-seed Ohio State on Friday in Cleveland.
