Duke or Carolina? BC or UMASS? Gonzaga or
Washington.. or Washington State? What is the best program in each state? While
there's not much competition in Hawaii.. there are great debates to be had in
loaded regions like California, North Carolina, and Texas. The State of
'08 is a ranking of every program in every state.. based mostly on
recent success (the last five years) mixed in with subjective factors such
as conference prestige, historical success, and overall program direction.

- The Panthers have made 7-straight NCAA Tournaments, thanks to the foundation
built by Ben Howland. In that 7-year stretch are 4 Sweet Sixteens, including 2
each by Howland and Jamie Dixon. This year's team projects to be Top 20 once
again.

VILLANOVA
- Jay Wright's squad is looking to make its 5th Tournament in a row. Even
though the team did sneak into the field last year, the previous three teams
were legit Top 25 squads, including the 2006 team that earned a #1 seed.

SAINT
JOSEPH'S
- In the past eight years, St. Joe's has reached the postseason seven times
(4 NCAAs and 3 NITs), a stretch in which
Phil Martelli has been named the A10's top coach three times. This year the team
should be solid once again, but Philly rivals Villanova and Temple are expected
to be better.

TEMPLE
- The Owls returned to the Big Dance for the first time since 2001, as the
program is still trying to gain an identity following John Chaney's epic career.
With the exception of 2007, Temple has been in the Top 102 RPI every year since
the 80's.

PENN
- The Quakers have obviously been one of the best teams (along with
Princeton) in the Ivy League since the early 70's. While Princeton has
collapsed, Penn is still hanging in there following the departure of Fran Dunphy.
Last year's young team did struggle following 3-straight Tourney trips, but a
19-20 win season should be expected in 2009.

6.
BUCKNELL - Long-time coach Pat Flannery stepped down after last season's
disappointing 12-19 finish. But Flannery took the program to heights that no one
could have expected. In '05 & '06, the Bison not only made the Big Dance,
but knocked off Kansas & Arkansas. '07 wasn't bad either with a Top 80 RPI
finish.

7. DREXEL
- Drexel is coming off one if its worst seasons in years, and the worst in
Bruiser Flint's 12-year career. Before last year's 12-20 debacle, the Dragons
had made 4 NIT's in the previous 5 years.

8. PENN STATE - Last year's 7-11 Big Ten record was the best in Ed DeChellis'
5-year tenure. I guess that's progress of some sort, but the Penn State has
accomplished virtually nothing since 2001's freak Sweet Sixteen run.

9.
LEHIGH - When Billy Taylor took over in 2002, Lehigh had been in a prolonged
slump. But he did a nice job getting the Mountain Hawks to the Tourney in '04
and to the Pat League title game in '06. 2nd year coach Brett Reed is trying to
continue that success after an up and down first year.

10.
ROBERT MORRIS - Last year was the culmination of steady growth achieved
during Mark Schmidt's tenure. But it was 1st year coach Mike Rice who got to
reap Schmidt's rewards, leading the team to an all-time high 27 wins and making
the NIT after winning the NEC regular-season title.

11.
DUQUESNE
- Not one of Duquesne's last six coaches finished with a +.500 record.
Last year's 17-13 record was the Dukes best since 93-94 when they reached the
NIT. 17-13 is quite an accomplishment for Ron Everhart considering he took over
a team that was 3-24 in '06.

12.
LA SALLE
- La Salle's utter lack of success is surprising because the school does
have decent name recognition. The program has showed potential since John
Giannini took over in 2004, but the postseason will still have to wait. La Salle
has finished over .500 just once in the last 15 seasons (2006).

13.
LAFAYETTE - In '99 & '00, the Leopards won back to back Patriot League
titles. There hasn't been much to cheer about in the last 8 seasons though. 2004
was the last time Lafayette even finished above .500 in league play.

14.
SAINT FRANCIS - The past three seasons have been simply brutal. The Red
Flash have won 15 total games against D1 teams and finished below 300th in the
RPI each year. Most preseason publications project another last-place NEC finish
in 08-09.

Bristol, CT --
The seventh annual
ESPNU BracketBusters event, a two-day men’s college basketball extravaganza
pitting potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other on February 20-21,
will feature 13 nationally televised games – on either ESPN2, ESPNU or
ESPN360.com -- selected from a pool of 102 teams.

For the fourth straight year, ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, will
televise five BracketBusters games while ESPN360.com, ESPN’s customized
broadband service, will offer two. ESPN2 will televise six contests. ESPN360.com
will also simulcast ESPN2’s six telecasts. The 13 BracketBusters matchups will
be announced February 2, while game time and network assignments will be
announced February 9.

The 102-team field is highlighted by the return of last season’s BracketBusters
participant Davidson, who made it to the Elite Eight in last year’s NCAA
Tournament and will feature 12 teams from the Mid-American and Colonial
Athletic; 10 from the Ohio Valley, Missouri Valley, Horizon League and Metro
Atlantic Athletic; nine from the Western Athletic and Big West; four from the
America East and Southern; three from the Big South; two from the Big Sky,
Summit League and West Coast; and one from the Mid-Eastern Athletic, Northeast
and Patriot.

As part of the agreement, all 13 of the BracketBusters home teams, as well as
the remaining 38 home squads, will play a “return” game at the home facility of
their opponent in November or December of the following season.

This year’s BracketBusters pool features teams with 77 appearances in the last
five NCAA Tournaments, including a team in the Final Four - George Mason (2006);
one in the Elite Eight – Davidson (2008); and six Sweet Sixteen squads – Butler
(2007), Southern Illinois (2007), Bradley (2006), Wichita State (2006),
UW-Milwaukee (2005) and Nevada (2004).

Bucknell Names Dave Paulsen New Head Coach

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Dave Paulsen, a two-time National Coach of the Year who led Williams College to the 2003 Division III national championship, has been selected as the head men’s basketball coach at Bucknell, director of athletics and recreation John Hardt announced Tuesday. Paulsen, a 1987 Williams graduate and a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, has coached at every level of college basketball over the last 20 years, has won 68 percent of his games as a head coach, and is considered a highly sought-after consultant on the principles of the motion offense.

Paulsen, 43, comes to Bucknell as its 20th head basketball coach after leading Williams to the top of the Division III ranks. In eight years at Williams, he guided the Ephs to a 170-53 (.762) record, including a combined 61-3 mark in 2002-03 and 2003-04. His team captured the 2003 national championship and was the national runner-up in 2004. The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Coach of the Year in both 2003 and 2004, Paulsen’s teams won three NESCAC championships (2003, 2004, 2007) and made four NCAA Tournament appearances (2002, 2003, 2004, 2007). He was a three-time NESCAC Coach of the Year and two-time New England Coach of the Year.

“Bucknell men’s basketball has established a superb record of winning on the court with outstanding young men who are dedicated scholar-athletes,” said Bucknell president Brian C. Mitchell. “Coach Paulsen is precisely the first-class leader we sought for this exceptional program. He knows what it is like to recruit the best student-athletes, to prepare them for success on the national level, and to bring honor and credit to the university in doing so. We are proud to welcome Coach Paulsen into the Bison coaching staff, and look forward to the tremendous successes ahead of him.”

“At the end of a comprehensive national search, it is clear that Dave Paulsen is the coach who can build upon Bucknell’s winning tradition in the men’s basketball program,” said Hardt. “Coach Paulsen has recruited successfully at the Division I level, and he has built a championship program at an academically minded liberal arts institution. Perhaps more impressive than his won-loss ledger is his track record in developing quality student-athletes who represent their school and their community with pride. During the search process, it did not take long to understand just how well-respected Coach Paulsen is across the coaching profession, both as a colleague and as a basketball strategist. I am very excited to welcome Dave and his family to Bucknell. We are eager to facilitate his successful transition and to him beginning his work with the Bison program.”

Prior to his tenure at Williams, Paulsen served as head coach at LeMoyne from 1997-2000 and at St. Lawrence from 1994-97. He compiled a three-year record of 42-39 at LeMoyne, while also serving as the school’s director of NCAA compliance. At St. Lawrence, he posted a 50-28 record in three seasons, including the 1995-96 and 1996-97 campaigns in which the Saints made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, and he was twice named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year.

In 14 years as a head coach at Williams, LeMoyne and St. Lawrence, Paulsen produced a record of 262-120 (.680).

In 1989-90, Paulsen served as the graduate assistant coach on Steve Fisher’s staff at Michigan while completing his master’s degree in history. Paulsen was part of a Wolverines program that went 23-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and he had the opportunity to coach six players who would later become NBA draft picks.

From 1990-94, Paulsen was the senior assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Cleveland State, helping the Vikings to a 64-50 record in four seasons, including a 22-6 record (15-1 Mid-Continent Conference) in 1992-93.

Paulsen graduated from Williams cum laude with departmental honors in history. He was also a member of the Ephs’ varsity basketball team. In 1987, his squad captured the ECAC New England Division III championship.

Upon his return to Williams as head coach, Paulsen also served as an assistant professor of physical education, which is fitting since he is widely regarded as one of college basketball’s most accomplished teachers.

Known as an offensive innovator, Paulsen has produced four acclaimed instructional videos, entitled “Ten Offensive Principles for the Adaptable Motion Offense,” “Motion Offense for Beginners,” “Developing Explosive Perimeter Players,” and “Principles of Effective Post Play.”

Paulsen has been a featured clinician at more than 50 developmental camps and coaches conventions throughout the nation, including the prestigious Nike Championship Basketball Clinics. He was even asked to participate in a pair of clinics in Portugal.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to carry on the tradition of success that has been built at Bucknell through the years,” said Paulsen. “Bucknell has distinguished itself among a very small group of schools that have been able to win games in the NCAA Tournament and yet hold true to the ideal of the scholar-athlete.
Turnarounds: 31 Teams to Watch For: Part Three

With the off-season now upon us and
the spring signing period well under way, this is a good opportunity to attempt
to forecast some of the teams who could make the jump next season. Is there a
team out there like this past season’s Drake Bulldogs, who went from ninth place
to a dominating run through the Missouri Valley? Or how about Arizona State, a
team that went from dead last in the Pac-10 to fifth place and could have the
makings of a conference title run this season? With one pick for each
conference, here are 31 teams you should keep an eye on next season.

Part Three

MEAC:
Hampton

2007-08 Record:
18-12 (11-5)

Yes, the Pirates
finished tied for second in the MEAC last season, but they saw their season come
to an abrupt end with a harsh 75-74 loss to eventual conference champ Coppin
State in the MEAC Tournament. They do have to replace leading scorer Rashad
West, but of the five leading scorers on last year’s team three will be back.
Look for Vincent Simpson, Matthew Pilgrim and Michael Freeman to take on even
more scoring responsibility next year in attempts to win the MEAC. I think
they’ve got a shot at getting to the NCAA Tournament next season, but they will
have a fight on their hands from the likes of Morgan State and Delaware State.

Missouri Valley:
Creighton

2007-08 Record:
22-11 (10-8)

Head coach Dana
Altman was in Fayetteville for about two days before he decided that he had to
remain at Creighton. His decision worked out for all parties involved as the
Blue Jays notched another 20-win season and won a Postseason NIT game in the
process. But more can be done, most notably contend for the MVC championship.
With the exciting P’Allen Stinnett and many other key contributors due back next
season, Creighton can definitely contend for the crown in 2008-09.

Mountain West:
Utah

2007-08 Record:
18-15 (7-9)

Make no mistake
about it; UNLV and BYU (if Lee Cummard and Trent Plaisted both return) are the
favorites to win the Mountain West. But the slots in the standings behind those
two are practically wide open, and the Utes could be the team that moves to the
top of that list. The lone contributor to leave was guard Johnnie Bryant, who
moved to the bench to make way for JUCO transfer Tyler Kepkay when the season
began. Along with Kepkay due back is seven-footer Luke Nevill, who can score
with either hand on the low block. With the number of players they have due
back, look for Jim Boylen’s bunch to make a move up the standings to an area
close to where we’ve been accustomed to seeing their program.

Northeast
Conference:
Monmouth

2007-08 Record:
7-24 (4-14)

It would be easy to
choose Central Connecticut State here and proclaim them a favorite to win the
NEC. But why not go way out on a limb and expect a team that only scored 59.2
points per game to compete in the top half of the conference? Last year’s team
featured seven freshmen, four sophomores and two juniors. Jhamar Youngblood led
the team in scoring with twelve points per game, but the year of experience
should help this entire team when it comes to winning basketball games. Not sure
how good they can be, but don’t expect the Hawks to be anyone’s whipping boy
when conference play rolls around.

Ohio Valley:
Southeast
Missouri St.

2007-08 Record:
12-19 (7-13)

The Redhawks will
welcome back three of their top five scorers next season, most notably forward
Jaycen Herring and guard Kenard Moore. And their top departing scorer, Brandon
Foust, only played in eighteen games last season so the core of this team should
be used to playing without him. Six of their losses last season, five of which
were in OVC play, were by four points or less and a little change in luck could
put them in position to challenge at the top of the league. A change in those
five results gives them a 12-8 record in the OVC last year, which would have
been good enough for third place in the conference. They’re not too far off;
it’s just a matter of finishing the job in crunch time.

Pac-10:

Arizona State

2007-08 Record:
21-13 (9-9)

After the
abomination that was the Sun Devils’ 2006-07 season, not too many went into last
season thinking that come Selection Sunday they’d be debating the NCAA
worthiness of Arizona State. But we were, and with stars James Harden and Jeff
Pendergraph both returning to Tempe, Herb Sendek may have a team talented enough
to make a run at a Pac-10 title. Granted, UCLA will head into the season as the
overwhelming favorite and they should. But this has the makings of a big year
for Sun Devil basketball, and they should have no problem whatsoever reaching
the NCAA Tournament.

Patriot:

Bucknell

2007-08 Record:
12-19 (6-8)

Talk about a
shocker. Both the Bison and rival Holy Cross were the trendy picks to win the
Patriot League; instead they both end up at the bottom of the standings. But the
Bison went into the off-season on a positive, knocking off Navy in a Patriot
League quarterfinal before losing at Colgate. John Griffin, who hit the
miraculous game-winner at Navy, Darren Mastropaolo and Rob Thomas are the only
departing seniors. The key to how much of an improvement the Bison make next
season will be how they go about replacing head coach Pat Flannery, who retired
after fourteen seasons on the job.

Northeast non-TV Bracket Busters preview

Here’s a quick preview of the ESPNU O’Reilly Bracket Busters games this weekend that will not be shown on television involving northeast teams. In most cases, the organizers of this event have done a better job of limiting the travel for non-television games, with the exception of UC Davis visiting Loyola (MD) among games involving northeast leagues. Bracket Busters, originally put together to provide schools in non-BCS leagues one last opportunity to add to their resume, now involves some 100 schools from sixteen conferences.

Niagara @ Appalachian State (Saturday, 1 PM)

The nation’s leading scorer, Charron Fisher, takes his act on the road as the Purple Eagles visit the Mountaineers of the Southern Conference. Fisher has eclipsed the forty point mark in two of his last three games, including 45 and nine rebounds against Loyola (MD). Niagara (with help from Tyrone Lewis, Stanley Hodge and an improving Benson Egemonye) will look to run and put up a lot of points, but the Mountaineers are also capable of scoring some points. Six players score at least seven points per game, led by senior forward Donte Minter. I’ll take the Mountaineers due to the home court advantage.

Northeastern @ Holy Cross (Saturday, 4 PM)

The Huskies make the short trip to Worcester to take on a Crusader team still trying to recover from a slow start in Patriot League play. Tim Clifford is Holy Cross’ best offensive option, but it’s been the health of PG Pat Doherty that has been the concern. His Achilles injury at San Francisco was the catalyst for a five-game skid early in 2008, and the team has been up and down ever since. Northeastern, looking to end their two-game skid, will counter with a balanced scoring attack led by wing Matt Janning. Normally, I’d go with the home-court advantage, especially with an environment as hostile as the one awaiting NU’s arrival. But I’m going to take the Huskies due to the fact that they’re a more balanced team on offense.

Bucknell @ Old Dominion (Saturday, 7 PM)

The Bison, like their Patriot League rivals, have uncharacteristically struggled in league play this year. But given the number of losses due to graduation over the last two seasons, you can understand why this team isn’t in its usual perch atop the conference standings. Guards John Griffin, Justin Castleberry and Stephen Tyree are the main men on the offensive end of the floor, and they’re going to have their hands full in Norfolk. Forward Gerald Lee leads the Monarchs in scoring, but they have seven players averaging at least six points per game. In their last four games, all wins, three different Monarchs have led the team in scoring (Lee twice, Brian Henderson and Abdi Lidonde once apiece). I like the Monarchs to win this one.

Vermont @ UNC-Wilmington (Saturday, 7 PM)

If you’re looking to find a candidate for the most improved player in the country (yes, country), look no further than Vermont’s Marqus Blakely. After averaging 5.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season, the sophomore forward is up to 19.8 and 10.8 this year. And only two players have a 30/20 game to their credit this season: Michael Beasley and…Marqus Blakely. Mike Trimboli and Kyle Cieplicki are also more than capable of scoring from the perimeter. As for the Seahawks, four players average at least twelve points per game, led by senior guard T.J. Carter’s 15.8. Possessing a home record of 11-2, UNCW comes into this one riding a four-game win streak. Expect this one to be a close one, but I like the Seahawks to come out on top.

UC Davis @ Loyola-Maryland (Saturday, 1 PM)

Well, this one could get ugly as the Greyhounds host the Aggies. UC Davis, currently dead last in the Big West, has lost their last nine and are the league’s worst defensive team (opponents shoot 48.1% from the field). And when you’ve got to stop a player like G Gerald Brown, that could be bad news for the Aggies. Brown will have some help on the offensive end, supplied by Michael Tuck and Marquis Sullivan. The Aggies are led by guards Vince Oliver and Shane Hanson, but they have a road record of 1-11 for the season. I like Loyola to win this one.

Hofstra @ Iona (Saturday, 2 PM)

The Gaels host one of the nation’s best scorers in Hofstra’s Antoine Agudio, and with Iona preferring to quicken the pace this could be a game in which Agudio puts up some points. But the trend all season has been that the Pride are only as successful as Agudio’s supporting cast, and a group led by Charles Jenkins has become more confident as the season has progressed. On the other side, Kevin Willard’s first year as head coach has been streaky in regards to results, with a three game win streak followed by a short losing spell. Iona ended a two-game skid with a win at Canisius on Monday night, and five players averaging about eight points per game (Kyle Camper averages 7.8 to be exact). The key to this one will be how well Hofstra takes care of the basketball, something they haven’t done well on the road this season (3-9 away from home). I’ll take Iona by a basket.

Fairfield @ Drexel (Saturday, 4 PM)

The Stags, winners of five in a row, take their on one of the CAA’s worst offensive teams in the Dragons of Drexel. Center Frank Elegar leads Drexel in both scoring and rebounding, but the points have been few and far between for a team looking to replace the likes of Bashir Mason and Dominic Mejia from last season’s team. Fairfield, on the other hand, has received a boost from the likes of seniors Marty O’Sullivan and Mamadou Diakhate, two players who weren’t expected to see much playing time throughout the remainder of the season. But the team runs based on the play of PG Jonathan Han, the MAAC’s assist leader. With six road wins already to their credit, I like the Stags to pick up a seventh.

Youngstown State @ Buffalo (Saturday, 4 PM)

With two of the bottom feeders in their respective leagues on display, you have to dig a little deeper to figure out who to watch in this one. How about guards Andy Robinson (Buffalo) and Byron Davis (Youngstown State)? Both lead their teams in scoring, but truth be told each team has a couple of places from which the points can come. I’m taking Buffalo for one simple reason: The Penguins are 1-11 on the road this season.

Binghamton @ Manhattan (Saturday, 4 PM)

One of three matchups between America East and MAAC schools, this one will be an interesting affair due to the age difference between the backcourts. Manhattan, led by Antoine Pearson and Devon Austin (Austin’s a wing), rely primarily on sophomores while Binghamton’s backcourt is manned by seniors Mike Gordon and Richard Forbes. The Bearcats’ leading scorer, however, is sophomore forward Lazar Trifunovic (14.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg). I like the Jaspers to move their three-game win streak to four due to the fact that they’re at home (Binghamton is 3-10 on the road this season).

Albany @ Canisius (Saturday, 7:30 PM)

There’s no Jamar Wilson, but the Great Danes are still in third place in America East. The leader this season is Brian Lillis, a wing currently averaging sixteen points per game. In all, five Great Danes are averaging at least 7.7 points per game. Their opponent has one of the quickest guards in the MAAC in Frank Turner, but little has gone right this year for the 4-22 Golden Griffins. Losers of five straight games, I don’t think Canisius plays good enough defense (allowing 73.1 points per game) to end the skid in this one.

Boston University @ St. Peter’s (Saturday, 2 PM)

The Terriers have won six of their last seven, while the Peacocks have lost eleven of thirteen. SPC has one of the toughest competitors in the MAAC in senior Todd Sowell, but as a team they simply don’t defend well enough or take good enough care of the basketball (averaging sixteen turnovers per game). When you have four players scoring in double figures, turnovers are a sure way to keep your win total low. Corey Lowe, one of the best guards in America East, leads BU with eighteen points per game, but the improved play of freshman John Holland has been the catalyst for their recent run of good play. I like the Terriers to get a road win in this one.

Bucknell Announces Three Signings

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Head coach Pat Flannery has announced that three student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play basketball at Bucknell beginning in 2008-09. Enoch Andoh, a 6’8” forward from San Jose, Calif. (Archbishop Mitty); Bryan Cohen, a 6’5” guard from Huntingdon Valley, Pa. (Abington Friends); and Probese Leo, a 6’9” native of the Bahamas who now plays at St. Pius X High School in Houston will all become Bison next season.

“These three student-athletes fit the model of Bucknell University,” said Flannery. “Our staff identified and recruited three quality young men who are all very good students. Each of them comes from outstanding basketball programs that play against top competition. That should prepare them well for the type of schedule that we play. None of them will be in awe when the lights go on for the first time. Our main priorities are to make sure they can handle our schedule and our course load, and we feel like all three can do that.”

Andoh projects as a low-post player, where at 6’8”, 235 pounds the coaching staff feels he has the size to compete at the college level. Andoh comes from one of the best prep programs in the state of California. Archbishop Mitty was the Division 2 state runner-up last year, and with four Division I early signees in the lineup this season, including UCLA-bound Drew Gordon, the program began the season ranked No. 15 in the USA Today national high school rankings. Andoh, who averaged 7.6 rebounds per game last season, played two seasons at Salpointe Catholic H.S. in Tucson, Ariz., where he was named the regional player of the year before moving to San Jose. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Andoh’s father is a civil engineer.

“Enoch Andoh is a big key to this class because he is a rugged player who can bang with other big men, he knows how to play in the post,” said Flannery. “He comes from a great program in California, and we feel he can be a perfect fit in a position that is very important in our system. Enoch has an opportunity to come in and help us because he is active enough to step away from the basket, but what he really likes to do is mix it up inside.”

Cohen averaged 12.9 points per game and nearly eight rebounds per game as a junior at Abington Friends School, and he will soon join a long line of Bison cagers from the Philadelphia area. The hard-working Cohen is a two-time First Team All-Friends League selection, and he helped lead the Kangaroos to three league championship game appearances, including one league title in 2006. He is serving as a team captain this season, following in the footsteps of his older brother Aron, who now plays at Penn.

“Bryan is a 6’5” wing who really handles the basketball well enough to play the one, two or three positions,” praised Flannery. “Any time you can recruit a player from Philadelphia, you know you are getting someone with good toughness, who has gone up against other great players. He has played good competition both in high school and in the summer in AAU ball. Bryan is a very good decision-maker on the floor. He knows how to play the game. He has a nose for the ball and can score.”

Born and raised in the Bahamas, Leo left the islands with little organized basketball experience to attend high school at St. Pius X in Houston, Texas prior to his junior year. Even in his first year playing American basketball, the 6’9”, 210-pounder was a starter on a team that won the private school state championship last season, and his team is currently ranked No. 6 in the greater Houston area. Leo worked out with Hakeem Olajuwon last summer in addition to playing a full summer with the Houston Hoopstars AAU team and has rapidly improved his skills.

“Probese is a guy who we looked at during the July period, and he quickly caught our eye,” said Flannery. “He is extremely athletic, one of those rare 6’9” players who can run. He is a player with the kind of potential where we are so excited to think about where he could end up. He is very long and he wants to score. Probese really gives us a different dimension.”

The Bucknell men’s basketball team is coming off a 67-66 victory over La Salle on Monday, and the Bison are in a break period for final exams before resuming their schedule on Dec. 16 at Wake Forest.

2007-08 Bucknell Basketball Preview

Bucknell Bison

Overall Rank: #129

Conference Rank: #2 Patriot

2006-07: 22-9, 13-1, 1st
(t)

2006-07 postseason: none

Bucknell allowed Holy Cross to
catch up last year in the two horse race for Patriot League supremacy. So what
happens when the Bison lose three of their top four scorers and all the major
pieces of the past NCAA Tournament appearances? Not much. Thanks to some decent
recruiting over the years, Bucknell has plenty of talent that is ready to step
in.

Who’s Out:

Chris McNaughton, Donald
Brown and Abe Badmus were staples on the Bucknell squad. McNaughton, a Bison
folk hero for years, averaged 12.0 points and 5.9 rebounds during his senior
campaign. Brown did a little bit of everything, averaging 12.0 points, a team
high 6.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals. There is no doubt the frontcourt
will look drastically different and even little used forward Andrew Morrison is
headed out. Abe Badmus, who led the team with 3.1 assists per game, leaves
behind plenty of proven players behind him.

Who’s In:

Coach Pat Flannery continues to
bring in some quality recruits. Center Todd O’Brien may be the most important
right away. The 6-11 New Holland, Pennsylvania product is not a true post player
and will step outside and hit the mid-range jumper. In high school he averaged a
double-double and added over five blocks per contest, but the competition left
something to be desired. Bucknell could use another big body if O’Brien proves
he is ready to play as a freshman. G.W. Boon is probably the best of the bunch.
The 6-4 forward is a decent shooter and a great rebounder and will use his
athleticism to make a huge impact in the coming years. Darryl Shazier, a 6-0
combo guard, is super quick. If he can handle running the point as a freshman,
he will see some quality minutes, otherwise he will likely be used as a
defensive stopper off the bench.

Who to Watch:

John Griffin will man the
point guard spot after averaging 10.5 points and 2.7 assists last year. The
senior will be looked upon to be the new leader of the team. Jason Vegotsky has
plenty of experience after starting 24 contests during the 2006-2007 campaign
and, along with Griffin, will provide a decent long range shooting duo. Justin
Castleberry, Stephen Tyree and Rob Thomas have all been stuck behind more
experienced players on the depth chart and will be the candidates to step up and
help replace the production of Badmus and Brown.

Final Projection:

Darren Mastropaolo did the
dirty work under the basket to open up McNaughton. Without McNaughton,
Mastropaolo may be asked to do a little more scoring. However, Patrick Behan
could simply take over for McNaughton, leaving Mastropaolo to set screens and
grab rebounds. Behan, another one of those talented underclassmen who was
waiting on the bench, is a talented long range shooter. At 6-8 and 225 pounds
the sophomore needs to become a bigger threat in the paint, but there are not
many other choices. Despite the loss of so many stars, Bucknell is not going
anywhere. The Patriot League championship will be a battle between the Bison and
Holy Cross and, like last year, could be one of the most exciting conference
races in the nation.
