It is a very light week in college basketball, with colleges and universities taking final exams and winding down their semesters. On Thursday, there are only 18 games, with no ranked teams in action. Furthermore, just two games pit two .500-plus teams against each other, with only four BCS teams in action. Despite that, there is an interesting game on the docket, with Auburn (5-4) travelling to Tallahassee to take on Florida State (8-2). Auburn has split its two games against the ACC this season, beating Virginia but falling to North Carolina State.

In a college basketball season where mid-majors are stronger than ever, one of the “other” conferences is looking to reign supreme over the rest, and perhaps to stake a claim as the best conference in the western half of the country. With the Pac-10 suffering an uncharacteristically bad season, the Mountain West may be the best of the west. Despite not having a team in the preseason top 25 (BYU led the way with just 16 votes), the MWC now boasts two teams in the poll, New Mexico at 14 and BYU at 23.

Game of the Night: Western Kentucky at South Alabama The first full week of conference play has been loaded so far, but the schedule hits something of a lull on Thursday. With the BCS title game occurring, most eyes won’t be watching college basketball anyway. As a result, there aren’t too many marquee games on the docket. There is Penn State vs. Michigan, but neither of those teams is going anywhere; the most exciting one could be a Sun Belt showdown between Western Kentucky and South Alabama.

Preseason rankings don’t mean much. Every year, there are at least a few teams who don’t perform like they should. Other teams come out of nowhere and surprise by climbing into the top 25. For example, the team that has started the year ranked #9 has missed the NCAA Tournament four of the last ten years. It’s a crazy stat. This season, the Big Ten was full of top 25 ranked teams.
