The
Important Questions
CHN experts answer the
important questions that are on your mind this week. We know
you're not thinking about your wife, or your job, or even your kids this
week. No, this week is devoted to college basketball, and only
college basketball.
Question #2:
What Teams
Are In Over Their Heads?
You know the selection
committee makes mistakes every year. What team out of the 65 just
does not belong? Like average guys with overly attractive girlfriends.
How did that happen?
Brad Best -
San Diego State
UCLA.
The Pac 10 isn't that strong other than Washington and Arizona and UCLA
didn't prove to be a consistent winner down the stretch.
Dan Curry -
DCI National Ranking
Northern Iowa...the Missouri Valley was deserving of a 2nd bid, but not
a 3rd. It's arguable whether the Valley is better than the WAC (2
bids), the MWC (2 bids), the WCC (2 bids), the Big West (2 bids) and the
MAC (only one bid).
Sydney Hunte -
MAAC
UAB. How are
they in with a strength of schedule in the high 120’s? However, the
relatively easy schedule, coupled with victories over Oral Roberts and
Marquette (teams with high 70’s-low 80’s in the RPI), helped the
Blazers. Also, Winthrop—the only reason they’re in is because they won
the title in a mediocre Big South conference. Despite their 27-5 record
they played one of the easiest schedules in the nation (SOS was nearly
300).
Bill "Cigarboy" Kintner
- College Basketball Interviews
Oakland. They are not as good as they have been in the past. A
losing record in a so-so conference. I know I probably should have
named an at-large team but it was more fun and easier to pile-on the
Grizzlies....rrrrrr!
Mark Marra -
CCSU Blue Devils
Northern Iowa shouldn't have made it.
Ed Matisik -
NCAA Legal Issues
Oakland
University should not be in the tournament: THEY HAVE A LOSING RECORD!
The NCAA Tournament Committee should adopt a rule--such as they have for
football--by which a team with a losing cannot participate in
post-season play. Oakland won the conference tournament, you say? So
what. They got lucky. The Tounament Committee should be permitted to
by-pass any conference tournament winner with a losing record and offer
the conference bid to the regular season champion.
Adam Stanco -
National
Commentary
UAB.
They have no
legitimate road wins and lost four in a row in early February.
Jon Teitel -
Ivy League
Northern Iowa. The Panthers lost 10 games this season, including 5 to
non-NCAA Tournament teams (3 of whom finished with losing records:
Bradley, Drake, and Evansville), and went 1-and-out in the Missouri
Valley Conference tournament. 11-seeds often pull a first-round upset
of a 6-seed, but I expect Wisconsin to hold them under 60 points and get
an easy win.
Dan Vance -
Indiana Schools
Obviously Oakland. They are by far the worst team in the tournament and
got in on the luck of an automatic bid. The worst part about Oakland
getting in, a deserving Oral Roberts team got snuffed.
Joel Welser -
Monday Mailbag
Northern Iowa. But they are just as deserving as anybody that got
left out.
