2008-09 All-American Projection: Post-Decision Update

A few days after the 2008 NCAA Championship game, I made an early projection of the 08-09 All-Americans to go along with Top 50 and All-Freshman projections. Now that players have officially entered or withdrawn from the Draft, we have a much better sense of how next year's landscape will look: First Team G - Brandon Jennings - Arizona G - Stephen Curry - Davidson F - Kyle Singler - Duke** F - Luke Harangody - Notre Dame F - Tyler Hansbrough - North Carolina ** Originally, I had slated DJ Augustin into the All-American team. He's been replaced by Singler, who could be a major breakout candidate despite Duke's balanced attack. Second Team G - James Harden - Arizona State G - Darren Collison - UCLA** G - Tyrese Rice - Boston College F - Chase Budinger - Arizona** F - Jon Brockman - Washington ** I thought Collison would go pro, but he returns to form a solid backcourt with Jrue Holiday (though perhaps Holiday will end up stealing Collison's thunder..). Budinger always seems to disappoint, but now that he's back in school, its hard to imagine he wont score 20 ppg next year. Third Team G - AJ Price - UCONN G - Nick Calathes - Florida** G - Demar Derozan - USC** F - Blake Griffin - Oklahoma F - Patrick Patterson - Kentucky ** Trent Plaisted was an original Third Team member, but is now hoping to be a 2nd round pick in next week's Draft. Tyreke Evans was originally in Derozan's place, but the return of Antonio Anderson, Robert Dozier, etc to the Tigers make Evans less likely to put up huge numbers. Fourth Team G - Ty Lawson - UNC** G - Eric Maynor - VCU F - Tyler Smith - Tennessee** F - Terrence Williams - Louisville** C - AJ Ogilvy - Vanderbilt ** Williams was originally on the 2nd Team, but the return of Collison and Lawson knock him down a peg. Smith's return was huge for Tennessee, and he could end up as high as the First Team. Lawson's return was somewhat of a surprise, and he gets slotted into the Third team. Next in Line: Jrue Holiday - UCLA Dominic James - Marquette Hasheem Thabeet - UCONN BJ Mullens - Ohio State Tyreke Evans - Memphis Samardo Samuels - Louisville Looks like a lot of big men get squeezed into the "Next in Line" group. All-American voters are swayed by numbers, and forwards like Brockman and Patterson have a chance to light up the scoreboard in ways that a Thabeet never could.

Seven Day Stretch: Championship Week Review

The “Curse” bit Stanford, Valparaiso, Arizona and even me last week. That’s right; I was the victim of my own making. I went on a national radio show to talk a bit on the upcoming NCAA Tournament and when asked about which team I thought was “this year’s George Mason”, I talked about South Alabama. The Jaguars lost that very night on their home floor to put their NCAA status in serious doubt. Sorry, Jags…next time I’ll keep my mouth shut.

Seven Day Savior (Team): George Mason Patriots

Everybody’s darling of two years ago, (remember the Final Four run?), is back! Mason won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament by defeating William & Mary this past Monday night. The Patriots are going to be a scary opponent for whoever draws them in the Field of 65. They still have five players from that Final Four squad, including two, Will Thomas and Folarin Campbell, who played significant minutes on that 2006 team. That experience, coupled with the solid coaching of Jim Larranaga, makes Mason a solid choice for a “Cinderella” getting past the first round. What makes this story even more unlikely is that the Patriots were only the #3 seed in the conference tourney and this was the first time that that any of the Patriot players had won the conference tournament title. Even the Final Four team had to get an at-large bid on Selection Sunday.

Honorable Mention to Davidson as the Wildcats were able to complete a perfect conference season, both regular and tournament. Davidson will be a difficult opponent, too, as close losses to North Carolina, Duke and UCLA can attest.

Seven Day Savior (Player): Michael Jenkins, Winthrop Eagles

After the week he had in the Big South Tournament, how could anyone not pick the Eagle senior? Jenkins, who has dedicated this season and Winthrop’s to a teammate who was killed last year, led the Eagles in the first two games of the Big South Tourney and then exploded in the title game. In that game, against a UNC-Asheville team that had already swept the Eagles in the regular season, Jenkins score 20 of his team’s first 30 points and finished with 33. Jenkins is clearly one of those kids that is going to be a handful for any BCS conference team in the upcoming NCAAs. It’s not as if Jenkins is the only good player on the Winthrop squad. Coach Randy Peele can count on scoring from several of Jenkins’ teammates should a team decide to take Jenkins out of the game. Jenkins is unselfish, he’s a leader and he has the look of a young man who will do whatever it takes to win his next game.

News of the Week: The Return of Lute

It was announced earlier this week that Lute Olson will return to the sidelines for Arizona starting next season. This has some serious ramifications, not the least of which is the probable end of Kevin O’Neill’s short term as head coach. Olson’s return goes deeper than that, though. Over the past several seasons Olson’s Arizona squads had fallen closer and closer to mediocrity. Olson, who is a proponent of the motion offense and zone defenses, had been consistently outcoached by his Pac-10 Conference brethren and it was only the talent that Olson had on his roster that prevented a full collapse. The only way to change that is for Olson to come back reenergized and committed to getting Arizona to the top of the Pac-10, let alone the nation, again. While he can still do that, the reality is that Olson isn’t getting any younger, a fact that other pac-10 schools will undoubtedly point out to recruits. Olson had been making recruiting mistakes over the past several years in that he was only going after blue-chippers and those “glue guys” that every good team needs to make a deep run in March weren’t getting much playing time. There is nothing that indicates that Olson will have changed his recruiting strategy.

Arizona had an opportunity to have Olson leave with dignity, and he still may. After all, a coach with his track record does deserve to leave on his own terms, but this is going to be a long-term problem for Arizona as Olson probably only has a few years left in him at best. With his return, Arizona will see the transfer in Pac-10 power, which is moving towards the California schools, become more pronounced, and it may take a long time for Arizona to fully catch up once Lute does call it a career.

Game of the Week (The one you DON’T know about): Miami v. Virginia Tech

In order for this game to take place in the ACC Tournament, Miami first needs to take care of North Carolina State. Assuming that happens, this game could be huge. Depending on how things break, the ACC could be looking at only four bids to the NCAA Tournament. If that’s the case, that means that Miami, Va Tech and Maryland are fighting for one berth. This could change, of course, if two of these three teams make a deep ACC run. However, a game between the Hurricanes and the Hokies could have serious implications for both teams’ postseason aspirations. Miami is actually in a better position to suffer a loss and still receive an NCAA bid. That’s because, even though the Hokies finished higher in the final ACC standings, they did so because they only had to face the “tough” teams, (Duke and UNC), once each. Virginia Tech needs this game badly. At a time when most bracketologists are talking about the “bubble” games coming up in the Pac-10 Tournament, none of those may be bigger than this potential match-up.

Seven Days Under the Radar: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame finished in third place in the Big East, arguably the toughest conference in the country, yet no one has really talked up their chances in the Big East Tournament. That’s because the Irish are much better in the friendly home confines of the Joyce Center than they are on the road. However, the Irish did win five conference road games, and while only the Villanova win stands out at all, Notre Dame has slowly been gaining confidence away from home. They have a very good “go-to” player in Luke Harangody and they can shoot from beyond the arc. The only thing that Coach Mike Brey has to be able to do is convince the Irish that every defensive stop they can get is important. If the Irish play decent defense then they very well could be playing for the conference title on Saturday.

Seven Days on the Hot Seat: Sidney Lowe, North Carolina State

Lowe is only finishing his second season in Raleigh but this year has been a disaster as far as Wolfpack fans are concerned. Lowe took over a program that was becoming the consistent third power in the ACC behind UNC and Duke. However, fans thought that Lowe’s predecessor, Herb Sendek didn’t win enough and they didn’t like his methodical offensive system. When the head coaching position opened NC State took a run at several higher profile candidates, (like Steve Lavin), but ended up “settling” on Lowe. When I say “settling”, I mean that Lowe was clearly not NC State’s first choice. That being the case Lowe could have thought of himself as keeping the seat warm until someone else was ready. In other words, because he wasn’t the first choice, and in spite of his NBA coaching pedigree Lowe has a much shorter leash when it comes to rebuilding. But that’s Lowe’s problem; he shouldn’t be rebuilding. Most observers felt that NC State should at least be an NCAA Tourney team this season. One thing’s for sure, there isn’t anyone who pegged the Wolfpack for anywhere near last place and that’s exactly where they stand. Lowe will get some slack because he lost point guard Farnold Degand in late December to an ACL tear. Losing your point guard isn’t a good thing, especially when his only back-up is a true freshman. That was Lowe’s predicament heading into the New Year. However, that doesn’t explain the coaching blunders and the complete meltdown competitively by the Pack over the last three weeks. This doesn’t sit well in Raleigh. Lowe won’t lose his job at the end of this season, but anything less than a top three finish in the ACC next year will mean a pink slip.

Seven Days of Head Scratching: The “Curse”

I’ve made a great deal of “hay” about the “curse” that I “created” when I started the SDS column back in January. In all honesty, I have never really believed in it or any other real superstitious thing. I simply thought it was a fun thing to add to the column. However, except for one week, every team that I’ve either given the Seven Day Savior award to, either the team award or to a player on that team, has lost the following week. This has included small schools, like UNC-Asheville, which went on a three game losing streak the week of their selection as the Savior of the week, and big schools, like Stanford, which I selected as my Seven days Under the Radar team last week. The Cardinal proceeded to go out and lose two straight games in Los Angeles to close out their Pac-10 regular season. Because of these odd happenings, I am now really beginning to believe in the curse. Look let’s face it, I have people holding candle-light vigils now on the quads of their favorite school pleading with the powers-that-be in an attempt to prevent me from putting them in the dreaded Seven Day Stretch. I was thinking that once the brackets for the Big Dance come out, that I’ll write a supplemental SDS mentioning all the possible teams that my favorite team might face…that way I can do my part to help my school win a national title.

You know what I’ve really figured out over the years? There are people who really think like this. I also figured out that I take myself way too seriously sometimes. Everybody have a great weekend of college hoops, (really, is there any other kind?), and get ready to go dancing.

Man, I love my job!

Why They Can Surprise:

A year ago Notre Dame’s two superstars were barely playing. Luke Harangody was a green freshman who saw most of his minutes off the bench and Kyle McAlarney was temporarily off the team. This year, they might just be the best inside-outside combination in the Big East.

Harangody averages 20.5 points and 10.4 rebounds. Any time the 6-8 sophomore does not get a double-double it is a surprise. He will use his large 251 pound frame to dominate the paint game in and game out. However, Harangody had one of his worst performances of the year against Georgetown and 7-2 center Roy Hibbert, so he can be off his game against much taller opponents, but he will not run into anybody else like Hibbert this year. McAlarney returned to the Irish and almost immediately picked up his game. The guard is a superb shooter from long range and averages over three triples per game. When his shot is falling, Notre Dame is tough to beat.

Why They Can Disappoint:

Despite the bevy of talented frontcourt players who generally stick to the easy shots, Notre Dame does not shoot that well from the field. Some of that is due to Coach Mike Brey running an uptempo style, but this is still a team that feeds the big men and should shoot better than 45 percent from the floor. It is not any individuals fault, as every significant player on the team shoots at least 40 percent, but nobody shoots over 50 percent either. Some of the other forwards like Luke Zeller and Rob Kurz will supplement their interior game with the occasional outside shot, so that brings down their field-goal percentage.

Who To Watch:

If McAlarney is not scoring, the Irish have trouble replacing his production. In all of Notre Dame’s losses, McAlarney has scored 12 or fewer points. Kurz tends to step up when McAlarney is having an off night shooting, but the team really needs a guard to do the same. There are a couple options in Tory Jackson and Ryan Ayers. Jackson has some bad shooting numbers from beyond the arc, but the pesky defender has started to find his stroke late in the season. Ryan Ayers, a 6-8 wing, was relegated to the bench midway through the season in favor of rebounding threat Zach Hillesland. Since his move to the bench, Ayers has been shooting better, but has yet to become a viable third scoring option.

Welser Wonders: Clock Issues, Indiana's Future, Bracket Busters..

It’s been a fun week in the world of college basketball. The bubble keeps expanding and contracting, Indiana is in trouble and BracketBusters is nearly upon us. This week, that and more is what “Welser Wonders…”

…who will be the next coach at Indiana?
After Coach Kelvin Sampson’s recent troubles, which I am going to call the Teapot Phone scandal instead of the overused –gate suffix, the search for a new head coach at IU could very well begin this week. (Ed: Sources suggest Sampson has in fact been fired today). Two predecessors removed from the giant shadow of Coach Bob Knight, the school should pretty much have their pick of the litter.

There really aren’t any quality IU guys available that weren’t passed over last time so it looks like the Hoosiers should go in a different direction. Some names being thrown out, by which I mean totally randomly suggestions, are Tony Bennett, Scott Skiles, Mark Turgeon, Gregg Marshall, Mark Few, Mark Fox, Dane Fife, Isaiah Thomas and RMK himself, among a slew of others. We can knock out a few of those very easily. The last two are more for humor than anything else, so we can take those two off the list. Fife is too young, so we’ll keep him in mind in five years and Few probably would be wise to see what has happened to others (Dan Monson) who have gone from Gonzaga to the Big Ten. It is a different situation, but still Few has the most established program of any guy on that list…and that includes the Knicks. Current IU assistant Dan Dakich would be the likely candidate to take over for the rest of the season if Coach Sampson is terminated right now, but after nine so-so years at Bowling Green, hiring him full time could end up to be a mistake of Bobby Williams like proportions.

Tony Bennett might be the most interesting choice. The guy is a Midwesterner who coached with his dad at Wisconsin and played at Wisconsin Green Bay. Coming back to Big Ten country to lead his own team would probably be an offer he couldn’t refuse. The knock on Bennett could be that he is using his father’s players at Washington State, but the younger Bennett had plenty to do with building that success in the northwest. If I was the new AD at IU, that would be my top pick.

…why it is so difficult to make two clocks work?
Is it just me or are game clock and shot clock malfunctions up drastically this year? I’m not just talking about human error. That happens and is understandable. I’m talking about the technology of something clicking down every second. It seems like on any given Saturday, five of 50 televised games have some sort of clock failure. Football might not have to deal with tenths of a second like basketball does, but they seem to have far fewer technical problems. In football the clock just runs down a little too far so they reset it. In basketball, the stupid thing won’t work.

I have no point or solution, but Archimedes would be disappointed with what we’ve done over the last 2000 and some odd years.

…whether Notre Dame deserves a lot of respect?
Throughout November and December nobody really paid much attention to the Irish. The non-conference schedule was pretty weak besides a victory over Kansas State that looks a lot better now than it did in early December. Since then ND has garnered an impressive 9-3 record in the Big East, with the losses coming at Marquette, at Georgetown and at Connecticut.

What Coach Mike Brey’s squad lacks is a big road victory (Villanova doesn’t count anymore). If they had one, the Irish would be getting a ton of buzz right now as a team that could make an Elite Eight type of run come March. There is only one opportunity left for Notre Dame to make that big statement when they travel to Louisville the last day of February.

…who will make a statement on BracketBusters weekend?
Drake and Butler are the top two teams in the field and will square off Saturday evening. Drake is probably in the more interesting position. There is a ton of doubt surrounding the team due to a weak non-conference schedule and what many perceive as a down year for the Missouri Valley Conference. Can the Bulldogs (that’s the Drake Bulldogs, not the Butler Bulldogs) pull off a victory on the road over a top ten team? If they do, the Drake bandwagon will be a lot bigger.

Meanwhile, Butler is looking to hold onto a top four seed in the NCAA Tournament and a whole lot of people will have them slated to at least reach the Sweet Sixteen if that is the case. Drake has yet to earn that respect and unless they can beat Butler, most brackets will be screaming for a first round upset for the Bulldogs from Des Moines.

Guard – Draelon Burns – DePaul – SR

Best game – Dec 12^th – Vanderbilt – 24 points, 7 boards, 4 assists

The Blue Demons may have had a bad December (2 wins, 5 losses), but senior guard Burns had a great one – he topped the 20-point mark four times, including against nationally ranked Vandy and Clemson.

Guard – Scottie Reynolds – Villanova – SO

Best game – Dec 9^th – Temple – 27 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals

It was a very successful December for ‘Nova, as they reeled off six straights wins to complete a perfect month. Reynolds led the way, averaging about 18 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Freshman Jones was on fire for the Bulls in December. He followed up back-to-back 30-point efforts with a 25-point game, and ended up averaging for the month about 20 points, six rebounds, five dimes and three steals per game.

Best game – Dec 22^nd – USF – 23 points, 10 boards, 2 steals

Notre Dame has been a pleasant surprise this year and the bruising Harangody is a large reason why – he put up three straight double-doubles during the Irish’s undefeated December.

Best game – Dec 20^th – Duke – 15 points, 20 boards, 5 blocks

Freshman Blair had a monstrous December, averaging around 14 points, 12 boards, two steals and three blocks a game. With the injuries mounting for the Panthers, Blair will have to keep up his pace.
