Daily Dribble: Big Ten Top 25 Players

Following the ACC
Top 25 Players earlier in the week, I move to the Midwest to take on the Big
Ten. Outside the top handful of players, the talent is not comparable to the
other BCS leagues. Still, there's new talent at Purdue, Ohio State, and
elsewhere that could push some of these mediocre veterans off the list by
season's end.

Big Ten Top
25 Players

1. Drew Neitzel,
G, Michigan State - The best player on what will be the league's best team
(sorry Indiana)

2. DJ White,
PF, Indiana - He's been a man amongst boys for a couple years now

3. Eric Gordon,
SG, Indiana - Gordon's ready to light it up, perhaps for his only go-around

4. Shaun
Pruitt, C, Illinois - Big man improves substantially every year

5. Geary
Claxton, SF, Penn State - Claxton's solid, but he shouldn't be this high in a
BCS league

6. Raymar Morgan,
SF, Michigan State - Emerging star is key to MSU's attack

7. Jamar Butler,
PG, Ohio Sttae - The Buckeyes might ask too much out of Butler this year

8. Lawrence
McKenzie, SG, Minnesota - Tubby needs him to be the man day in and day out

9. Jamelle Cornley,
PF, Penn State - Despite being banged up, still put up 14 and 7

10. Othello
Hunter, PF, Ohio State - After being a reserve, ready to emerge from the shadows

11. Mike Flowers,
PG, Wisconsin - Solid decision-maker and defender

12. David Lighty,
G/F, Ohio State - Yes, Ohio State actually has a sophomore returning

13. E'Twaun Moore,
G, Purdue - Top Purdue recruit is the real deal

14. Kevin Coble,
PF, Northwestern - Solid scorer, can play all three positions up front

15. Travis Walton,
PG, Michigan State - Most APG out of returning Big Ten players

16. Kosta Koufos,
C, Ohio State - Heralded 7-footer is a future star, but it might take some time

17. Dan Coleman,
F, Minnesota - Coleman is solid, but not as good as the numbers show

18. Ekpe Udoh,
F/C, Michigan - Should be the force in the paint that Beliein needs

19. Goran Suton,
C, Michigan State - Despite size, can step out and hit jumper

20. Armon Bassett,
G, Indiana - Minutes might be limited by incoming Hoosier guards

21. Marquise Gray,

22. Manny Harris,
PG, Michigan - Quality freshman could be this year's most overlooked player

23. Brian Butch,

Joe Krabbenhoft,
PF, Wisconsin - Rare big time player out of South Dakota

Daily Dribble: Top 25 Players in the ACC

This is the first of a new series ranking the Top 25 players from the Major Conferences. After the BCS conferences are through, I'll be moving on to the Top 10 from the 2nd tier leagues.

Up first is the ACC, which is loaded with talent. I've already finished the Big Ten ranking and the disparity between these two leagues is pretty amazing.

Feel free to disagree with my selections.. there's certainly many different ways this ranking could go.

- ACC Top 25 Players -

1. Tyler Hansbrough, PF, UNC - Maybe not the best, but the most valuable player in college basketball

2. Sean Singletary, PG, Virginia - Scoring machine is a member of CHN's 1st Team All-America

3. Tyrese Rice, PG, Boston College - Ready to burst onto the national media scene

4. Ty Lawson, PG, UNC - Speedy point guard will only get better in second go-around

5. Brandon Costner, PF, NC State - This do-everything forward can shoot and pass

6. James Gist, PF, Maryland - Senior is on the verge of becoming a monster
7. Gavin Grant, SF, NC State - Versatile guard can even handle the point
8. Wayne Ellington, SG, UNC - Natural talent should boost scoring average to at least 15+
9. James Mays, PF, Clemson - Gives Clemson a rock solid presence in the paint
10. KC Rivers, SG, Clemson - Ready to contend for All-ACC honors
11. Toney Douglas, PG, FSU - Noles collapsed without Douglas in the lineup
12. Ben McCauley, PF, NC State - Can't argue with 14, 7, and 3 per game
13. DeMarcus Nelson, SG, Duke - Senior veteran always comes to play
14. Greg Paulus, PG, Duke - Found scoring touch in the last year's second half
15. Anthony King, C, Miami - Will contend for rebounding title after returning from injury
16. Greivis Vasquez, PG, Maryland - Sophomore guard gives Maryland dynamic presence
17. Deron Washington, SF, Virginia Tech - Becoming more than just an exciting finisher
18. Deon Thompson, PF, UNC - With Wright in the NBA, its Thompson's turn to score down low
19. Kyle Singler, SF, Duke - Freshman should step right in and average at least double-digits
20. Jon Scheyer, SG, Duke - By next year, long-range shooter could jump 10 spots on this list
21. Cliff Hammonds, G, Clemson - Solid senior can play both guard positions
22. Tyrelle Blair, C, Boston College - Makes list because of shot-blocking presence
23. Ishmael Smith, PG, Wake Forest - Assists are nice, but needs to improve all-around game
24. Trevor Booker, C, Clemson - Surprising soph must show more consistency and polish
25. Jack McClinton, SG, Miami - Can score, and score in bunches

Next in Line
Lewis Clinch, SG, Georgia Tech - Scoring wing could easily move onto top 25
JJ Hickson, F, NC State - Freshman gives State a powerful presence down low
Jeremis Smith, F, Georgia Tech - Consistent veteran will have to fight for minutes
Demontez Stitt, G, Clemson - His PG skills could put Clemson over the top
Isaiah Swann, G, FSU - Explosive wing still should be better

Big South Preseason All-Conference Team

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – High Point University senior Arizona Reid (Gaffney, S.C.) has been voted the Big South Conference 2007-08 Preseason Men’s Basketball Player of the Year by the League’s Head Coaches, Sports Information Directors and media panel, it was announced today at the Conference’s annual Basketball Tip-Off Media Luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Concord, N.C. This year’s preseason All-Conference team features four players who were named to the League’s All-Freshman team in 2004-05.

Reid was the Conference’s Player of the Year in 2006-07, after leading the Big South in rebounding (9.5 per game) and finishing second in scoring (21.0) – the first player in League history to average 20 points and nine rebounds in one season. He was an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press last season and received All-District honors from the USBWA and the NABC. Reid also was fourth in the Big South in field goal percentage (.509), 10th in free throw percentage, tied for 13th in blocks per game, fourth in offensive rebounds and first in defensive rebounds. In League play last year, Reid increased his totals to 26.0 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. He also scored in double figures in 29 games, including 19 straight, surpassed the 20-point mark 19 times with five 30-point outings, and brought down a Big South single-game record 25 rebounds against VMI in late February. Reid received 21 first-place votes and finished with 134 points in the voting to earn a spot on the preseason All-Conference team.

2007-08 Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team

Arizona Reid, High Point, Sr., F
Reggie Williams, VMI, Sr., F
Michael Jenkins, Winthrop, Sr., G
Jack Leasure, Coastal Carolina, Sr., G
Chris Gaynor, Winthrop, Sr., G

Williams, who received six first-place votes and 106 total points, became the first player in Big South history to lead the nation in scoring last year with his League-record 28.1 points per game average. He was named NABC All-District 4 second-team, ranked in the top four in the Conference in points (1st), rebounding (4th), field goal percentage (3rd) and assists (3rd), and also ranked ninth in free throw percentage and 10th in steals. Williams set new Big South and VMI records for most points in a season (928), became the first player in Conference history to log three 40-point games in a career and topped 40+ points in four games last season. He had nine double-doubles, scored in double figures in 31 games last season and had 15 30-point games. Williams needs just 351 points to become the Big South’s all-time leading scorer.

Jenkins enjoyed a breakout season last year for the Eagles as he earned First-team All-Conference honors as well as All-Tournament team accolades in his first year as a starter. He developed into one of the team’s top scoring threats as well as being a defensive stopper on the perimeter. He led Winthrop in scoring with 14.8 points per game and surpassed every single season individual career best last year. Jenkins led the Big South in three-point shooting percentage (41.5 percent), scored in double figures 27 times and tied a school and Big South record for three-pointers in a game with 12 vs. North Greenville. He led the Eagles to a 77-66 win over Missouri State in the ESPNU BracketBusters with his 25-point performance and seven 3-pointers, and posted seven rebounds and 11 assists in Winthrop’s 74-64 NCAA Tournament win over Notre Dame.

Leasure has been a Conference honoree all three seasons at Coastal Carolina – All-Freshman in 2005, First-team All-Conference and Player of the Year in 2006 and Second-team All-Conference in 2007. He led CCU to its second .500-or-better season last year for the first time since 1993-94, and became just the 14th player in CCU history to reach 1,000 points in his career (currently at 1,424). Leasure enters his senior year third all-time in Big South history with 300 career three-pointers. In 2006-07, he led Coastal and ranked seventh in the League at 15.6 points per game. He also ranked in the top 10 in the Conference in three pointers (3.0 pg), three-point field goal percentage (.372), assists (3.6 pg) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). He scored in double-figures in 12-of-14 League games last year and 25-of-30 games overall.

Gaynor was named Collegeinsider.com’s National Mid-Major Most Valuable Player in 2006-07 after helping the Eagles to a 29-5 overall record, 14-0 Big South mark and NCAA Tournament first round win. He has started all 95 games of his career at Winthrop (out of 98) and has been the Eagles’ floor general since his freshman season. He ranked first in the Big South last year in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.16) and was fourth in assists (4.39), while adding eight points a game. Gaynor saw his career games started streak end due to an injury in early December, but he still led the squad with 46 steals and ranked among the Conference leaders in the steals category. He scored a career-high 19 points vs. Liberty on Feb. 6 to help fuel a 80-76 come-from-behind win. He enters his senior season in fourth-place on the Winthrop all-time assist list with 427.

NEC Coaches Poll & All-Conference

Somerset, NJ -- Led by three returning starters, including a preseason all-NEC pick, defending tournament champion Monmouth has been tabbed as the 2006-07 NEC men’s basketball preseason favorite, according to a vote of the league’s head coaches. The preseason rankings, along with the league’s preseason all-conference team, were announced during a media teleconference with coaches this afternoon as a prelude to the NEC’s 26th season.

Looking to become the first league team since Rider in 1993 and 1994 to repeat as NEC champion, Monmouth earned six first place votes from league head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team. The Hawks narrowly edged out Robert Morris, which received the remaining five first place votes. With all five starters back, Long Island was chosen third, followed by Central Connecticut State and Quinnipiac tied for fourth. Wagner was picked sixth, while defending NEC regular season champion Fairleigh Dickinson landed in seventh. Rounding out the poll were St. Francis (NY) in eighth, followed in order by Sacred Heart, Mount St. Mary’s and Saint Francis (PA).

This year marks the eighth time that Monmouth has been selected the NEC’s preseason favorite by league head coaches, the most in conference history by a wide margin. Of the seven previous occasions in which Monmouth was picked first, the only one that resulted in an NEC title came in 1996 when the Hawks defeated preseason co-favorite Rider, 60-59.

Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll

Defending national champion Florida was a near-unanimous pick for the top spot in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, earning 30-of-31 first-place votes. North Carolina is second, followed by Kansas. Ohio State is fourth and received the remaining first-place vote. Pittsburgh and UCLA are tied for fifth, while LSU, Georgetown, Wisconsin and Arizona round out the rest of the top-10.

Creighton, the lone MVC team, is sandwiched between a pair of Southeastern Conference schools in the poll. Kentucky is No. 22 with 119 points in the voting, Creighton is No. 23 with 113 points, and Tennessee No. 24 with 106 points. Another mid-major, Nevada rounds out the poll with 101 points and a No. 25 ranking.

A spot in the top 25 of the preseason poll is no guarantee of success. Five of last year's preseason top-25 missed out on the NCAA Tournament. In fact, then-No. 18 UCLA was the only team in last year's preseason top-25 to eventually reach the Final Four. Florida, which on to win it all, received the same number of votes in last year's preseason poll as Northern Iowa (7), which was tied for 39th at the time.
