Illinois St Improves to 21-5, Knocks Off Drake
The victory was the third-straight for the Redbirds on the road as they improved to 21-5 overall and 9-5 in the conference. Drake fell to 15-12 and 6-9, respectively.
Illinois State took its 13-point halftime lead and built into a 29-point cushion in the second half. ISU led 48-30 with 10:11 left, before the Redbirds went on an 11-0 run to take a 59-30 lead with 6:20 remaining. Illinois State used the 29-point lead to cruise to the win.
Behind the shooting prowess of Landon Shipley, the Redbirds jumped out to a 12-2 lead four minutes into action. Shipley fired in eight points in the first four minutes and finished with that total for the half. ISU continued to build the lead and led, 24-8, with 9:55 remaining in the half.
The Redbirds were held without a field goal for over seven minutes and Drake put together an 8-1 run and trailed 25-16 with 4:29 left in the half. The Bulldogs were limited to zero points for the remainder of the period and Illinois State added two more baskets to lead, 29-16, at the intermission.
Emmanuel Holloway added 11 points and six assists for the Redbirds, as the only other Redbird in double-digit scoring. Jonathan Cox led Drake with 11 points and Josh Young finished with 10.
Illinois State will be back in action Wednesday when the Redbirds host Wichita State for a 7:07 p.m. tip on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.
