Columbia, Mo. - Head Coach Mike Anderson rounded out the early signing period in a big way on Tuesday, when he announced that "Five Star" wing Tony Mitchell (Dallas, Texas / L.G. Pinkston) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at the University of Missouri next season.
Mitchell is the fourth member of Mizzou's recruiting class, joining Kadeem Green (Charlotte, N.C./United Faith), Rick Kreklow (Columbia, Mo. / Rock Bridge) and Phil Pressey (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal).
An incredible athlete in a 6-foot-8, 220-pound frame, Mitchell was built for up-tempo basketball. The McDonald's All-America candidate played his junior season at the Center of Life Academy in Miami, Fla., where he averaged 17.2 points and 8.1 rebounds. The Texas native moved back to his home state this summer and will conclude his high school career at Dallas' L.G. Pinkston High School for head coach Nick Smith.
Mitchell is currently rated the #15 overall player in America by Rivals.com and is Missouri's highest-rated recruit of the past 15 years, surpassing former NBA first round draft pick Linas Kleiza, who was rated #17 in America in 2003.
"Tony is excited to be a Missouri Tiger and we are elated that he is joining our family," Head Coach Mike Anderson said. "Tony is one of the best forwards in the country and he certainly fits the Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball. He is very versatile, skilled, has toughness and great instincts for the game. He's an elite athlete who loves to win. And as talented as Tony is, he's an even better person. He comes from a great family."
Mitchell is the second player from the state of Texas to sign with Missouri in the past week. He is rated the #2 overall player in Lone Star State, just ahead of another MU signee, Phil Pressey, who is listed at #3. Mitchell is also the nation's #3 overall small forward by Rivals.com.
