College: Georgetown

Class: Senior

Position: C

Height: 7”2”

Weight: 275lbs

Accolades: Fourth Team All-American – CHN (08), Second Team All-American – AP (08), First Team All-Big East (08), Big East All-Tournament Team (08), First Team All-Big East (07), Second Team All-Big East (06).

Scouting Report: A huge, intimidating presence at both ends of the floor.

Strengths: Size – at 7’2” 275lbs – Hibbert will be one of the biggest guys on the court in the NBA not named Shaq. Very good mobility for a man his size – can move his feet laterally and can get up and down the floor fairly good for a big guy. Nice post moves – can score on hooks with either hand, also has nice drop step moves. Good passer for his size and position. Good hands. Intimidating shot blocking presence. Good range on his jumper.

Weaknesses: Needs to still get stronger, faster and better conditioned for the NBA. Can still be a little clumsy. Doesn’t always finish strong down low – should be dunking everything. Still a work in progress – big guys take longer to develop. Didn’t really dominate his senior year as expected.

Projected 2008 Draft Range: Mid to late first round pick.

Consensus: Hibbert’s game has improved leaps and bounds since he stepped onto the Georgetown campus, culminating in his strong performance in the 2007 NCAA tournament. In hindsight he should have entered the draft last year, as his stock has dropped since that time. The fact that his game didn’t improve by leaps and bounds his senior year – it pretty much hit a plateau – has hurt his stock. While he doesn’t project to be another Ewing, Mourning or Mutombo, he should still be a solid pro.

Understand that my NCAA Tourney picks have been brutal.. so if you plan on betting, its probably best to do the opposite of what I say. With that out of the way, I'm going with favored Georgetown this afternoon (straight up & against the spread). Unlike Gonzaga, the Hoyas will control the game at their own tempo. Unlike Gonzaga, Georgetown is a very good defensive team. And unlike Gonzaga, Georgetown doesn't have the consistent inability to close out games.

Prediction: Georgetown

Butler (7) vs Tennessee (2)

My gut tells me that Tennessee is slightly overrated and that not only will Bulter cover the 4.5 point spread, but that the Bulldogs will flat out win the game. But my realist side says that Tennessee is better than they looked against American when Chris Lofton only hit one shot.. and that Butler isn't as dominant as they looked against South Alabama when Pete Campbell hit 8 threes. For Butler, the real key isn't what you'd think, bombing away from three, but whether or not Matt Howard can hold his own against the Vols physical front line. This game should be close, but I favor Tennessee straight up but Butler in Vegas.

Siena (13) vs Villanova (12)

My predictions have been brutal this postseason.. but I did predict Villanova would make the Sweet Sixteen. So I'm picking them here solely for personal satisfaction.. Regardless of that though, the Cats are capable of being a great team on a good day. And unlike anyone Vandy has, Scottie Reynolds is a true go-to clutch guard that won't get down even if Nova falls to an early deficit.

Friday Night Championship Week & Bracketology Update

A Friday night update on all things Championship Week with an eye on the bracket.. - Miami, the Ohio version, almost caused havoc by knocking Kent State out of the MAC tournament. But the Golden Flashes managed to pull of a 49-47 win, ensuring that at least for another day the MAC is a one bid league. - I've said this many times.. but its too bad Dominic James has never learned how to hit a jump shot. The Golden Eagles made a nice comeback to make a game of it against Pitt, but ultimately Marquette couldn't hit shots. Outside of Jerel McNeal, the rest of the team shot a dismal 25% (12 of 48) - SFA was supposed to be the class of the Southland, but their solid season came to a close tonight. The Demons of Northwestern State came back from a big halftime deficit to advance to the conference finals. SFA came into today with an RPI of 57 and will hope to do some damage in the NIT. - Speaking of damage (never a good segue..), the SEC semifinal matchup between Georgia & Kentucky has been postponed. Unless a team plays twice tomorrow, I'm not sure what's going to happen there. - One guy who wouldn't mind doing some damage to Kentucky is Tubby Smith. His Gophers upset Indiana in the Big Ten quarters and now face fellow surprise Illinois tomorrow afternoon. You have to figure Minnesota is the favorite to advance to the finals.. and there's no reason not to think they'd give Wisconsin or MSU a game. Taking Minnesota to the Big Dance would be an amazing accomplishment for the first-year coach. (It would also be an embarrassment to a league that most likely wont get a team past the Sweet Sixteen). - I'm usually a big ACC proponent, but man has that league's tournament been boring. - Tulsa's good run continued, beating UTEP in OT a day after knocking off UAB in OT as well. In their last 12 games, Tulsa is 10-2, only losing to Memphis and UAB. The Golden Hurricane (seems like a lot of Golden nicknames in action today) face Memphis tomorrow.. and though they won't win, it might be closer than you'd expect. - A day after scoring 0 points, Roy Hibbert came through with his best statistical game of the season.. 25 points and 13 boards against West Virginia. On the flip side, Joe Alexander's tear came to an abrupt end with just 12 points on 5-16 shooting. - Congrats to Saint Joseph's for being a rare bubble team that actually won some games down the stretch. Beating Xavier (rather easily too) should probably lock up a Tournament bid. But then again, if Temple won the title tomorrow.. the committee might shy away from giving the A10 3 bids. - American worked their way into the tournament, beating Colgate in a hard fought game. I thought the Raiders played every bit as well, but home court was the deciding factor here. - If anybody suggests to me that Va Tech should be in the NCAA Tournament, I'll slap them in the face. If they beat UNC tomorrow.. then that's a different story. But as of now, this is still the same team to me that struggled to put away Liberty at home..

Arizona State (19-11) at USC (20-10)

It's put up or shut up time for Arizona State. The Sun Devils are hanging around everyone's bubble despite a weak RPI in the 70's and a .500 conference record. Today's game against the Trojans could make or break their Tournament hopes. These teams split their season series, but the Trojans handed it to them at the Galen Center. This game isn't technically a home game for USC, but its in LA, which is enough of an advantage to favor Mayo and crew.

Prediction: USC

Villanova (20-10 vs #9 Georgetown (25-4)

Was yesterday's win over Syracuse enough for the Wildcats to be in the Field of 65? I'm not so sure. At the very least, they need to put in a primo effort against the Big East regular season champs. The last time these two teams met, the final result was obviously highly controversial.. as a a ridiculous foul was called with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. Can Nova get revenge? The short answer is no.

Prediction: Georgetown

Arizona (19-13) vs #11 Stanford (24-6)

Everyone seems fairly certain that Arizona is in the field as of now.. but its by no means a lock.. and I think people are overstating their chances. After all they've won just 4 times in their last 11 games.. and 2 of those wins are against Oregon State. basically, that means they're 2-9 against actual D1 teams in recent weeks. Even though Stanford did win the previous meetings, they were very close.. and tonight, you have to figure Arizona will be playing with more fire.
