The Important Questions

CHN experts answer the important questions that are on your mind this week.  We know you're not thinking about your wife, or your job, or even your kids this week.  No, this week is devoted to college basketball, and only college basketball.

Question #5: What Will the Big 1st Round Upsets Be?

This is the ever-important question.  They key to winning your pool.  Picking that winner that nobody's even heard of.  Your co-workers will be amazed.  They will ask you, "how'd you know that?"  Your answer will be Collegehoopsnet.com told me the secrets.

Brad Best - San Diego State

12 Wisconsin-Milwaukee will upset #5 Alabama

Richard "The Professor" Cheeks - Kentucky Wildcats

Iowa over Cincinnati.  This is an interesting question.  I have observed that there have been 7 to 10 “upsets” in the first round over the years, an average of about 1 game in 4.  8 v 9 matchups can provide a couple, and I think there has always been a 5 v 12 upset.  The reason I picked this game to highlight is that I think Iowa has played a tougher schedule than Cincinnati, and I have never been impressed by Huggins’ post season performance.  On a more personal level, I really prefer to see an Iowa v. Kentucky second round game than a Kentucky v. Cincinnati game.

Dan Curry - DCI National Ranking

Utah State has a chance to knock off Arizona.  The Aggies have good big men, good 3-point shooters and stifling defense.

Sydney Hunte - MAAC

Niagara over Oklahoma.  The Purple Eagles have a pretty strong player in Juan Mendez.  If he can stay on his game then Niagara will be able to win this game.

Bill "Cigarboy" Kintner - College Basketball Interviews

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee-  they are a very good team that I think nobody wants to play.  Plus there has been a history of 12 seed upsets that make betting on any 12 seed an interesting endeavor.

Mark Marra - CCSU Blue Devils

UTEP over Utah.  I am not sold on Utah holding it together.  I think the Mountain West was average at best this year.  I also don't like that all of their loses came away from home either.

Key fact: UTEP shoots 79%+ from the free throw liine.

Ed Matisik - NCAA Legal Issues

UW-Milwaukee will crush Alabama.  And GW will squeak by Georgia Tech.  And Bucknell will play Kansas very tight.

David Mihm - Bracketography.com

I like Vermont to beat Syracuse in Worcester.

Adam Stanco - National Commentary

Even though Villanova is a popular tournament favorite, they have not won a big road game all year long. New Mexico’s Danny Granger is going to pose some serious match-up problems for Villanova and the Wildcats have very little tournament experience.

Bucknell probably won’t beat Kansas, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone if they did. The Jayhawks are having offensive difficulties without Keith Langford and Bucknell beat St. Joe’s and Pittsburgh earlier this season.

Jon Teitel - Ivy League

As much as I’d like to pick Penn over Boston College, I think UTEP might give Utah some major problems.  The Miners won 27 games this year, including 10 of their final 12 games and a WAC championship, and all 3 of their non-conference losses were against NCAA Tournament teams (Southern Illinois, Texas Tech, and Pacific).  They do not have one specific big man who will match up well with Utah stud Andrew Bogut, but UTEP did not allow a single opponent to score over 80 points this year, and they shoot a high percentage from all over the court.

Dan Vance - Indiana Schools

Out in Nashville, Louisville is riding on a wave of success. Despite the fact that they too deserved more than a 4-seed (see Syracuse), LA-Lafayette is a formidable foe. Watch for the Rajin Cajuns to do some damage to Pitino and his boys

Joel Welser - Monday Mailbag

I hate to say it but Michigan State better be careful with Alex Loughton and Isaiah Hunter at ODU.
