Siegel Quality Ranking: December Update

Last year I unveiled the Siegel Quality Ranking. The concept is simple: College basketball scheduling is so amazingly uneven, that pure records mean nothing. The only wins that should count in determining a team's stature are "quality" wins against "quality" opponents, and losses should only hurt if they're against bad teams.

A "quality" game is one of three things: A home game against a Top 50 RPI team, a Neutral game against a Top 100 team, and a Road win against a Top 150 team. Such wins are hard to come by and only the real NCAA Tournament contenders are able to win many.

Wins in such "quality" games count as 1 point. The more points the better obviously. Losses in "quality" games count as -0.5. However, losses in "non-quality" games count as a full -1 point. These are considered "bad" losses. These "bad" losses are pretty rare for quality teams.

Siegel Quality Ranking: December Update

All 48 teams that received a vote in the AP or Coaches Polls are included in this first update.

Quality Wins = Top 50 Home, Top 100 Neutral, Top 150 Road = 1 point
Loss in Quality game = -.5 point.
Loss in non-Quality game = -1

Record in quality games listed first, followed by bad losses (if any), then the total score. Ties are broken by giving the advantage to the team with the most quality wins. In case of a further tie in win-total, the advantage then goes to the team with the best quality winning percentage.

47. Illinois
0-3 = -1.5

48. Davidson
0-5 = -2.5

Thoughts: Like the RPI itself, which takes time to really take shape as a meaningful tool, so does the Quality Ranking. With that said, we're already beginning to see overrated teams that have no business getting votes. Particularly down at the bottom, teams like Illinois and Davidson are mere pretenders. Interestingly at the top, the A10 teams are proving to be for real with 3 quality wins apiece. The lone team to not even play a quality game is not surprisingly Clemson, which notoriously pads its schedule with easy wins. Pitt and Florida aren't far behind with just one decent game so far.

Obviously a lot of potential NCAA Tournament teams in here, perhaps everyone in
the Top 50 has a chance. The SEC is off to a very odd start, no one playing Top

the other leagues.
