Scouting Report: An athletic, strong big man.

Strengths: Left handed. Good size for a power forward – the second tallest player at his position measured at the pre-draft camp. Good leaper. Very quick and agile for his size – fastest sprinter at the pre-draft camp among power forwards. Nice hook shot down low. Good back-to-the-basket scorer. Used to being double & triple-teamed. Can score with either hand. Good rebounder.

Weaknesses: Will be 22-years-old when next season begins. Didn’t play in a power conference so he didn’t go up against the toughest competition every game. Below average wingspan for his height. Doesn’t always go up strong when he gets the ball down low. Needs to develop a face-up game for the pros. Horrible free throw shooter. Inconsistent.

Projected 2008 Draft Range: Mid to late second round pick.

Consensus: Plaisted has a nice combination of tools and size that could make him a second round sleeper.

Why They Can Surprise:

BYU’s solid defense will keep them in any game. The team allows its opponents to shoot under 39 percent and few teams will have a better number than that. The team’s field-goal percentage on the offensive end is not as good as it was last season, but that is not the fault of Lee Cummard or Trent Plaisted.

Cummard shoots an incredible 56.9 percent from the floor. For a big man that is a good number, but for a guard who will take almost four long balls per game, that is an absolutely amazing number. Cummard, at 6-7, will not take all of his shots from outside and he does a decent job of finishing around the basket. Plaisted is the interior scoring threat and a great rebounder. Due to Plaisted, Cummard and fellow double-digit scorer Jonathan Tavernari, BYU ranks in the top 35 in rebounding margin.

Why They Can Disappoint:

The shooting percentage might be high, but the free-throw percentage is not. The majority of that can be blamed on Plaisted who gets to the line more than twice as much as anybody else and shoots a dreary 54.5 percent. All the other regular starters shoot over 80 percent from the charity stripe so as long as the Cougars keep the ball out of Plaisted’s hands late in the game it will not be a big issue. The turnover numbers are a little high, but a bigger concern in March might be the lack of depth. Freshman Jimmer Fredette is a decent sharpshooter off the bench and Chris Collinsworth gives the team another big man who can rebound, but that is pretty much where the bench ends.

Who To Watch:

Point guard Ben Murdock cannot be blamed for the turnovers as he dishes out 3.7 assists and only turns it over 1.5 times per game. Still, it is Murdock’s job to put his teammates in the best possible position to score. The senior rarely does any scoring, but he will have to keep the rest of the team happy by sharing the ball and keep the offense moving. If he can do that effectively, BYU could win a game or two.

Mid-Season All-America Teams

Although the college basketball season is only a couple of months old, the start of the new year is a great time to reflect on which stars shined the brightest in 2007. Many of the names below are familiar to even a casual fan, while a few of the names are only known to the sport's most passionate followers. There may not be an Oden or Durant among the group, but there could be a couple of lottery picks in the years ahead, and several who will make an NBA roster. I present to you the best of 2007 (by position):

THOUGHTS: 2 sophomores, 1 junior, and 2 seniors: even when you get outside the BCS conferences, there is plenty of evidence that upperclassmen no longer rule the courts by themselves.
BEST OF THE GROUP: Gary Forbes: Agudio is one of the top scorers in the country, but Forbes does a little of everything for a team that is 10-2.

BYU’s top three scorers all shot over 54 percent from the floor and two of them return. Coach Dave Rose’s motion offense yielded a high scoring, efficient offense last year and that will not change despite a couple key personnel losses. All the new faces will cause some problems, but once the Cougars adapt to the newcomers, they will compete for the top spot in the Mountain West Conference.

Who’s Out:

Losing Keena Young and his 17.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game is going to be a problem. Replacing those numbers will not be easy, but at least the scoring can come from somewhere else. The backcourt has lost starters Austin Ainge and Jimmy Balderson. Ainge’s experience and leadership was a big reason why the team was so efficient on offense. Mike Rose, Rashaun Broadus and Fernando Malaman were all decent contributors and have wrapped up their careers at BYU.

Who’s In:

The most important newcomer could end up being Lamont Morgan. The junior college transfer is a quick point guard who can use his speed to get to the basket and find his open teammates. Even if he does not earn the starting gig, Morgan is expected to see quality minutes. Incoming freshman Jimmer Fredette is a prolific scorer and could provide some offense off the bench this year. His overall game needs some polishing and he will need to learn to rely on his teammates, but the potential is there for a big season even as a freshman. Archie Rose has some experience after spending some time at Northeastern Colorado Junior College and Lee College. The 6-4 wing from the Bahamas is a solid shooter and the Cougars can never have too many shooters. Michael Loyd and walk-ons Nick Martineau and Matt Pinegar will add depth to the perimeter. At 6-9 and with the ability to put the ball on the floor, Chris Collinsworth is a versatile forward who will fit in perfectly with the Cougars up-tempo style of play. The Gatorade Player of the Year in Utah, Collinsworth can play either forward spot, but will need to gain some strength before he can effectively battle with opposing power forwards. The front line does not need much help this year, but James Anderson and Chris Miles will strengthen the depth of the unit. Anderson, a freshman, is headed to BYU after his two-year mission. The 6-11 center is a solid athlete who can run the floor extremely well for his size. Miles played for the Cougars during the 2004-2005 campaign before heading out on his mission. Miles is a solid shot blocker and defender and averaged 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds as a freshman for the Cougars.

Who to Watch:

Lee Cummard will be asked to be the new leader of the backcourt. The 6-6 junior averaged 9.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals last season. Breaking in a new point guard is never easy, but having a versatile, smart player like Cummard in the backcourt will certainly help. Ben Murdock played less than eight minutes a game, but he will be fighting with Morgan for the starting job. Sam Burgess is expected to start at the shooting guard spot. Burgess, like Murdock, was well down the bench during the 2006-2007 season. However, Burgess is a quality shooter and if the senior can continue his high percentage long range shooting while taking more shots, the Cougars backcourt will be just as dangerous as they were last year. If Burgess struggles, one of the newcomers will have to step up and take over the starting position.

Final Projection:

Outside of Cummard, there are concerns on the perimeter. That is not the case up front, despite the absence of Young. Trent Plaisted leads the way after averaging 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks last season. Plaisted earned second-team all-conference honors as both a freshman and a sophomore and that could very well be moved to first-team accolades now that Plaisted is an upperclassman. Jonathan Tavernari is more of a wing than a power forward, but the 6-6 reigning MWC Freshman of the Year works as a four in the BYU system. After averaging 6.5 points and 2.9 rebounds, bigger things are expected out of the talented, versatile forward. At 6-10 and 250 pounds, senior Vuk Ivanovic is not a bad guy to have coming in off the bench. He was limited in his playing time last year, but he has the abilities to be a bigger contributor. With the talented front line, BYU will be competitive in the MWC, but it will take the perimeter group stepping up big time for the Cougars to win the conference.

A stunner in Ann Arbor, and other happenings on the season's first Saturday

Well, by now you know that two-time Championship Subdivision champ Appalachian State went into Michigan and left with a 34-32 win, closing it out with a blocked field goal with six seconds remaining. How does this happen? For one, the Mountaineers didn't go into the Big House with their collective tail between their legs. Secondly, the Michigan defense continued its sieve-like performance for the third straight game. To be honest, the offense minus Mike Hart didn't show too much either. Without Hart's 188 yards and three scores, this one could have been worse than it actually was. Lastly, the Michigan players may have focused more on the "1-AA" part of the opponent rather than the fact that the Mountaineers can play some football. So where do the Wolverines go from here? Oregon comes to town next week in a game that has all the looks of an 0-2 start when you compare the offensive styles of Oregon and Appalachian State. Both teams like to spread out defenses and use their speed on the perimeter. If Michigan and defensive coordinator Ron English can't take care of their issues in the coming week of practice and film study, things could go from bad to worse for Lloyd Carr as far as job security is concerned. Two other games that caught my eye were a pair of wins for Mountain West schools at home. Naturally, the two games were part of a doubleheader on Versus, making the wins by Wyoming and BYU all the more important for the conference. Wyoming held Virginia to three points in a 23-3 win that in all honesty wasn't that close. The Cavs, who some liked to make a move in the ACC Coastal, did very little on offense, and Jameel Sewell didn't look 100% recovered from off-season left wrist surgery. And BYU handled Arizona in Provo, 20-7. Two players making their first appearance on the college stage, QB Max Hall and RB Harvey Unga played extremely well, and a defense that made huge strides a year ago in winning the MWC held Arizona scoreless until the game's final minute. For fans of the Cats who were hoping that the hiring of Sonny Dykes to run the offense would mean an explosive attack, slow down the thinking. When your playmakers don't have a history of consistently making plays (that's a big difference from simply having talent), a new system doesn't turn an average attack into the Indianapolis Colts. Have patience, there's still a long way to go. A great scene in Blacksburg this afternoon as well, but I wouldn't read too much into the final score (17-7) too much for two reasons. One, the emotion of the day was something that no other football team has had to deal with. Secondly, ECU is pegged as one of the better teams in CUSA this season, meaning that they're no slouch. Of course, there were some turnovers that could be deadly in Baton Rouge next weekend, but the Hokies will work out those kinks throughout the week. With all the attention being paid to "Bowden Bowl IX" on Monday, people had better pay more attention to Boston College, who beat Wake Forest 38-28 in Chestnut Hill. Matt Ryan threw for 408 yards and five scores, and corner DeJuan Tribble had three picks on the afternoon. The most important development in this one could actually be the separated throwing shoulder of Wake QB Riley Skinner. Redshirt sophomore Brett Hodges played well in Skinner's stead, but you know that the Deacs will need Skinner if they want to repeat as ACC champs. Right up there with the Michigan game in terms of excitement was Colorado's comeback win over CSU in overtime. Cody Hawkins performed well in his first start for the Buffs, taking some pressure off of the head coach had things not gone so well. Oh, the head coach is his father, which could make for an interesting dynamic in terms of fan opinion if Cody struggles. But with Cody at the helm, the future looks bright in Boulder. Lastly, not to take anything away from Auburn and their comeback win over Kansas State, but the Tigers had no business winning that game. But thanks to 18 penalties and a seeming unwillingness to give left tackle Alesana Alesana consistent help with All-American defensive end Quentin Groves in his first college start. Groves wreaked havoc on the KSU offense in the fourth quarter, pressuring Josh Freeman countless times and forcing the fumble that was returned for the game-clinching touchdown. Auburn is a young team overall, so they should be able to work out the kinks as the season progresses. Almost forgot, don't ever...ever kick the ball to Cal's DeSean Jackson. If you decide to out of bravado and end up getting burned as Tennessee's Britton Colquitt did tonight, you essentially dug your own grave. Not too smart.

One of the best games of the season. Both have struggled (relatively) lately, but OSU has Greg Oden and is at home.

in SEC, and Vandy is playing with confidence. With UK prone to slow starts, Vandy could jump on them early.

Badgers are more veteran team, but Oden and company are meshing quickly. With Oden closer to full strength, Buckeyes will ride him to a big win.
