The “Curse” bit Stanford, Valparaiso, Arizona and even me last week. That’s right; I was the victim of my own making. I went on a national radio show to talk a bit on the upcoming NCAA Tournament and when asked about which team I thought was “this year’s George Mason”, I talked about South Alabama. The Jaguars lost that very night on their home floor to put their NCAA status in serious doubt. Sorry, Jags…next time I’ll keep my mouth shut.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – High Point University senior Arizona Reid (Gaffney, S.C.) has been voted the Big South Conference 2007-08 Preseason Men’s Basketball Player of the Year by the League’s Head Coaches, Sports Information Directors and media panel, it was announced today at the Conference’s annual Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Concord, N.C. This year’s preseason All-Conference team features four players who were named to the League’s All-Freshman team in 2004-05.

Winthrop guard Adams passes away due to car accident injuries

Four days after suffering severe injuries in a car accident, Winthrop guard DeAndre Adams passed away Wednesday. Last season, Adams played in all thirty-five games for the Big South champions, averaging 2.1 points, 2.8 assists and 1.1 rebounds per game.

Condolences to the Adams and Winthrop families.

Winthrop Names Assistant Peele Head Coach

Winthrop wasted no time in finding a new coach to replace the departed Gregg Marshall, promoting assistant coach Randy Peele to the top spot. Peele has been an assistant with the Eagles for the past season. "Randy Peele has been an integral part in that success and we believe the future of Winthrop basketball will continue to flourish under his leadership," Winthrop athletic director Tom Hickman said. In a news release, Peele added, "We will do everything possible to maintain the benchmark that has been set." Prior to being an assistant at Winthrop, Peele was a head coach at UNC-Greensboro, and an assistant at Virginia Tech, Campbell, Tennessee-Martin, and St. Michael’s College.
