NYC Metro Ranking & Report: Year End Review

April 14th, 2008

Well, another season is in the books, and it was a quiet postseason for metropolitan area schools as only Rider played in a postseason tournament. Alas, their season ended in the CBI with a loss at Old Dominion, but that shouldn’t take away from a season that saw them finish one game away from an NCAA Tournament bid. The injury bug, something that the Broncs didn’t have to deal with all season, came up and bit them during the MAAC Tournament, but they got to the final nonetheless.

A Saint's Welcome: Siena Advances to NCAA Tournament

March 11th, 2008

Albany, NY - Given the tight nature of the MAAC title race throughout the regular season, one that saw six teams finish within two games of first place, it would have been natural to expect a close final between co-champs Rider and Siena. However, the Saints' lone senior and birthday boy Tay Fisher made sure there would be no such drama. Taking all ten shots from behind the arc and making six, Fisher scored twenty-one points and helped lead Siena (22-10) to a 74-53 win in tonight's MAAC Tournament title game.

MAAC Semifinals Recap: Rider to Face Siena

March 9th, 2008

ALBANY, N.Y.- To say that things didn't look good from a depth standpoint heading into tonight's MAAC Tournament semifinal for Rider would be an understatement. Both Ryan Thompson and Justin Robinson missed the game due to injury, but Jason Thompson showed the Times Union Center crowd why he's Player of the Year and Matt Griffin and Kamron Warner stepped up to get the Broncs a 76-71 victory over Marist.

MAAC Quaterfinals Recap: Rider Survives, Niagara Dethroned

March 9th, 2008

ALBANY, N.Y.- On paper, the matchup between conference co-champion Rider and last-place Canisius looked like an absolute snoozer. The Broncs, in sweeping the Golden Griffins, won the two games in blowout fashion. The second of which was a 102-51 whipping that underscored just how bad Canisius has been all year. But a not so funny thing happened: Canisius didn't fold.

An explanation for one biased fan (and anyone else out there with the same viewpoint)

February 5th, 2008

Well, needless to say this week's NYC Metro Ranking and Report has opened some eyes. More specifically one set, a gentleman who does not think that Seton Hall should have dropped from first to second in the poll. No need to worry about the fact that they went 1-1 while Rider, this week's number one, won two games against chief competitors for the MAAC crown. On the road no less, but to this individual this doesn't matter because they don't play in a "showcase conference".

NYC Metro Ranking & Report: Jason Thompson Leads Rider

I’d be a fool not to mention the New York Giants’ 17-14 victory in Super Bowl XLII. Congratulations to the organization and all you Giants who helped this team achieve their 3-5 home record. Just kidding, enjoy the moment and the fact that just when everyone said this team couldn’t win, they went ahead and did it. Now, let’s move on to the week that was in the metropolitan area on the hardwood.

NYC Metro Ranking & Report: New Teams Added

January 30th, 2008
After last week’s article I received an email from a Rutgers fan who wanted to know why his Scarlet Knights weren’t in the poll. Fair enough, but we’ll just ignore the fact that my inbox was empty with these requests when RU was 0-6 in Big East play. A home win over then-#18 Villanova will do that to people, and rightfully so. But to be fair, Rutgers is not the only team added. Say hello to Monmouth, Princeton and Rider, which rounds this list out at twenty-three teams. I hope that’s all, but if there’s someone else, email me at
