DAILY DRIBBLE - JANUARY 2005

W/ CHN Head Editor Shawn Siegel

Return to the Daily Dribble Archive

1/29 ..despite virginia's recent history against the tar heels, unc should walk out with a relatively easy 10 point win.. syracuse on the other hand should struggle mightily at pittsburgh tonight and fall to 20-2.. even though you haven't heard about it on espn, big result last night with princeton falling to brown at home.. perhaps this game signifies the potential for a changing of the ivy league guard.. big game in the 10 this afternoon with xavier traveling to philly to play st joes.. the surprising hawks are 5-1 in conference play but dont be surprised if they fall today.. xu's churchill odia was one of more hyped freshman in the country, but he's only averaging 10 mpg..

1/28 ..its always hard to come up with something interesting to say on friday.. rice's michael harris is one of the most underrated players in the country.. the 6-6 senior is averaging 20 points and 11 boards for the owls.. talking about underrated players, i have to mention niagara's juan mendez.. this kid is averaging 24 and 10 including 8 double-doubles in a row.. niagara is one of 4 teams duking it out for a very tight maac race.. even though it was at home, nice win for arizona coming back from a first-half defecit.. just want to give a quick thanks to all the readers of chn.. hope you're enjoying our coverage of the 04-05 season!..

1/27 ..if you saw the duke loss coming, then you know things better than i do.. check out the job old dominion is doing in the colonial athletic conference.. the monarchs are 18-2 and 8-0 in conference games..  even though providence has been struggling, freshman forward dasean white is a name to look out for in the future.. last night we learned that marquette without travis diener is just a weak squad.. washington at arizona is a much watch game tonight

1/25 ..tough loss for rutgers last night.. they're supposed to get that friendly rim at home.. perhaps one of the most surprising stories in pro sports this year is the resurgence of the bulls..  perhaps the pollsters will finally show the sooners the respect they deserve and rank them ahead of texas and osu.. ..not that anyone cares, but roger federer has a chance to be the most dominating tennis player ever.. andrew bogut has hit on 22 of 26 shots in his last two games.. no wonder utah leads the nation in fg% at 53.5.. illinois at wisconsins is a much watch game tonight.. badgers just dont lose at home..

1/24 ..don't be surprised to see rutgers give syracuse a real challenge down at the rac tonight.. with a win tonight, oklahoma deserves to be in the top 10.. check out fiu junior ivan almonte.. the 6-6 forward leads his team in all major categories.. siu continues to be the favorite in the mvc despite darren brooks' struggles.. the salukis senior leader has hit just 12 of his last 46 shots.. how about surprising denver who leads the sun belt conference with a 5-0 record.. the pioneers played stanford to within 4 points earlier in the year and have a a nice road win at conference foe la-lafayette.

1/22 ..jon chaney is showing again that his brutal early season schedule pays off once it comes to a10 games..  college basketball gameday is a good idea.. but having digger and bilas is a joke.. lets get someone up there with some personality and i'll pay attention.. obviously big win for villanova today.. but its even more important for the big east conference.. the standout teams haven't beaten anyone of note so this one looks good.. someone should remind isiah that lenny wilkens isnt the problem.. it's isiah's awful personnel moves.. the knicks have basically no future at this point..

1/21 ..has iowa's play guaranteed steve alford his job there for the forseeable future?.. nevada's nick fazekas deserves some respect on the national scene.. the sophomore big man is averaging 20 points, 9 boards and 2 blocks per game for a solid 13-4 nevada squad.. speaking of 13-4 teams, how about minnesota?.. this team was given absolutely no chance in the preseason.. it would be nice to see cincinnati upset Wake Forest tomorrow.. if only so people could calm down about the ACC.. after going 1-8 in their non-conference scheudle, the monmouth hawks are 4-0 in the nec and headed towards another ncaa tournament berth..

1/20 ..could someone remind digger phelps that until illinois loses, they deserve to be 1.. salim stoudamire is shooting an amazing 56% from three this season.. his teammate mustafa shakur has to be considered somewhat of a disappointment at this point of his career.. he's better than 9 points and 4.5 assists per game.. tough loss for texas with pj tucker being ruled ineligible.. having gone to college, i really dont understand how someone on scholarship could manage to not earn 6 credits.. when it comes down to it, its about as easy as remembering to zip your jeans in the morning..

1/19 ..so much for bama and msu being the game of the night.. more like blow out of the season.. now only if fsu could start winning some games on the road.. even though he only plays 20 minutes per game, marvin williams is one of the most efficient players in the country.. huge 7-2 freshman roy hibbert had a breakout game in georgetown's OT loss.. 12 points, 14 rebounds, and an amazing 9 offensive boards.. if roger clemens wins arbitration, his ego would be so big that his head would officially explode.. i still cant believe the dunk hakim warrick had against notre dame last week..

1/18 ..mississippi state at alabama is the game of the night.. the bulldogs havent won a game against a ranked team all season.. southwest missouri finished last season as one of the hottest teams in the mvc but has struggled to a 1-5 conference start.. still, they've lost two tight road games at top mvc team and could be ready for a late season run.. senior mike bell is quietly having a great season for a bad florida atlantic squad.. bell is averaging 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game.. will billy edelin ever be a major contributor for syracuse again?..

1/17 ..back after a weekend off.. indiana-purdue was the game of the weekend.. mike davis has already started the beginning of the end.. but if he lost that game it would have been the middle of the end.. i wish the college basketball season was longer.. give al skinner credit at boston college.. i dont want to jump on the bc bandwagon.. but he deserves respect for recruiting unheralded kids who develop into big-time college athletes.. interesting news about joe crawford returning to kentucky.. wonder if this is the end of the young pg's discontent or if this will continue into the future.. give credit to alando tucker for making his presence felt in wisconsin's big win over msu despite an injured foot..

1/14 ..duke is a hard team to place in the national rankings.. sure they're duke and they're undefeated, but do they even have half the talent as a unc or illinois does?..hard to imagine there being a less interesting schedule on tap then there is today.. why would matt leinart not go pro?.. has julius hodge lost his outside touch.. he's just 2 fo 16 on threes this season after being comfortably over 30% his 1st three seasons.. will ronny turiaf ever be 100% healthy the rest of this season?.. after scoring over 20 in 4 of his first 5 games the gonzaga big man hasnt hit the 20 mark in his last 9 games..

1/13 ..the result of the day was texas a&m over texas.. not only did a&m win, but they won with relative ease.. this team is a few points away from still being undefeated.. is billy gillispie a basketball genius..  if you fell asleep, you missed a great game between utep and nevada.. the miners looked like they were going to blow out nevada in reno, but the wolfpack came back from a 20+ deficit to send it to overtime.. utep still won.. unc can beat you from so many different ways.. there are guys on that team who get no respect but would be the best player on just about every other team.. i love the saying 'its not the player, its the game'.. nothing is truer when talking about baseball's sad steroid problem.. there's no one to blame but the league itself for letting it go on..

1/11 ..i can never tell if charlie villanueva just simply cant run or he's just that lazy.. it will be interesting to see if the ncaa's new acadmic performance program does any good.. you're looking at a max punishment of about 1 or 2 scholarships per team.. FIU's Ivan Almonte is one of the few kids in the country leading his team in points, rebounds, and assists.. he also leads in steals and is shooting 53% from the floor.. espn needs to work on improving their super tuesday lineups.. tonight is weak

1/10 ..remember when tulsa was one of the hot up and coming majors.. can favre ever get it done in the playoffs again?.. miami's guillermo diaz is one of acc's actually underrated players.. gonzaga looked less then impressive in their opening wcc games.. arizona state's playing like they deserve an ncaa tournament bid.. as an aside.. just because reggie white was good at football.. does not mean he needs to be honored as a good man.. uconn needs to put up a legit win on the board tonight against oklahoma or they should drop out of the top 25..

1/8 ..mark tyndale of temple is breaking records for futility recently.. chaney's heralded freshman is 2-28 for his last two games including 0-9 from three.. after watching princeton slow things down and make it relatively close against duke perhaps temple can shock some people today.. if only tyndale hits 50% of his shots.. unc may still yet become the best team in the country.. but they're not there now.. evansville has become a real player in the mvc with wins over creighton and northern iowa already.. check out the numbers of la salle's steven smith.. 23 and 8 with solid shooting numbers across the board..

1/7 ..all of our prayers are with lou henson.. quiet set of games tonight.. northern iowa at evansville is probably the game of the night.. evansville already has a big mvc home win over creighton.. memphis showed signs last night of being a contender in the cusa.. there's no reason the tigers cant make a big run later in the season.. if banks can keep his head on straight.. a big if.. hartford managed to score only 22 points last night.. even vin baker couldnt help them now.. jordan farmar's been as good as advertised for ucla..

1/6 ..if last night was any indication then this will be the year of the upset in college basketball.. perhaps the most surprising was michigan going into iowa and winning.. wvu's undefeated season came to a crashing halt at villanova last night.. give texas a&m a lot of credit for hanging tough at kansas.. maybe this team is more legit than i gave them credit for.. even though louisville lost, my man juan diego palacios is ready to explode for the cardinals.. lodrick stewart has really come on for usc.. he could lead the pac10 in scoring by his senior season..

1/5 ..usc is just that good.. west virginia plays at villanova tonight as a new member of the top 25.. expect them to lose and drop out quickly.. utah's andrew bogut has been on a tear lately.. 7 games of over 20 and 10 in a row.. he only scored over 20 in 3 games last season.. 11-0 texas a&m should finally lose their first game of the season at kansas.. seems to be a scoring renaissance in the nba this season.. very good sign for the popularity of the league.. army has yet to beat a d1 team this year.. final four is only 3 months away..

1/4 ..previously undefeated wichita state went down last night to 5-4 manhattan.. at home.. bad loss for the mvc.. look out for manhattan's cj anderson.. the jaspers heralded recruit is averaging 15 points and 8 boards per game.. along with fellow freshman arturo dubois the jaspers could be huge in the next couple of years.. congrats to prairie view and umkc for getting their first win of the season last night.. no auburn, youre not #1, and youre probably not even #2 regardless of the outcome of tonight's game.. longwood has a chance to improve on their 1-17 record at hartford tonight..

1/3 ..how bout bucknell.. so what if pitt is the most overrated team in the country.. beating the #7 on the road is a big deal.. not bad for a team out of the 26th ranked conference.. how could duke struggle that much against clemson at home?.. expect nelson to start over dockery soon.. wichita state is one of only 7 undefeated teams left.. meanwhile prairie view is 0-9 and takes on 1-9 alcorn state tonight in the battle of garbage teams.. prarier view's leading scorer averages 8 per game.. thats the lowest leading scorer you'll ever see..

1/2 ..virginia has a chance to prove their 8-1 start isnt a fluke against wake forest today.. utep deserves more respect nationally.. the miners are 35-9 since the beginning of last season.. it will be interesting to see how uconn's marcus williams fares in conference play.. the sophomore is amongst the national leaders in assists.. but the huskies haven't played anyone yet.. huge win for kansas yesterday.. even though it was at home the jayhawks showed a lot of toughness..
