The Starting Fives: ACC

Unlike the NBA, where most starting lineups are set in stone weeks before the season, NCAA starting fives are highly unsettled and constantly in flux. Going through the BCS leagues this week, I'll be projecting the starting fives for each team. Also included is the team's most important bench option, and some notes on other possible lineups.

In the case where a quality player is ineligible for the fall semester or suspended for the opening few games, I've still included them in the projections. These are really supposed to be projections of how lineups will look in February and March.

Next week, based on these lineups, I'll be throwing out statistical projections for major BCS contributors.

THE ACC

Boston College

Florida State

Arkansas transfer Cyrus McGowan could also take minutes from Graham. Edwin Rios will be the backup point guard, while freshman swing-man DeQuan Jones should also see 15-20 mpg.

Notes: This seems to be the consensus starting five that everyone expects. Virginia Tech

Wake Forest

Notes: Wake is getting a lot of hype due to its freshmen, but the returning players aren't bad either. Harvey Hale will join Williams as the two main guards/wings off the bench. Front-court minutes are up for grabs. Besides newcomers Ty Walker and Tony Woods fighting for the backup center role, you also have PF Jamie Skeen who would start for most teams. Junior big David Weaver might be the odd man out.

State of '08: Florida

Duke or Carolina? BC or UMASS? Gonzaga or Washington.. or Washington State? What is the best program in each state? While there's not much competition in Hawaii.. there are great debates to be had in loaded regions like California, North Carolina, and Texas. The State of '08 is a ranking of every program in every state.. based mostly on recent success (the last five years) mixed in with subjective factors such as conference prestige, historical success, and overall program direction.

FLORIDA

FLORIDA - Obvious choice at the top of the Sunshine state. Before last year, Billy Donovan's Gators had made 9 NCAA Tournaments in a row.. including back to back national titles. Hart to top that.

MIAMI - Since Frank Haith took over four years ago, Miami has made two NIT trips and one NCAA Tournament. But in the five years before last, Miami hadn't reached the Top 60 in RPI, and they've still never finished above .500 in the ACC. Fans are certainly expecting a big ACC finish this time around.

FLORIDA STATE - The 'Noles perpetually seem to be on the verge of something big, but they can't seem to get over the hump. This is basically the story of Leonard Hamilton's career. In the last six years, FSU has hovered between 41 and 81 in the RPI five times.. but have yet to reach the Big Dance.

CENTRAL FLORIDA - Despite lacking the profile of a Miami or FSU, UCF is a consistently solid team that deserves more attention. Long time coach Kirk Speraw has led the Knights to four NCAA Tournaments, and helped them make the transition to the more competitive Conference USA. Since joining the CUSA before 2006, the Knights have finished .500 or better in league play each season.

SOUTH FLORIDA - The Bulls haven't had much success since joining the Big East, but the program does seem to be gaining momentum. Last year, USF beat three Top 60 teams including FSU, UAB, and Syracuse.

6. FLORIDA A&M - The Rattlers are always one of the better teams in the MEAC. In fact, 2001 was the last time FAMU finished below .500 in league play. Although the MEAC is the 2nd worst league in the country, the Rattlers have taken advantage of the weak competition by making the Tournament in 2004 & 2007.

7. FLORIDA ATLANTIC - After a shocking Tourney run in 2002, the Owls haven't sniffed postseason play. In fact, FAU has only won two SB tournament games in the past six seasons, though they've been competitive in the last three seasons. It will be interesting to see if new head coach Mike Jarvis can regain some his former glory, after his tenure at St. John's came to an embarrassing end.

8. JACKSONVILLE - The Dolphins are coming off one of their best campaigns in recent memory, finishing 2nd in the A-Sun, making it to the conference title game, and finishin with an RPI of 164. That's pretty heady stuff for a program that was 1-26 in 2006 (only managing to knock of UNF). This is the 2nd season in a row that JU led its Florida rivals (Stetson, FGCU, and UNF) in the A-Sun.

9. STETSON - The Mad Hatters have hovered around 250 in the RPI for the past couple years, but are coming off a decent campaign that included an 11-5 Atlantic Sun record. This is the second time Stetson has won 11 league games in the past three seasons.

10. FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL - FIU is consistently overmatched by its Sun Belt competition. The Panthers haven't finished above .500 in league play since 2000.. and really haven't come close since. At least things have improved since 03 & 04 when FIU was one of the worst teams in the country, winning just 10 D1 games those years.

11. BETHUNE-COOKMAN - The Wildcats continue to struggle, finishing 3rd to last in the lowly MEAC in back to back seasons. 2000 was probably the last time there was any legitimate hope of making a run in the conference tournament.

12. FLORIDA GULF COAST - In their first full D1 season, FGCU had decent success, winning 10 games, including 6 in the Atlantic Sun. At the very least, this already puts them ahead of North Florida.

13. NORTH FLORIDA - Despite a decent nickname (the Ospreys), UNF hasn't had even the slightest success since joining D1 in 05-06. UNF has won an amazingly small 7 D1 games in the past three seasons, and only beat winless NJIT in the RPI last year.

It may have been Good Friday for the rest of the world, but for college basketball fans it was a Great Friday. While Thursday’s opening round games had their moments, Friday’s slate of action was full of what makes the NCAA tournament great – upsets, nail biters, buzzer beaters & great individual performances.

Not surprisingly, Friday’s top performers dominate CHN’s All-First Round Team.

CollegeHoops.net First Round MOP: Stephen Curry, Davidson

40 points, five steals, 8-10 3pts

Could it really be anyone else? Dell’s little boy was on fire against Gonzaga, almost matching his teammates point for point (Curry – 40, rest of the Wildcats – 42). There are few NCAA players that can light it up like Curry can and as the ‘Zags found out, he can be deadly efficient (14-22 FGs, 4-6 FTs, 8-10 3pts). You think John Thompson and Georgetown are having nightmares about him yet? And to think, a wise CHN scribe mentioned that this might happen..

MOP Runner Up: Tyrone Brazelton, Western Kentucky

33 points, five assists, five rebounds, two steals, 6-10 3pts

Point guard Tyrone Brazelton seemed to be everywhere on the court for the Hilltoppers on Friday. In addition to scoring a career-high 33, he set up teammate Ty Rogers for the game-winning, buzzer-beating, desperation three-pointer in overtime. Western Kentucky will need more of Brazelton’s relentless attacking to get past San Diego and gain entry into the Sweet Sixteen.

McClinton’s 32 second half points matched opponent Saint Mary’s total. Enough said.

Killer stat line - the only thing missing was the W.

Forward: Sonny Weems, Arkansas - 31 points, five boards, two steals

At least Weems left some room for improvement – he did miss two of the 14 shots he took against Indiana.

Quick Midday Recap: Curry Explodes, Roger is Clutch, McClinton Dominates

A quick review of the morning action on Day Two of the NCAA Tournament: (10) Davidson 82 - (7) Gonzaga 76 The first big games of the first round that actually lived up to its hype. Stephen Curry scored 40 points, including an amazing 30 in the second half, to lead Davidson to the mini-upset. Gonzaga tried many times to run away with the game in the first thirty minutes, getting up 10 with just 13 minutes to go. But too much Curry and not enough clutch play down the stretch did in the Zags. As was the case all season, the Bulldogs simply lacked that one go-to player that could put them over the edge. Steven Gray had big moments early, Jeremy Pargo had big moments in the middle, but it was only Curry who had big moments in the end. (12) Western Kentucky 101 - (15) Drake 99 Drake's magical season came to an end due to an amazing game-winning three from Ty Rogers. Western Kentucky came out firing and was shooting close to 60% for the first 35 minutes of the game.. but down 74-59 with 8 minutes left, Drake finally found its long-range touch. Once in overtime, the Bulldogs had many chances to pull away but their lack of inside presence and ability to break guys down off the dribble was damning. There's really only so many times you can settle for 40 foot shots. Both teams made bonehead decision in the OT session, especially a foul by WKU's Boris Siakam. But Siakam made up for his wrongdoing by hitting a pair of clutch ft's with 21 seconds left. (7) Miami 78 - (10) Saint Mary's 64 Up 5 at half, things were looking good for Saint Mary's. But Jack McClinton's 32 point second half outburst (every bit as good as Stephen Curry's half) was more than enough to put away the Gaels. At various points in the second half, he scored 14 in a row for Miami, 10 in a row, and 8 in a row. (7) Butler 81 - (10) South Alabama 61 Like the above game in some sense, this was neck and neck for 15 minutes with South Alabama leading 23-22. But a three-point barrage by Pete Campbell and AJ Graves broke open the game and the Bulldogs never looked back. Campbell ended up with 26 points, including 8 of 10 from downtown. South Alabam scoring leader Demetric Bennett was held to just 6 points thanks to solid D by Drew Streicher. Butler now faces Georgetown in the 2nd round. (2) Tennessee 72 - (15) American 57 For 30 minutes the Eagles gave it a good run before the Vols talent and athleticism pulled away. Garrison Carr hit back to back threes midway through the second half to tie the game at 40. Tennessee then called a timeout, ran off 10 straight points and never looked back. Carr, who averaged 18 on the season, ended up with 26 of American's 57 points. Tennessee's Chris Lofton was just 1-7 from the floor, but JaJuan Smith and others picked up the slack. (2) Georgetown 66 - (15) UMBC 47 Nothing terribly exciting to note here. UMBC showed some heart, keeping the score relatively close for most of the game, but you never got the sense they really had the upset in them. (2) Texas 74 - (15) Austin Peay 54 This game was well over by the 10 minute mark with Texas leading 22-5. Whatever happened after that really didn't matter. (13) San Diego 70 - (4) UCONN 69 More on this game soon! Overall: Some fireworks by Stephen Curry and Jack McClinton, not to mention Pete Campbell's 8 of 10 shooting were the first real big individual efforts of the tournament. Ty Rogers clutch game-winning OT three was the first of what hopefully will be many buzzer-beaters over the next couple weeks.

Why They Can Surprise:

There is not much that is flashy about Miami’s style of play. Coach Frank Haith’s team will play solid defense and run an efficient offense. The defense does not start with big men Dwayne Collins, Jimmy Graham and Anthony King, but it usually does end in the paint. The Hurricanes will not go after steals, but once the ball gets inside, the frontcourt will swat it away. While nobody on their own is a prolific shot blocker, all three have the ability to find a block or two each game.

The efficient offense will play through the forwards. The team as a whole hits the three-balls pretty consistently, but they will rarely force up a shot. Just about any team can shoot as well as Miami from beyond the arc if they have the discipline to only take the shot when it is there. Jack McClinton, the Hurricanes leading scorer, will take a majority of the shots from long range. In fact, he will take a lot of shots period. James Dews is the second leading scorer and receiving some points from him is important so the defense cannot key in on McClinton.

Why They Can Disappoint:

Miami does not have a proven point guard who is ready to lead them through the tough times. Thus, the team commits more turnovers than they dish out assists. Lance Hurdle, a junior college transfer via UC Santa Barbara, is more of an undersized wing than a point guard. However, Hurdle has done a decent job keeping the turnovers down when he has run the point. The true point on the team is Eddie Rios. Rios, just a freshman, is still learning the ropes and only averages about 15 minutes per game. Obviously Miami has done relatively well with their current crop of players, but having a ball handler who can be a solid floor leader is even more important in March.

Who To Watch:

Collins and King will do a little scoring in the paint to open up the perimeter and McClinton and Dews will score a large bulk of the team’s points, but it is important that Miami has a third threat to put the ball in the basket after McClinton and Dews. Brian Asbury might be the answer. The 6-7 wing has started over half of the Hurricanes games, but he has no problem providing a spark off the bench either. Asbury can hit the outside shot, but he has nice mid-range game and can use his height to get to the basket when smaller guards are attempting to cover him. When Asbury scores, Miami has a dangerous group on the offensive end and that is why Miami is 12-3 when he reaches double digits in the scoring column.

Thursday's Mid-day Championship Week Update

A little mid-afternoon update on a busy Championship Week Thursday.

How do you spell done?

How do you spell done? U-A-B. The Blazers killed their slim tourney hopes by bowing out early in the CUSA tournament. Their resume doesn't really matter at this point as Mike Davis and co. will be a 3 or 4 seed in the NIT. Tulsa, quietly winners of 9 of 11, has a good chance to make it to the CUSA finals as they face Houston or UTEP next.

Break out the deoderant

Villanova will be sweating it out on Selection Sunday. After mercifully ending Syracuse's season, the Wildcats never really had a chance against Georgetown. The Hoyas looked fresh and focused, and are primed to make a Big East title run. Villanova meanwhile pretty much has to sit back and hope other bubble teams bow out as well.

Enough about OJ

Don't get me wrong, OJ Mayo's a great talent. But despite the fact the announcers talked about him for 40 straight minutes (over and over and over), he's not the second coming. He's just a really good talent that also has a lot of flaws.. particularly a tendency to make careless turnovers, take poor shots, and an ugly somewhat flawed release (which can be fixed). Anyways, he's good and was the difference in USC's win over Arizona State.

ASU trailed most of the game and could never mount that one big charge in the 2nd half. Now the Sun Devils just have to pray that they've done enough to impress the voters.. but unfortunately they probably haven't. 5-10 in your last 15 games simply won't cut it.. neither will a non-conference SOS of 304. Villanova, noted above for example, should get in instead.

Wacky A-10

St. Joseph's was somehow the 5 seed to Richmond's 4.. despite being a far superior team. Just one of the consequences of the league's highly lopsided schedule. The Hawks easily blew by the Spiders, and still have an outside chance of reaching the Dance. They match up well with Xavier, and a win in the semis would be their 5th Top 50 victory of the season. Xavier knocked out Dayton, whose bubble hopes have also burst. The Flyers had many chances to make a game of it down the stretch, but lack a true go-to player on offense. Brian Roberts is a nice player.. but he can't break down a defense and take over a game. They'll be a tough out in the NIT.

Locked and Loaded

West Virginia (especially) and Miami (most likely) locked up NCAA Tournament bids with wins today. Miami's win was a ho-hummer against disappointing NC State.. but a 22-9 record and a Top 30 RPI look good to me. WVU was probably in already as well, but now they're looking at a possible 7 seed after beating UCONN.

True to his name, Miami's Lance Hurdle looks like he's stepping over a hurdle or practicing some new age Karate in this shot. The Hurricanes beat Virginia on Saturday, their 5th win in 6 games. A tournament bid is certainly in reach.

The Bears senior is saving his best for last, as he had the game of his life with 37 points and 11 boards against Indiana State
