DAILY DRIBBLE - FEBRUARY 2005

W/ CHN Head Editor Shawn Siegel

Return to the Daily Dribble Archive

2/28 ..simply awesome sunday of college basketball with kansas/oklahoma st and maryland/unc.. as an aside, i still wonder if matt doherty would still be the head coach at unc if not for sean may getting hurt back in 2002-03.. im tired of fans running onto the court after ever last win.. lets save them for the big moments.. dj white has really become a force for indiana.. next year he needs to improve on his rebounding numbers though.. with vukusic and a hopefully healthy michael thompson returning, northwestern should definitely be a postseason team next year..

2/25 ..i cant imagine the frustration involved in being a washington state fan.. because of their defense. they come close to winning so many games, but they just cant get it done.. congrats to lipscomb for getting their 16th win last night.. not bad for a team that only won 15 games total in the previous two years.. interesting game between lousiana tech and utep tonight.. tech's paul millsap is one of the country's most underrated players and has pulled in double-doubles in 10 of his last 12 games.. i've already marked cincinnati down on next month's bracket for a loss to a lower seeded team.. heralded ucla freshman arron afflalo broke through with a career high 22 points and 9 rebounds in last night's win..

2/23 ..without diener, marquette will not make the big dance.. they were real bad without diener for 3 games earlier in the season and only stand at 6-7 in the cusa as of today.. interesting game in the colonial athletic between surging hofstra (winners of 7 of 8) against league leading old dominion.. sophomore loren stokes has been a great find for the pride.. averaging 19 per game out of buffalo, ny.. seton hall fans have to be disappointed in the production of freshman point guard justin cerasoli.. after getting it going in december and january, he's becoming less and less of a factor for the struggling pirates.. still i see no reason why he shouldnt be given a chance to shine on espn tonight.. look early to see if pg mike nardi suits up for villanova after spraining his ankle earlier in the week..

2/22 ..unc at nc state may be a lot closer than people expect.. people wonder why the wolfpack aren't better, but you simply can't blame it on hodge who has no support.. purdue and indiana has become an irrelevant rivalry at this point.. congrats to new mexico for reaching the 20 win plateau by beating utah.. the lobos are much better than last year's 14 win squad, but still need to find ways to win games on the road.. good to see that charlie villanueva has awoken from a season long slumber.. with marcus williams playing better, uconn again becomes a team to watch out for in the ncaa tournament..

2/21 ..jj's 38 points was sweet.. but he overshadows an amazing game and season for arizona's salim stoudamire.. after his 9 threes yesterday, salim is shooting 56% from three on the season.. that's 56%.. again, 56%.. wow.. if not for two lucky late wins against florida state this season, we would not even be considering georgia tech for an ncaa bid.. kansas needs to get back on track tonight against the sooners.. despite being one of my favorite young players in the country, temple's mark tyndale is still shooting just 33% from the floor.. it's hard to imagine any other team besides temple who can shoot the ball so poorly, but still win some games.. the all-star game lacked a little something yesterday.. perhaps that's because it seemed like guys were playing defense.. or because there were so few pure point guards on the teams..

2/20 ..some great games yesterday.. perhaps none better than iowa state upsetting kansas.. and i know it was part of a losing cause, but mile's 3/4 court alley oop heave was simply awesome.. memphis has now won 6 of 7 games, and they have a big one coming up wednesday at charlotte.. vermont looked real tired in the 2nd half at nevada.. you can jump on the vermont bandwagon all you'd like but this team's best win all year may be a road win at holy cross.. i'll be honest, i fell asleep about 10 minutes into utep at pacific.. nothing letting gettng your chance to shine on national tv when half the country is sleeping our out drunk.. jr smith's 1st dunk was the best dunk of the dunk contest by far..

2/19 ..a little mid-saturday update.. if you havent noticed, dee brown is fast.. curtis stinson is one of my favorite players in the country.. this kid just has that little intangible quality that coaches wish every player had.. if the cyclones upset kansas, it would now be an improbable 7-game winning streak for isu after they had lost 6 in a row.. look out for josh smith in tonight's nba dunk contest.. don't believe the hype about bracket buster saturday really have much an effect on the ncaa tournament.. check out ben jacobson of northern iowa on espn2 tonight.. the kid can play, and he's likeable too.. when you hear how great jj redick is as a shooter.. remind people that sms' blake ahearn is the true free throw master.. he's shooting 95.8% this year after shooting 97.5% last year..

2/18 ..with virginia tech's win last night, every team in the acc has now beaten a top 25 team.. after starting their non-conference season with just one win against a division one team, davidson has rolled to a 14-0 record in the southern conference.. even though diener's desperation three didnt fall at the buzzer, the play that marquette ran was simply perfect.. it wont get much attention, but there's a quality nec game on tap tonight between 1st place monmouth and 2nd place farleigh dickinson.. am i crazy to be excited about the nba all-star weekend..

2/17 ..i hope lebron and vince enter the dunk contest.. add those guys in the mix and becomes a must watch event.. does anyone out there care about bracket buster saturday?.. a forgotten team this year is louisiana-lafayette who made a name for themselves in the toruney.. the ragin' cajuns have won 9 of 10 games in the sun belt conference.. their biggest win was over denver, who is led by junior yemi nicholson.. nicholson has been on fire, scoring over 20 points in 8 of 9 games.. in the ovc, there are at least 4 teams still vying for the conference title.. murray state is 2nd currently with a 9-4 ovc record, but the racers finish with their last 4 games on the road..

2/16 ..is it possible that andrew bogut could really be the #1 pick in the nba draft.. or is the australian big man simply hitting the peak of his popularity too early.. a lot of ranked teams in action tonight.. but dont expect too many upsets.. perhaps arkansas at alabama is the only change for a ranked team (ala) to lose tonight.. the best game of the night is southern illinois at illinois state.. little known junior lorenzo gordon has been having a consistently great season for the redbirds.. you can bet wichita state will be pulling hard for isu.. nc state hosts maryland tonight, and a loss could put a fork in the wolfpack's hope of making the big dance.. expect nc st to come a way with a win though..

2/14 ..happy valentines day.. wyoming heads to utah tonight in an mvc battle.. andrew bogut has averaged 27 points and 15 rebounds per game in his last 3 home games.. kansas at texas tech is the game of the night however.. the red raiders have been playing well and are now ranked.. but there only win over a ranked team all season was against the struggling sooners.. a  win tonight would really give bob knight's club some legitimacy.. i love the big east as much as anyone, but doesnt the league seem to be missing some kind of spark and excitement this year.. and guys, lets be honest.. big mac and sosa and all those guys were on roids.. dont blame the messenger.. blame the players..

2/12 ..perhaps the real game of the day is 24th ranked pacific taking on utah state on the road.. expect spencer nelson and the aggies to come away with the upset.. dont be surprised if wisconsin gives illinois a bit of a scare this afternoon.. coach k showed a lot of trust in demarcus nelson in the unc game.. it should be interesting how much playing time he gets against the terps.. princeton blew a 9 point home lead against cornell last night.. this has become a nightmare for joe scott.. st mary's loss at santa clara last night probably locks up another wcc title for gonzaga who take a game lead and have a relatively easy finish..

2/11 ..about the only thing more impressive than duke's win wednesday night, was my rec basketball team's blowout victory last night.. congratulations to lute olson on his 300th pac10 victory and another 20-win season.. give washington a lot of credit for hanging on at oregon.. will conroy was unstoppable down the stretch.. there's no reason nc state only has 3 acc wins.. this team is capable of upsetting any team in the conference on any given night..

2/09 ..lets be honest, bc losing last night is not that surprising.. the fact that digger "predicted" his beloved irish to win that game is about as impressive as a groundhog seeing his shadow or not.. i'll just be flat out honest, i'm pumped for unc at duke tonight.. i dont care if you think duke and the acc is overrated.. if you cant get up for this game you simply dont enjoy college basketball.. how nobody on the sacramento kings made the all-star team boggles my mind.. people really need to start giving tubby smith more credit.. you can say the sec is overrated, but that team just manages to get it done every week..

2/08 ..it will be interesting to see how notre dame rebounds after the tough loss to syracuse.. why dont experts just simply admit that chris thomas' extra time in college has actually hurt his nba draft stock.. this is the weakest high school crop in a few years.. scoring guards like louis williams are not worth the time of gm's.. and the big guys like andray blatche just arent that great.. expect there to be a lot of no-name europeans sneaking up the draft boards.. had florida's david lee improved in the past three seasons?.. princeton at penn tonight doesnt have its usual lustre.. the tigers are 1-3 in the ivy league..

2/07 ..after a slow start to the season, pat carroll has really found his shooting stroke for saint joseph's.. is joey graham or wayne simien the best player in the big 12?.. i dont have an answer to this one.. can syracuse really go that far in the tournament relying on mcnamara shooting the ball over a dozen times per game from three.. im already excited for unc at duke this wednesday.. lets all hope coach k is healthy.. seeing him collapse on national tv was hard to watch.. charlie villanueva is probably the most maddening player in all of college basketball..

2/06 ..enjoy the super bowl.. and dont bet on the eagles.. will providence ever win a big east game?.. how could a team led by ryan gomes be this bad?.. if miami's guillermo diaz continues at this pace, he will have to be a nationally known commodity by next season.. if temple had just one three-point sharp shooter, they'd be a top 25 team.. vincent grier's second half explosion against wisconsin was truly awesome to watch.. wonder if charlotte wishes they still had the current gopher.. 49ers did get a big win over cinci at home yesterday led by brendan plavich's 26 points.. still, plavich needs to consistently hit 40% or more from three to be considered one of the nation's best shooters..

2/04 ..as you may have noticed, chn has gone a few days this week without being updated.. i'd like to apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused, especially during this busy college basketball period.. everything has been taken care of, and we look forward to providing you with our daily content throughout the rest of the season..
