State of '08: Tennessee

Duke or Carolina? BC or UMASS? Gonzaga or Washington.. or Washington State? What is the best program in each state? While there's not much competition in Hawaii.. there are great debates to be had in loaded regions like California, North Carolina, and Texas. The State of '08 is a ranking of every program in every state.. based mostly on recent success (the last five years) mixed in with subjective factors such as conference prestige, historical success, and overall program direction.

TENNESSEE

MEMPHIS - Whatever blueprint John Calipari follows seems to work. In his eighth year at Memphis, the Tigers advanced to the National Title game after making back to back Elite Eights. At UMASS, it also took eight years for him to reach the Final Four.

TENNESSEE - The Vols are in the midst of a good run under Bruce Pearl, three NCAA Tournaments in a row including back to back Sweet Sixteen trips. Before Pearl arrived, Tennessee hadn't made the Tourney in five years.

VANDERBILT - Vandy has been a consistent winner the last five seasons under Kevin Stallings. There's been four 20-win seasons, 5 postseason trips, and a pair of Sweet Sixteen runs. After winning 26 games last year (the 2nd best in school history), the team's first round loss to Siena was a bit of a downer.

BELMONT - Long-time coach Rick Byrd is suddenly the leader of a mid-major power. Belmont has made three NCAA Tournaments in a row, and is once agan favored to win the Atlantic Sun in 08-09.

AUSTIN PEAY - Dave Loos is nearing 20 years at APSU, a time in which the Govs have consistently been one of the top teams in the OVC. In the last decade, there hasn't even been a sub-.500 finish in conference play. In the last six years, they've made 2 NCAA trips and one NIT.

6. MIDDLE TENNESSEE - Before Kermit Davis took over in 2002, MTSU was coming off a brutal season that included just 4 D1 wins. While Davis hasn't led the Blue Raiders to the Big Dance, the program has made amazing strides under his leadership. Last year, the team advanced to the Sun Belt finals, and many feel they are that league's team to beat in '09.

7. CHATTANOOGA - Just as Davidson is the current Southern Conference darling, Chattanooga was once the league's team to beat. The last decade has been a bit more pedestrian however, with just a lone tourney trip in 2005, though the team came close in '03 & '04 as well. The last few teams have been mediocre, with win totals boosted by playing an oddly high amount of D2 teams.

8. EAST TENNESSEE STATE - With the exception of a horrible 2005 campaign, ETSU has been one of the A-Sun's most consistent winners. In 2004, the Bucs won the league title, in 2007 they dominated the regular season before falling to Belmont in the finals, and they were solid once again in 2008.

9. TENNESSEE TECH - The Golden Eagles haven't won their conference tournament in over 40 years, but they've come close in the last decade. From 2000-2003, Tech was one of the best teams in the OVC but they couldn't get over the postseason hump. The last five years have been up and down however, and this year could be one of the downers.

10. LIPSCOMB - From 2002 to 2004, this was one of the country's worst program. But after those initial growing pains, this young program has made nice progress in the A-Sun. 2006 was the program's best season with 21 wins, a 143 RPI, and a close loss to Belmont in the conference title game. This year, expectations are a bit muted.

11. TENNESSEE STATE - In the early part of the decade, Tennessee State was one of the country's worst programs. But a lot of progress has been made, and last year was the first time in a decade that the Tigers won an OVC Tournament game. Not only did TSU win one game, but they made it to the conference championship.

12. TENNESSEE-MARTIN - Over the last 20 years, UTM has hovered between bad and worse, with only 2 winning seasons in that period. But last year was surprisingly mediocre with a 15-16 D1 record and 11-9 OVC finish. Now, there's suddenly high expectations for the first time, and some publications are projecting a league title.

CHATTANOOGA – Sometime time seems to stand still and tonight for Wright State coach Brad Brownell the game clock just seemed to be frozen as Chattanooga rained a blizzard of 3-pointers over the last 47 seconds to erase a 25 point lead and get within three points before losing the Championship game 87-82.

In the first half Wright State (8-3) came out on fire going on a 34-5 run to take a 34-7 lead at the 10:20 mark. The Raiders were led by Troy Tabler’s 14 points (5-7) and Vaughn Duggins' 13 points (5-6). They shot 64.3 percent (18-28) and 62.5 (10-16) percent from beyond the 3-point line.

“Duggins made shots over our hands and Brown made shots,” said Chattanooga coach John Shulman. “They are a methodical basketball team that beat Butler 43-42. We tried to speed them up and they make shots. If the shots don’t go in, it looks good, they go in, end of game.”

Chattanooga (8-5) got the deficit down to 16 points at 50-34 at the half by making four 3-pointers and shooting a respectable 47.8 percent (11-23).

The Wright State came out to start the second half with a 16-7 run to get their lead to 66-41 with 13:04. The Raiders were cruising to victory until the 2:33 mark when the Mocs went on a 24-10 run.

You read that right, it was 34 points scored by both teams in less than three minutes.

It was led by five 3-pointers by Stephen McDowell and a total of six out of eight in that 2:33 time span.

Brownell thought that being on the road against a team down by a lot with nothing to lose contributed to the big Mocs’ comeback.

“It is hard to play with a big lead like that on another person’s court. Everyone thinks it is really easy. The other team is playing a little bit looser because they are already down. You have to be careful not to be a little bit tentative,” explained Brownell. “Where we really won the game was in the second half, I think we defended well, especially the first 5-7 minutes.”

The Raiders were led by Duggins’ game-high 22 points and Todd Browns 21 points. Troy Tabler ended the game with 16 points and Jordan Pleiman put in 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Raiders.

Dr Pepper Classic: Sights and Sounds

-At Wright State’s walk-through today it looked like a hospital on the side-line. There were some crutches on the press table, trainer Tony Ortiz’s medical bag was sitting out on the table and injured player Gavin Horne was also sitting on the table with his ankle in an inflatable boot that was hooked up to what appeared to be a car battery. It is called a Game Ready—Accelerated Recovery Unit device that compresses a sprained ankle to force the swelling out of it. The boot part of it is filled with ice and cold water and the battery provided power to circulate the cold water around the ankle. On the sideline across the court sat John David Gardner who was hit in the eye in the first game and suffered a concussion. His right eye is almost swollen shut. It will be a few days before he plays again.

-Three-quarters of Wright State’s walk-through was spent on defense which is not surprising for a team known for its hard-nosed defense.

-Chattanooga’s walk-through was light running, stretching, shooting and then some light work on defense and offense.

-I asked Chattanooga’s assistant coach Brent Jolly which Wright State player he would take if he could have one and he said Vaughn Duggins because they could use another shooting guard.

-When I asked Wright State assistant coach Mike Winiecki which Chattanooga player he would take if he could have one he said that for his team’s needs he would take reserve player Kevin Goffney for the spark he provides when he comes into the game.

-Chattanooga coach John Shulman sent a case of Dr. Pepper over to Wright State coach Brad Brownell after he complained that he couldn’t get a bottle of Dr. Pepper at the Dr. Pepper Classic. Shulman was teasing Brownell as they passed each other because Brownell did not know if Wright State was a Pepsi or Coke school. For the record, Wright State is a Pepsi school and Shulman is happy that Chattanooga is a Coke school.

-When Brownell was asked what worried him most about the Mocs this was his reply:
“Their size, rebounding and athleticism are problems. They are very good at home; they feed off the crowd and really get after you. They do a lot of things to disrupt you. We have a lot of young kids that are going to be thrown into the fire and we have a little bit of a short bench tonight. It will not be a game that is an easy flow where you can get in and pass the ball around. It will be a game where they are up into you, they are trapping you, and they are forcing you to make decisions. It will be a pretty hostile environment and our kids will be challenged by it. They are a terrific offensive rebounding team. If they can do that and turn you over, those are the two things we have to do a better job against to win.”

-Shulman was asked the same thing and this was his reply:
“They defend, I don’t like playing against teams that defend, and that is what Brad’s do. They probably have about 65 offensive sets and in one day you can’t prepare for all that. They are very methodical about what they do offensively, they do a nice job making free throws and they know how to win games. They beat Butler that is why they are 43rd or 48th in the RPI depending upon who you listen to. To win we need to play our way and our way is fast. I don’t think they want to play fast. We need to make it loud and a little bit crazy and use our athleticism. We need to use our depth and do some neat things on the glass.”

CHATTANOOGA – Winning is not usual territory for Chattanooga, since they have a better than .800 winning percentage over the years in the annual Dr. Pepper Classic, but winning by 24 points is a little unusual as the Mocs beat up on Murray State 74-50.

To understand the total destruction that took place here in the second game of the night it would be appropriate to whip out some stats.

Chattanooga (8-4) held the Racers to just 5.9 percent, that is not a typo, it really was 5.9 percent (1-17) from 3-point land. Another coach once said he could stand at half court and drop kick in one in 17 attempts. Well he actually said 18 attempts, but close enough.

Murray State (5-5) took a whopping 60 shots and made just 18 of them for a paltry 30 percent from the field while the Mocs were very efficient shooting 50 percent (22-44) from the field including 47.7 from beyond the 3-pointline (9-19).

Chattanooga out-scored the Racers 40-23 in the first half and 34-27 in the second half.

The only drama in the game happened twice and it both times it was only a slight drama. In the first half when the Mocs were up by 17 points with 10:52 left and Murray State went on a little run fueled by hitting three layups and five foul shots to get the game to within nine points at 26-17 at the 6:33 mark.

A couple of foul shots by Kenyon Sheard stopped the bleeding and Mocs went back to dismantling the Racers.

In the second half the Races went on a 9-0 run to cut the Mocs’ lead from 17 points to eight points at 40-32. Chattanooga put that to an end with an 11-4 run over the next almost six minutes to get the score back to 51-36 with 12:16 left yo play.

Chattanooga coach John Shulman didn’t like the little runs too much but was thankful his bench came in and played well.

“You give up a 17 point lead and how comfortable do you feel? Our bench carried us and pulled it out for us,” said Shulman. “I went with them (bench) and now they feel good about themselves.”

Murray State coach Billy Kennedy thought the Mocs defense had a lot to do with his team’s poor shooting along with just missing shots they normally make.

“Their defense was very good and we just missed shots,” explained Kennedy. “They were more physical and they played with a lot of confidence.

Kevin Goffney came off the bench for Chattanooga to lead all scorers with 16 points.

Notes:
-Murray State leads the all-time series 4-2.
-The Mocs are 29-6 all-time in the Dr. Pepper Classic.
-Shulman was joking around during his post game comments when he said he was trying to find a way to keep Wright State coach Brad Brownell’s team out of the tournament but couldn’t find another team to play. He meant that as a tribute to how good the Raiders are this year.
-Murray State plays Belmont at 6 pm on Sunday.
-Wright State plays host Chattanooga at 8 pm on Sunday.

Davidson 92 - Chattanooga 80

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The backcourt trio of Stephen Curry, Max Paulhus Gosselin and Jason Richards combined for 71 points to lead the Davidson Wildcats to their fifth straight victory in a 92-80 triumph at SoCon foe Chattanooga Monday evening at The McKenzie Arena. The victory for Davidson was just their third against the Mocs on their home court in 18 tries as the Wildcats remained unbeaten in league play at 3-0 and improved to 9-3 overall. Chattanooga fell to 5-6 and 0-2 in conference play.

The freshman Curry led all players with 30 points by draining 11-of-21 from the floor, including 6-of-13 from long range. The shooting guard also grabbed 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.

Richards contributed 19 points, one shy of his career high, with 17 points and all three of his trifectas coming in the final 10 minutes. Entering the game second in the nation with 8.3 assists per game, the point guard dished out nine more, plus hauled in eight rebounds to nearly register a triple-double.

The surprising scoring outburst came from Paulhus Gosselin, who poured in a career-high 22 points, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. The offensive output was a surprise because the sophomore was averaging just 5.1 points a game and had hit just three three-pointers all season.

Chattanooga held a two-point advantage at the break, 42-40, and doubled that following a Marcus Watts layup a couple minutes into the second half. But Curry drilled a three, and junior Thomas Sander dropped a trey in to tie the score at 50. Another three-pointer by Curry on the next possession gave Davidson an advantage it never relinquished.

The lead, however, remained between one and five points until Richards took over the majority of the scoring. His three-pointer with 9:33 to play, followed by a Curry trey, put the Wildcats up seven, 67-60. Then with 6:42 on the clock, Richards’ three-point play boosted the lead to 11 at 75-64. Twice Keddric Mays dropped in three-pointers for the Mocs, only to have Richards answer with a long ball each time, maintaining the 11-point bulge.

Chattanooga had one last gasp, cutting the deficit to three at 83-80 with 2:55 to play after a driving layup by Kevin Bridgewaters. Richards had the answer again, however, dropping in five of six from the charity stripe over the next minute of play, while the Mocs could not score another point.

The hot shooting of Paulhus Gosselin helped the Wildcats jump out to an early lead which reached as many as 10 in the opening stanza. Of Davidson’s first 25 points, 16 came from Paulhus Gosselin as he nailed his first four shots from downtown.

The Mocs battled back, taking one-point leads on three occasions before Mays canned a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the half for the 42-40 UTC lead at the intermission.

Three-point shooting dominated the game as Davidson hit 14-of-32 (.438) from beyond the arc and Chattanooga was even more accurate at 13-of-28 (.464). Inside the arc was another story as the Wildcats held the Mocs under 40 percent overall (27-of-68, .397) for the game while shooting 46.4 percent (32-of-69) themselves. Davidson topped 50 percent in the second half, hitting 8-of-14 threes (.471) and 18-of-34 overall (.529).
