The seventh annual
ESPNU BracketBusters event, a two-day men’s college basketball extravaganza
pitting potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other on February 20-21,
will feature 13 nationally televised games – on either ESPN2, ESPNU or
ESPN360.com -- selected from a pool of 102 teams.

For the fourth straight year, ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, will
televise five BracketBusters games while ESPN360.com, ESPN’s customized
broadband service, will offer two. ESPN2 will televise six contests. ESPN360.com
will also simulcast ESPN2’s six telecasts. The 13 BracketBusters matchups will
be announced February 2, while game time and network assignments will be
announced February 9.

The 102-team field is highlighted by the return of last season’s BracketBusters
participant Davidson, who made it to the Elite Eight in last year’s NCAA
Tournament and will feature 12 teams from the Mid-American and Colonial
Athletic; 10 from the Ohio Valley, Missouri Valley, Horizon League and Metro
Atlantic Athletic; nine from the Western Athletic and Big West; four from the
America East and Southern; three from the Big South; two from the Big Sky,
Summit League and West Coast; and one from the Mid-Eastern Athletic, Northeast
and Patriot.

As part of the agreement, all 13 of the BracketBusters home teams, as well as
the remaining 38 home squads, will play a “return” game at the home facility of
their opponent in November or December of the following season.

This year’s BracketBusters pool features teams with 77 appearances in the last
five NCAA Tournaments, including a team in the Final Four - George Mason (2006);
one in the Elite Eight – Davidson (2008); and six Sweet Sixteen squads – Butler
(2007), Southern Illinois (2007), Bradley (2006), Wichita State (2006),
UW-Milwaukee (2005) and Nevada (2004).
Four Former Butler Bulldogs Sign Overseas

Four Butler players, Mike Green, Pete Campbell, Brandon Crone and Brandon Polk
have signed professional contracts to continue playing basketball
overseas next year. The quartet, who helped the Bulldogs to 79
victories over the past three seasons, will carry Butler's basketball
name to Turkey, Germany, Poland and Finland.

Green, who averaged
a team-leading 14.6 points last season, signed a one-year contract to
play for Antalya Buyuksehir in Antayla, Turkey. Campbell, one of the
top three-point field goal shooters ever to play at Butler, inked a
deal to play for the Dusseldorf Giants in the top league in Germany,
while Crone, the Most Valuable Player on Butler's 2006-07 squad, signed
to play for Kotwica Kolobrzeg S. A. in Kolobrzeg, Poland. Polk, who was
Butler's leading scorer in 2005-06, signed with Karhut Kauhajoen in
Finland.

Green started every game during his two seasons with the
Bulldogs, and he averaged 14.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists for
his career. He was named the Horizon League Player of the Year in
2007-08 and was chosen as the Most Outstanding Player at the 2008
Horizon League Championship. He also was named the Most Outstanding
Player at the 2007 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. A first team
Mid-Major All-American, Green was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers'
summer league team in July.

Campbell finished his career as
Butler's all-time leader for three-point field goal shooting with a
.483 career shooting percentage. He also set a Butler single season
record for three-point field goal shooting with a .519 mark in 2006-07,
and he finished sixth on Butler's all-time list for three-pointers with
183 in just two seasons. He averaged 11.7 points as a senior and ranked
among the "Top 35" players in the NCAA Division I in both three-point
field goals and three-point field goal shooting.

Crone was
Butler's second-leading rebounder (4.7) and third-leading scorer (11.4)
in 2006-07. He was a starting forward in his final 77 games at Butler,
and he was a co-captain on Butler's last NCAA "Sweet 16" team
(2006-07). He was named to the Horizon League Championship
All-Tournament Team as a senior, after scoring a team-high 35 points in
Butler's two tournament games. He finished his career with 997 points
and 493 rebounds.

Polk, who was named Butler's Most Valuable
Player in both his junior and senior seasons, was chosen Horizon League
Player of the Year in 2005-06. He averaged 18.0 points and 4.6 rebounds
in his final season with the Bulldogs, a campaign that saw him earn
first team All-Horizon League and second team NABC All-District 10
recognition. He led Butler in scoring for two straight years and posted
Butler's ninth-highest single season scoring total (593 points) as a
senior.

Mike Green,
who helped lead Butler to the best two-year men's basketball record in
school history, has earned a roster spot on the Cleveland Cavaliers'
summer league team. He will compete with the Cavaliers at the 2008 NBA
Summer League in Las Vegas, Nevada, July 11-20, with hopes of landing
an NBA roster spot in the fall.

Green, who led the 30-4 Bulldogs
in scoring, rebounding and assists last season, is one of 13 players
selected for the Cavaliers' summer roster. The summer team also
includes Cleveland's 2008 draft picks, J. J. Hickson (19th overall) of
North Carolina State and Darnell Jackson (52nd overall) of Kansas, plus
former UW-Milwaukee player, Clay Tucker.

Green helped lead Butler
to a two-year record of 59-11 and two straight trips to the NCAA
Tournament, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2007. This past season,
the Bulldogs captured Horizon League regular season and tournament
championships, won the Great Alaska Shootout, captured a second
consecutive Wooden Tradition championship and posted a first-round NCAA
Tournament win over South Alabama. Butler was ranked in the "Top 25"
for a school-record 19 consecutive weeks, including a school-record
five weeks in the "Top 10."

The lone Butler player to start every
game over the past two seasons, Green averaged 14.6 points, 6.5
rebounds and 5.1 assists as a senior. He was named the Horizon League
Player of the Year in 2007-08 and was chosen as the Most Outstanding
Player at the 2008 Horizon League Championship. He also was named the
Most Outstanding Player at the 2007 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska
Shootout. A first team Mid-Major All-American, Green received both the
Chip Hilton Award and the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award at the 2008
NCAA Final Four.

Horizon League Finals: No Upset Here, Butler Wins

INDIANAPOLIS – This group of Butler seniors have been ranked since the third week of this season, were ranked most of last year, won last year’s Pre-season NIT, won this year’s Great Alaskan Shootout, knocked off Ohio State, Maryland, Purdue, Tennessee, Michigan, Texas Tech, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Florida State over the last two years, but they never have cut down the nets in the Horizon League Championship.

They can now cross that off of their to-do list since they beat Cleveland State tonight in the Horizon League Championship on their home court 70-55.

Early in the first half it looked like a Butler beat-down of Cleveland State as Drew Streicher hit two 3-pointers and Mike Green, Pete Campbell and A. J. Graves all hit 3-pointers to go up 20-6 at the 13:24 mark.

But Cleveland State (21-12) regained their composure and fought back behind J’Nathan Bullock’s nine points to tie it at 34-34 on two free throws by Cedric Jackson with 1:50 remaining in the half.

Two free throws by Green and another two by Graves sent Butler (29-3) into the locker room up 38-34.

In the second half the Bulldogs came out firing as Green and Streicher both hit 3-pointers to put Butler up 43-36. But a 3-pointer by Bullock and a layup by D’Audray Brown got the Vikings within two points at 43-41.

That is when Butler put the lockdown on Cleveland State, for just about the next 10 minutes Cleveland State was held to just three points as Butler scored 17 points to go up 60-44.

According to Cleveland State coach Gary Waters that was the difference in the game.

“They clamped down a little harder defensively and I thought they did a better job on us in the second half,” said Waters. “For about 10 minutes we had a hard time scoring. I thought that was the difference in the game.”

Butler coach Brad Stevens thought it was some adjustments they made in the second half and rebounding that allowed his team to open up the game in the second half.

“I thought our guys adjusted and did a better job on the glass. I thought the first two processions of the second half when we turned them over set a tone for the rest of the game,” explained Stevens.

From that point on Butler held a double digit lead until the end.

“It is something we talked about from the beginning of the year we were setting our goals. None of us had ever cut down the nets in March, “said a relieved Streicher. “Fortunately we were able to play here at Hinkle. To cut them down here was very special. I think it is something we are going to treasure forever.”

Green led all scorers with 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds too. Bullock led the Vikings with 21 points.

Notes:

-Butler has been nationally ranked (Top 25) for 33 weeks since November 27, 2006.

-Butler set a new Horizon League record for the best two-year total with 57 victories since the start of last year.

-This is Cleveland State’s first ever appearance in the Horizon League Finals.

-As strange as this may seem this is the first time Cleveland State and Butler have met in the Horizon League Tournament.

-Former Wright State coach Ed Schilling was in attendance sitting next to his father former Butler player and Hall of Famer Big Ed Schilling.

-Cleveland State had maybe 50 enthusiastic fans in attendance which would be the most fans the Vikings have produced at a league tournament road game since they joined the Horizon League in 1994.

-This is Butler’s first Horizon League Championship they have won on their home court.

-At the end of the game about 40 Butler students from the Dawg Pound ran on to the court for the obligatory celebration on ESPN, the other few hundred of the Dawg Pound Students stayed in their bleachers at the end of the court and cheered like this was just another win. The Dawg Pound had just a few hundred students tonight instead of the usual thousand or so they usually have. Their numbers are a little low since it is Spring Break on campus.

-Brad Stevens had a little piece of the net in his pocket during the game tonight from 2001, Butler’s last Horizon League Championship.

-This is Butler 5th championship since 1997, second only to Xavier’s six championships.

-The all-tournament team:

Mike Green -MVP - Butler
Matt Howard - Butler
J’Nathan Bullock - Cleveland State
Drew Streicher - Butler
Jarryd Lloyd - Valpo

Key Roleplayers:

Willie Veasley, Sophomore, Guard,
2.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg

Pete Campbell, Senior, Forward,
8.9 ppg, 1.6 rpg

Why They Can Surprise:

The Bulldogs have won game after
game thanks to their stifling defense and efficient offense. On par with
traditional Butler defenses, this group is not flashy. They will not have many
steals leading to fast breaks or magnificent blocks that ignite the Butler
faithful, but it is straight up tough defense. When they have the ball, Butler
only turns it over about ten times per contest.

Having great shooters like A.J.
Graves and Pete Campbell certainly helps the efficient offense. Graves averages
13.9 points per game and Campbell adds 10.8. Both hit about three long balls per
contest and take a vast majority of their shots from long range. If the shot is
not falling, Graves and Campbell will struggle to find another way to put points
on the board. However, luckily for the Bulldogs, Graves and Campbell rarely have
off days.

Why They Can Disappoint:

Mike Green, a 6-1 point guard,
leads the team in rebounding and that is not good. Green is a dynamic scorer, a
great floor leader and a very good rebounder for his size, and that says more
about the lack of forwards than it does about Green’s ability to rebound.
Campbell, a 6-7 forward, spends most of his time on the perimeter and Drew
Streicher, who plays at the four spot, is really a wing and does not help out
much in the rebounding department. The addition of Matt Howard has helped the
overall rebounding of the team, since Howard is a forward who actually hangs out
in the paint, but Green still leads the team. With Butler’s style of play, they
are going to suffer on the boards, but the more they can control the damage, the
better.

Who To Watch:

Julian Betko and Streicher, a
former walk-on, will not put up big numbers, but both will be starting. Like
just about everybody else at Butler, they can hit the outside shot, but their
defense is what keeps them in the lineup. As long as they play solid defense,
score a few points, grab a couple boards and dish off an assist or two, Betko
and Streicher have done their job. Willie Veasley does not have the size of
Betko and Streicher, but the 6-3 wing is a better rebounder and will see plenty
of minutes off the bench.

Bracketology: Reader Mailbag

Bubble
time is not only a fun time, but its a testy time.. after all, everybody wants
their favorite team to make the Big Dance. Thus the amount of emails I
gets grew substantially since this year's Daily

Bracketology started. In honor of some of the better, and more repeated
emails, here are some reader questions and responses (edited slightly to fit
into an article)..

--
Question From Grant (Oregon fan):

Hey
Shawn, I appreciate your brackets, but as a pac-ten fan I noticed something
inconsistent Sunday.

1. First off, Arizona has no business being in over
Oregon
or ASU. Both teams finished ahead of Arizona, playing the EXACT same conference
schedule, and both teams swept Arizona. While Arizona has a great SOS and
RPI, neither Oregon nor Arizona State have atrocious SOS. The ONLY way you can
justify putting Arizona in is RPI.
2. So, if you like to only look at RPI, that's fine. However, Oregon and ASU
finished the same in conference, split their h2h, and Oregon has a better RPI.

You see now how this doesn't work. Either you go with RPI or you don't.

My response:

First off, the purpose of bracketology is to project what the committee
would/will do.. and not to repeat what I think is right. Personally, I think all
three of the teams mentioned are overrated and shouldn't be in the field (each
is boosted by being in a name conference.. while none did anything terribly
impressive in non-conference play). Second of all, though your comments make
perfect logical sense.. I wouldn't give the committee too much credit for being
rational. You may have noticed.. they tend to make poor decisions. Missouri
State had a 21 RPI a couple years back and didn't make it.. yet Zona with a 29
RPI is almost a lock to make it simply because they're in the Pac-10 and not the
MVC. Part of doing a bracketology column is taking into account the committee's
biases and faulty reasoning.

In terms of ASU vs Oregon, I think the committee will basically focus on the
RPI's of each team's good wins. Both have two wins over Arizona and one over
Stanford. But they'll like Xavier (9 RPI) better than KSU (45), and then ASU has
an extra Top 50 win against a team the committee will probably like a lot (USC).
That is the slightest of differences.. and ultimately these team's resume are
highly similar. If one gets in an

--
Question From Thomas (Dayton fan):

Shawn, can you tell me why you and so many other pundits have the likes of
Virginian Tech, Maryland and Florida in over

Dayton.

(Thomas then went into a lengthy and well reasoned statistical analysis of why
Dayton is better.)

My
response:

(First
off, note that VT, Maryland, and Florida are no longer in the field ahead of
Dayton.. as this question was from a few days ago. But Flyer fans have been the
most consistent emailers, so I wanted to generally respond to the woes of the
Dayton fan.)

The
issue with Dayton is this.. they're in the A10 and not the Pac-10. That's really
what it comes down to. As I noted in the above response.. part of doing
bracketology is taking the committee's bias into account.. and historically
they've favored the BCS conference. I think the upsets of this week of Gonzaga
in the WCC and South Alabama in the Sun Belt will be damning to Dayton.
The committee is willing to give mid-major leagues a 2nd bid here and there..
but with the WCC possibly getting three bids, the Sun Belt possibly getting two,
and the A10 getting two.. you can imagine committee members who will simply be
blown away, flabbergasted if you will, by the possibility that these spots are
being taken away from BCS leagues.

Even
worse.. Dayton's big wins can be explained away. The committee can reason
that Louisville wasn't at full strength then.. and thus that win isn't so great.
For the Pitt game, they'll say that Mike Cook had just gotten hurt, Fields
missed half the game, and how it was a trap game for the Panthers..

Ultimately though, I agree with Flyer fans that Dayton should in fact make the
field.

--
Question From Scott (Butler fan):

I enjoy and follow your daily Bracketology and am a big fan of the site. My
question is your dropping
Butler
from a four seed to a six.

My
response:

(Since this email, I've moved Butler up to a low 5 seed, but the point is the
same.) Three little words: RPI. There are no doubt arguments Butler should
get as high as a 3 seed. For example, Butler is currently the 12th ranked team
in country.. going by the AP voters then, Butler should really get the last 3
seed. Going by wins.. Butler has 28, which is 3rd overall in the country, behind
only UNC and Memphis. Thus Butler should get a 1 seed. Further, this is
not Drake or Saint Mary's, ie programs with losing histories, but a storied
program that has consistently been good and consistently beaten top opponents.

The
RPI of 18 and SOS of 130-something will simply be too much for the positive
arguments to overcome. The unfortunate thing for Butler is that they didn't
actually schedule lightly.. but a lot of the big teams they scheduled won't make
the tournament. Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Southern Illinois, Texas Tech,
Florida State, Bradley.. those are either BCS teams or teams that many thought
had a great shot to make the NCAA Tournament. Butler beat them all.. and though
one of them might get in.. but it would have helped if 2 or 3 of those teams
ended up being tourney-worthy. Then of course, there was the dud against Drake..
the only legitimate Top 25 team Butler faced this season. The loss at home looks
bad.. and since it was so late, there wasn't enough time to make up for it.

Ultimately, I think Butler will get a low 5 seed or the top 6 seed.. and I think
it will be a rare occasion where the committee is right. Despite the great
record and respect from voters, I don't think the overall resume warrants a Top
16 seed.

(And
if Butler happens to lose tonight, then look out..)

Horizon League Semis: Butler Rolls Over UIC

INDIANAPOLIS -- The script worked out just like it was planned. The 14th ranked team in the country and #1 seed hosting the semifinal game pounds their opponent into submission to play in the championship game on their court Tuesday night.

Butler became the sixth straight number one seed to advance to the Horizon League Championship game by beating University of Illinois-Chicago 66-50.

This started out pretty well for UIC (18-15) as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a layup by Robert Bush and a lob from Stewart Spencer resulting in a thunderous dunk by Jermaine Dailey.

A quick layup by Mike Green and then a 3-pointer by A. J. Graves put Butler (28-3) up 5-4 at the 17:35 mark.

The Flames went back up by one when Dailey made a layup to make it 6-5 with 16:21 left.

UIC maintained a small lead until they finally pushed the lead up to five points when Scott Vandemeer was fouled by Butler’s Willie Veasley and made one of the two free throws to make it 16-11 at the 10:18 mark.

Butler went on an 18-2 run toward the end of the first half that resulted in a 10 point lead going into halftime at 34-24. The amazing thing was that Mike Green was responsible for 16 of the 18 points by either scoring or getting the assist.

Coming out of the half Butler continued the charge by going on a 19-5 run to push their lead to 24 points at 56-32 with 8:59 left in the game.

The Vikings whittled the lead down to 15 points with 2:07 remaining when Robert Kreps hit a 3-pointer to make it 63-48.

Two more free throws by Krebs and a 3-pointer by Pete Campbell for Butler got the final score to 66-50.

Butler really put the game away from 3-point land making 12 in 27 attempts (44.4 percent) and by just turning the ball over eight times.

Campbell who was 5-10 from 3-point land said 3-point shooting is what Butler looks to do.

“It is something we look to do. The important thing is when you hit shots like that you get stops on the other end. That’s what builds the lead and that’s what we need to do at certain points in the game,” explained Campbell.

Green led all scorers with 19 points, he was 5-8 from the field and 8-10 from the charity stripe plus he had seven assists.

“Mike had a great game, no question about it. He has played like that all season,’ said Butler coach Brad Stevens. “He played with great poise and found different guys, he found the right guys at the right time.”

It wasn’t just Stevens praising Green, UIC coach Jimmy Collins thinks he may be the Horizon League Player of the Year.

“He is the player of the year. He is a tremendous leader for this team. Green looks to set up everybody else. When he doesn’t get that accomplished he scores,” said Collins. .
