DAILY DRIBBLE - JULY 2005

W/ CHN Head Editor Shawn Siegel

Return to the Daily Dribble Archive

7/27 ..it's been awhile.. after the indiana heat won the reebok big time tournament yesterday, some are considering them the best summer team ever, or the best aau team ever.. the heat, led by dominating big man greg oden, won the prestigious big time tournament for the second year in a row.. this year ousting the oj mayo led greyhounds.. those who claim this team is the best ever may very well be right.. this is the era of aau teams becoming more than just local all-star teams, but truly state all-star teams.. is it possible that the next great aau team will simply be a truly national all-star team.. will puff daddy sponsor a team which features players from all across the country.. who basically have no home but travel around the country like basketball nomads looking for any takers.. the day doesn't seem far down the line, and whichever shoe company sponsors that team will be laughing all the way to the bank.. yesterday an article in the las vegas sun reported that brandon rush is considering usc along with illinois as his final choices.. what a coup that would be for new usc head coach tim floyd.. usc already seems to be quietly on the rise with some of the young guards they have on their roster.. and rush could give them the one year boost they need to get back on the national radar..

7/15 ..so yes this is a college basketball blogish sort of thing.. but here i am sitting here watching jack nicklaus play his last real competitive hole of golf.. and it's pretty amazing.. obviously the greatest golfer of all time.. and also one of the greatest professional athletes of all time as well.. one thing about college basketball, for better or worse, is that you don't ever grow old with players.. yes, sometimes a guy comes along who doesn't graduate till he's 25 or so.. but in college basketball, you only see players continually improving.. sometimes you see a player like chris hill or bracey wright seemingly decline or stagnate, but you don't ever really see players go down hill like you see in pro sports.. but i think this is a great part of college sports.. no matter what these guys do after they graduate or go pro.. no matter how little success they have in basketball later on.. you can always remember them for their glory days when they were a kid.. the only aging in college basketball really comes from coaches..  watching jim phelan coach for 49 years in a row.. these are the only similar comparisons to what we see with jack nicklaus today.. and as i finish writing this, jack putts in for a birdie at 18.. amazing that this man is still 99.999% better than all men at this game.. even though it's been 44 years since jack won an ncaa championship at ohio state.. imagine saying the same for a sean may or a ray felton 44 years from now..

7/13 ..the abcd camp was very solid this year.. give sonny credit for always bringing in the  big boys.. following the camp, my next project was setting up the new message board on chn.. after all the technical issues with ezboard, I decided enough was enough, and that we needed a new board that we host ourselves.. i'm very happy with the results, and the new chn message board is open today.. stop by and sign up today and get a free t-shirt after you've made 25 posts.. all the old members and posts have been deleted, so we're starting completely anew.. so far, the response about the new board has been positive.. thats all for now, i'll be getting back to my usual daily college basketball and nba draft posts tomorrow!..

7/06-09 ..i'll be covering the 2005 reebok abcd camp for chn all week, so there wont be any daily dribble updates..

7/05 ..hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend.. perhaps you enjoyed some fireworks, or a beach, or maybe a pool.. i took a couple days off from working on the site, which was much needed.. starting tomorrow, i'll be at the abcd camp all week in teaneck, nj covering the top recruits for chn.. unlike previous years when our abcd coverage was by subscription, this year all the coverage will be free.. no website, rivals and scout.com included will have better coverage.. one thing i always enjoy looking at is which college players end up getting invited to nba summer league teams.. some fringe nba draft picks were invited without surprise like anthony roberson and sharrod ford (nets) and jawad williams (warriors).. but then you have surprise guys which will be out there as well.. illinoi's backup jack ingram is heading out to play with the jazz.. as will recent syracuse graduate craig forth.. the jazz are obviously desperate for some big man talent if they're giving a look at forth.. then again, big craig had a somewhat underappreciated career at syracuse.. not that he put up big-time numbers.. about 5 points and 5 boards per game for his career.. but its very rare that a 7-footer comes in and starts for four years at a d1 program.. forth actually came in as a freshman and averaged 22 mins a game while starting, more than the 20 he averaged as a senior.. statistically, he remained very similar over his four years, though he did raise his fg% consistently while dropping his turnovers and personal fouls.. though the odds of forth playing in the nba next season are about 0.1%, he could have a surprisingly worthwhile career in europe..
