Summer League Player Grades: Top Ten Picks

Yannis Koutroupis

Now the Las Vegas has come to a close we have
gotten our first look at the top ten picks of the 2008 draft against
other NBA players. Some disappointed, some excelled, and some did as we
expected. Summer league success/failure has never been a true indicator
of pro success, but it does give us an idea of what the player's
strengths and weaknesses are. With just one player on this list still
actively playing in the summer, here are the grades for how the top ten
picks played in their respective summer leagues:

Derrick Rose – Chicago Bulls
Noteworthy Performance: Nine points, eight assists against the Indiana Pacers
Grade: D
Review: Rose's performance in Orlando was not exactly
the start he wanted to his Bull career. At times Rose looked out of
control and despite having some legitimate weapons he never found his
comfort zone running the team. Towards the end of the Orlando Summer
League news broke that he had a mild case of right knee tendinitis
holding him back. If Rose didn't just get done dominating at Memphis a
few months ago there would be reason to be concerned in Chicago, but he
did and it's just two summer league games. Don't expect to see the same
Derrick Rose come the start of the regular season that you did in
Orlando.

Michael Beasley – Miami HEAT
Noteworthy Performance: 25 points, eight rebounds against the Orlando Magic.
Grade: B
Review: In his few games at Orlando Beasley showed the
exact same things he did at Kansas State last year: the ability to
create his own shot, a wide offensive arsenal, and solid rebounding
skills. The biggest issue that Beasley had at Orlando was efficiency.
Beasley shot 38% from the field largely due to poor shot selection.
Beasley had the freedom to do as he pleased offensively at the camp,
but that won't be the case once the regular season starts. Beasley did
show some very encouraging signs and with Shawn Marion on the block the
HEAT have to feel pretty content with what they got with the number two
pick.

O.J. Mayo – Memphis Grizzlies
Noteworthy Performance: 26 points, five rebounds against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Grade: B-
Review: Like Michael Beasley, you came away saying the
same things about Mayo after summer league that you did after his
freshman year. Mayo is adept at scoring the basketball,
but his shot selection is questionable, and he turns the ball over at
an extremely high rate. Considering that he spent a lot of time playing
with a true point guard in the backcourt with him you would have hoped
Mayo shot the ball better and turned it over less. Still, his overall
talent was on full display and Mayo made people's jaws drop with plays
like the 69-footer he nailed, or the vicious dunk he had over Hilton Armstrong. Mayo knows what areas he needs to work on, but it's obvious Memphis got a player.

Kevin Love – Minnesota Timberwolves
Noteworthy Performance: 18 points, 17 rebounds, two blocks against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Grade: A
Review: Reports that Kevin Love got in the best shape
of his life leading up to the NBA Draft were definitely not false. The
hard work that Love put in after the end of his college season
continued to pay off as he was one of the best player at Las Vegas.
Love treated every rebound like it was his and would let nothing get in
his way. Offensively he was extremely impressive as well, but it will
be his work on the glass that is really important alongside Al
Jefferson. Jefferson can provide the points, but what the Wolves really
need is consistent rebounding, and it appears they got it in Kevin
Love.

Russell Westbrook – Oklahoma City Thunder
Noteworthy Performance: 18 points, five rebounds, four assists against the Indiana Pacers
Grade: B-
Review: There were some questions about how well
Westbrook would play since this was his first time playing at the point
guard position exclusively. He looked like a seasoned point guard
though alongside Jeff Green and Kevin Durant. Westbrook handled the
point extremely well and looks ready to play the position full-time.
The only issue in Orlando was Westbrook's jump shot mechanics, which
need some work. Other than that Westbrook play really impressed the
Sonics, until they saw Jerryd Bayless earn MVP honors in Las Vegas. As
good as Westbrook may be, Bayless should have been the pick.

Danilo Gallinari – New York Knicks
Noteworthy Performance: 14 points, six rebounds, two assists against the Cleveland Cavaliers
Grade: B
Review: Due to lower back pain Gallinari played in
just one game at Las Vegas. In that one game it took him a half to get
a feel for the style, but after that he looked really good. He
showcased an impressive touch on his jumper and some very nice
ball-handling skills. It would have been really nice to see him go
against the better players in Vegas, but we'll just have to wait
another couple of months to get another glimpse of the Italian
sensation.

Eric Gordon – Los Angeles Clippers
Noteworthy Performance: 23 points, seven rebounds, two assists against the Dallas Mavericks.
Grade: B+
Review: Gordon played in just two games at Las Vegas
due to a strained hamstring, but that was all Clippers fans needed to
see. Gordon looked ready to contribute offensively right away. His jump
shot wasn't falling like it typically does, but Gordon can score in a
bunch of other ways. In the open court he was great, and he also got to
the line 10 times a game. Defensively he struggled to stay in front of
the quicker players. Gordon didn't just focus on offense either; he
rebounded, made plays for others, and caused turnovers on the other
side of the court. With Baron Davis as his mentor, sky is the limit for
Gordon.

Joe Alexander – Milwaukee Bucks
Noteworthy Performance: 10 points, seven rebounds, three blocks against the Denver Nuggets.
Grade: C-
Review: Alexander's play in Milwaukee was not stellar
to say the least. If anything he made the Bucks really happy that they
pulled off the Richard Jefferson trade, because he does not appear to
be ready. Alexander looked timid at times throughout Vegas and didn't
assert himself like he should have. Alexander looks a year away from
being able to handle the speed, physicality, and athleticism of the NBA
game. His rookie year looks like it will mainly be a learning
opportunity. Make to mistake about it though, he has the ability to
play this game and play it well - just not right now.

D.J. Augustin – Charlotte Bobcats
Noteworthy Performance: 30 points, six rebounds against the Golden State Warriors.
Grade: A-
Review: It's really tough being a true point guard on
a team with very little weapons, but that was Augustin's situation in
Las Vegas. Augustin made plays for others; they just weren't capable of
finishing. Four assists total in three games for a point guard of
Augustin's caliber gives you an idea of how much of a struggle it was
for his teammates. Augustin showed in his last game against the
Warriors though that he was capable of getting his own offense when he
needed to. Before the draft nine appeared to be too high to take
Augustin, but it's not looking that way anymore.

Brook Lopez – New Jersey Nets
Noteworthy Performance: 22 points, eight rebounds, three blocks against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Grade: B+
Review: Lopez had an awful debut for the Nets, but
after that first bad game he really looked like a steal for at 10. For
years now this team has been looking for someone who can score for them
inside the paint, and it looks like they finally found that player in
Brook. Lopez left the impression on everyone in Orlando that he is
ready to contribute offensively right now. Defensively he did average
nearly two blocks a game, but the rebounds weren't as high as you would
like. Rebounding has always been an area where Brook needs to improve,
but overall the Nets have to be extremely pleased with him. Lopez is
the only player on this list who is still playing, as the Nets are
participating in the Rocky Mountain Revue.

Outside of Joe Alexander and perhaps Danilo
Gallinari everyone on this list is going to see extensive minutes
during their rookie campaign. Michael Beasley, Brook Lopez, and Kevin
Love all looked like viable rookie of the year candidates. While the
three of them looked poised to have big years – don't expect the award
to go anywhere but to Portland for Jerryd Bayless or Greg Oden.

- Part Two Coming Soon!

Unsubstantiated Speculation: Today's NBA Draft Rumors

The draft
is finally upon us, which means the speculation will be swirling and may be a
little more substantiated as it has been the past four or five weeks. It’s kind
of strange to write a column leading up to an event that, within a span of three
hours, will disprove about 90 percent of what was written in this space. But,
the links are heating up and I am here to provide them. Expect everything below
to change before 7 p.m. tomorrow.

·
We’ll start at the
top of the draft, where it still appears that Portland will select Greg Oden.
John Canzano of The Oregonian thinks the Blazers are foolish for

pretending the decision is still up in the air. He’s got a point there. If
you already know who you are going to take, be decisive about it. Showing
wavering confidence in the No. 1 pick isn’t a great way to welcome him to your
team. Sam Smith of the Chicago Tribune is hearing that Blazers GM Kevin
Pritchard is in fact

split on who to pick in his look at the draft. There seems to be this
growing sentiment that Durant is the more surefire bet to be a star, but it’s
only coming from the media. It seems like those who spend time with him,

like Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express News, come away thinking it’s
his personality, not just his game, that will lead to stardom. Not sure if Greg
Oden has that yet, but if you look at guys like Jordan, Bird and Magic, they had
a mentality that spoke louder than ability. Maybe most people don’t know Durant
well enough to see that and maybe it’s just an unfounded feeling, but you get
the sense that those who have been around the game see something different about
this kid. Howard Beck of the New York Times is one such person, and he turns in

a great feature on Durant. The Times’ Liz Robbins has

a feature on Oden as well. Oh, and via Oden’s blog, he has

signed a deal with Nike, estimated worth at one gazillion dollars.

·
Before we get to
all the trade and pick stuff, allow me to direct you to an interesting article
by John Hollinger, ESPN.com’s senior mad scientist, who has some fancy pants

rating system for this year’s draft prospects. I won’t unwillingly cloud
your brain with the system’s principles but here are some highlights. Kevin
Durant is No. 1, and considered the best prospect of the past five years. Oden
is No. 2 for this draft. Nick Fazekas and Josh McRoberts are Nos. 7 and 8
respectively, scoring big in the “Defiance of Gravity” category. Corey Brewer is
No. 24. You can discover the rest of the carnage on your own.

·
There’s been a
million Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett trade scenarios but they don’t always
affect the draft so we won’t worry about them so much. It seems the teams that
are most likely to move around are the Celtics, the Bobcats, the Sixers and the
Hawks. Andy Katz

sat down with Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers of the Celtics, but seems no less
confused by their intentions. They worked out Nick Young and some other players
that are valued lower than No. 5,

so that could be an indication of a trade being in the works. But it could
also be an indication that Danny Ainge was bored and felt like watching some
guys shoot jumpers, so you never know.

·
The Bobcats seem

fairly intent on trading their pick. Although yesterday’s news that Gerald
Wallace will opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent could
change that. I’d imagine if Corey Brewer or Jeff Green were available, either
would be a good replacement. The Suns are trying to get in the lottery and one
scenario has

the Bobcats as a likely partner. Charlotte has No. 8 and No. 21, Phoenix has
No. 24 and No. 29. I’m not going to do the math.

·
Hawks beat
writer/GM in spirit Sekou Smith of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

exercises his right to a mock draft and has Atlanta taking Yi Jianlian, a
move that would probably cause riots. If you are into self-inflicted pain, read

interview with Hawks GM Billy Knight. There are rumors of a massive Garnett/Stoudemire/Hawks’
picks three-way deal but, as all other trade rumors inevitably are, they are
preliminary. A more likely situation has the

worked out Julian Wright and are trying to get Joakim Noah in for a last

worked out Al Thornton, a guy they would probably have a good chance to take

a big draft for the Sixers but shares the popular sentiment that

GM Billy King is bound to screw it up. Philly really wants a power forward
(and if they don’t get one, Shavlik Randolph will likely be a starter) so

David Aldridge takes a look at some guys the Sixers might try to move up and get,
using their three first-round picks (12, 21, 30). The Bobcats would be a likely
trading partner; rumors with the Bucks are flying around also.

One sign that the
Suns are actively trying to cut some salary to get into the lottery is their
latest workout. They

Some less
speculative links to dole out. Here’s

a nice feature on Yi Jianlian, pertaining to the large shadow cast over him
by Yao Ming.

·
Arron Afflalo was
a star in college for which next to nothing has been written about during this
draft process. Apparently he measured much bigger and taller than most people
expected and also performed well in athletic testing.

Here’s a nice feature, finally, on a guy who will probably be drafted way
too late.

·
On the opposite
end of the spectrum, a lot has been written of Joakim Noah. If you didn’t see
the segment on him for HBO’s Real Sports, it was outstanding and goes a long way
to tear down his brash public image. If you need some more,

here’s another feature.

·
And if you’re as
tired of reading workout stories as me, here’s one that is certainly unique.

“Very tall and very Romanian.”

That’s all for Unsubstantiated Speculation. There will
certainly be many more rumors leading up to the actual draft so this edition
couldn’t be as comprehensive as I had hoped. Bill Simmons and Chad Ford will do
a mock draft on ESPN.com that might provide a little more clarity and CHN will
have its share of content. This is truly my favorite event of the year because
it’s the one day where the NBA and college hoops share a similar stage. Enjoy
the draft as I will and thanks for reading.

Do Lottery Players Equal NBA Success?

The title of the article pretty much sums it up – do the number of lottery drafted players on a NBA team’s roster affect the team’s outcome on the court? At first blush the obvious answer would be yes – more often than not talent wins out on the court, so more talent on a roster should equal more wins. On the other side of the coin, normally the worst teams in the league are the ones drafting in the lottery, so therefore crummy teams should have their rosters saturated with lottery picks.

Your trusty writer went about trying to answer this question by perusing all 30 NBA team’s rosters from the 2006/07 season. Any player who appeared in at least one game for a team qualified to be counted towards that team’s lottery player total, so lottery players who were traded during the season counted on multiple team’s totals. After all the number crunching, NBA teams had on an average about five players on their roster who were selected in the lottery. Here are the teams that disobeyed the average and were at the far ends of the spectrum:

Top of the heap:

Golden State – 9 players (Davis, Richardson, Biedrins, Dunleavy, Diogu, Foyle, O’Bryant, Pietrus, Wagner)

Denver – 8 players (Anthony, Iverson, Camby, Hilario, Miller, Smith, Martin, Johnson)

Miami – 8 players (Wade, O’Neal, Williams, Mourning, Walker, Payton, Jones, Doleac)

All three teams made the playoffs, so talent does get you that far. Miami’s stockpiling of veteran lottery picks (and some kid named Wade) got them the title in 2006. It’s hard to say if the Nuggets’ motley crew of lottery picks will ever be able to play together as a team and really make some noise in the playoffs. Golden State’s big mid-season trade took away some of the lottery talent, but they had enough left over to shock Dallas in the first round of the playoffs.

Bottom feeders:

Indiana – 2 players (Dunleavy, Diogu)

Milwaukee – 2 players (Bogut, Villanueva)

San Antonio – 3 players (Duncan, Horry, Ely)

Utah – 3 players (Williams, Harpring, Brewer)

Until their mid-season trade with Golden State, Indiana didn’t have any lottery picks on their team – and they suffered through a horrible season. Milwaukee also had a horrible year but at least their lottery talent is young still. The real interesting two are the Spurs and the Jazz, who battled in the Western Conference Finals this past season. These two teams proved it doesn’t matter what spot you draft a player at, rather it is more important to draft and/or trade smart. While having lottery picks Tim Duncan and Deron Williams on their rosters definitely help, it is the later picks that really make the difference for both teams – Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur.

While it is hard to draw a definitive conclusion from all of this, the main point that these numbers illustrates is that a pick in the lottery isn’t a guaranteed ticket to a championship. Unless that pick is named Duncan or O’Neal or probably Oden and/or Durant. So draft wisely NBA GMs, even those of you who aren’t in the lottery this year.

Charlotte Bobcats: NBA Draft Team Needs

2007-08 Record: 32-50; 4th Southeast

Draft Picks: 9, 38

How they got here and what they need

The Bobcats added some much needed experience in the form of Jason Richardson heading into last season, shipping first round selection Brandan Wright to Golden State in order to make it happen. Gerald Wallace was one of the better swingmen in the East throughout the season, but it still didn't translate into wins on the court. But with their youngsters gaining more experience and Adam Morrison due back from his knee injury, the Bobcats could be poised to sneak into the playoffs next season. And when you take into consideration the fact that Atlanta only had thirty-seven wins and made the playoffs this season, it may not take much to do so.

In regards to their first round pick, Charlotte can go in a couple different directions. If they're not fully confident in Morrison's recovery, they could go with a swingman. Or they could try to find a backup point guard for Raymond Felton. Or they could also go big, with a number of big men on the board who have a lot of upside. It'll be interesting to see how new head coach Larry Brown goes about making this decision.

Who they take

It'll be a tough decision to make, but I think that the Bobcats will select West Virginia's Joe Alexander, a guy who's been rising up draft boards since team workouts began. And when you consider this past season was his first as being a true "go-to guy", he may have only just tapped his potential.

Lottery Lowdown: Part Two

This is Part Two of Adam
Stanco's

Lottery Lowdown, a Two-part look at what the Draft means for the Top 14
picks.

7. Minnesota Timberwolves

Kevin Garnett needs help.
Desperately. Randy Foye is the only other player on the Minnesota roster who
scares opponents.

The Timberwolves could use help at
the point guard, swing, and center positions meaning they could go in multiple
directions on draft day. And it all comes down to how much the pick can help
Garnett.

Joakim Noah would provide Garnett
with a big boost on the defensive end of the floor, Mike Conley or Acie Law
would give Garnett his best lead guard counterpart since Stephon Marbury, and
Julian Wright would get Garnett better looks than he’s ever had. However, KG
needs to play alongside a legit star as soon as possible and none of those
prospects will be playing at an elite level in the NBA anytime soon.

8. Charlotte Bobcats

Between Raymond Felton, Gerald
Wallace, Adam Morrison, Sean May, and Emeka Okafor, Charlotte is quietly
stockpiling talent in Charlotte.

But the muli-dimensional Wallace
might not be a Bobcat for very long. Despite the team’s desire to retain him,
the free agent-to-be will most likely sign elsewhere. The loss would be huge for
Charlotte, considering how good Wallace is on the defensive end of the floor.

If Wallace isn’t retained, expect
Charlotte to make a major push for Corey Brewer. The former Florida swingman
will be an excellent defender on the next level and his offensive repertoire is
impressive. He can shoot with range and attack the hoop. However, Brewer is one
of the fastest-rising prospects in the draft and it is unlikely that he’ll be
available for the Bobcats.

If the Bobcats don’t move up and
Brewer is gone before they select, Jeff Green would be another solid fit.

9. Chicago Bulls (from New York
Knicks)

Turns out Isiah Thomas’s trade for
Eddy Curry wasn’t ridiculous. In October of 2005, the Knicks acquired Curry in a
five-player deal that also included this year’s draft pick. Thomas has long
insisted that he would take Curry over any player the Knicks could have selected
in this draft.

Obviously, that would have been a
hard sell if the Bulls had gotten one of the top two picks from the Knicks.
Instead, the Bulls will be selecting deep into the lottery without the
possibility of getting the second-best center originally thought to be available
because Roy Hibbert decided to return to Georgetown.

With Hibbert out of the mix,
expect the Bulls to take a long look at Washington big man Spencer Hawes. Hawes
is skilled, but his poor rebounding and complete lack of explosion could signal
disappointment on the NBA level.

10. Sacramento Kings

Was it really five years ago that
the Kings were on the verge of knocking the Lakers off their Western Conference
pedestal? Sacramento has gone from a league juggernaut, rubbing shoulders
amongst the league’s elite to completely lacking an identity.

Eric Musselman was fired after
just one season. One extremely frustrating season, that is. Trade rumors
commonly feature Mike Bibby and Brad Miller – the only remaining contributors
from those magnificent teams. The Ron Artest experiment made more waves from his
off-court issues than anything he did at Arco Arena, which could mean he might
not be back next season. Heck, the whole team – literally – would be moving if
the Maloofs had their way.

Having a pick this deep in the
lottery won’t singularly reverse the team’s fortunes, but it would be a nice
start on the road to recovery. If Joakim Noah is available at No. 10, the Kings
would be foolish not to select him. Noah would energize Sacramento and remind
fans of what Chris Webber used to do for them. Noah doesn’t resemble a young
C-Webb, but his game does. The son of Yannick Noah and two-time NCAA champ is a
quick jumper and surprisingly adept at finding cutting teammates.

If Noah is off the board, the
Kings would probably target Spencer Hawes.

11. See

Part One For the Hawks 3rd and 11th picks.

12. Philadelphia 76ers

For the first time in over a
decade, the Sixers will start a season without Allen Iverson leading the team.
Andre Iguodala is now Philly’s marquis name, but there are questions about
whether he can be one of the league’s true stars. While Iguodala can defend as
well as anyone and is capable of huge scoring outbursts, he can’t shoot with any
consistency (31% from 3-pt) and he turns the ball over far too much.

Yet somehow the Sixers still
managed to acquire two players in the 2006 draft – Rodney Carney and Bobby Jones
– who are stunningly similar to Iggy. GM Billy King continues to draft shooting
guards and small forwards, despite having a roster that is full of them. Louis
Williams, Kyle Korver, Willie Green… The list goes on and on.

So don’t blame Philly fans for
their pessimism towards this draft.

Florida State’s Al Thornton might
just be the best available player at No. 12, but he’s an explosive scorer who
plays on the wing. Talented forwards Julian Wright of Kansas and Georgetown’s
Jeff Green are also potential picks who would struggle to find playing time on
this current Sixers team. Philly could also decide to go big and pick Spencer
Hawes or really reach for Colorado State’s Jason Smith.

The Sixers also have two picks
later in the first round which could be packaged together – or individually as
part of a deal with another member of the roster – to move up in the lottery.

13. New Orleans Hornets

Two years ago, the consensus of
those associated with the NBA was that Chris Paul was a much better player than
Deron Williams. The Jazz front office was repeatedly knocked for drafting the
former Illini over the former Demon Deacon in 2005.

But last year something changed.
The pro-Williams opinion started gaining momentum. It was building and building
and building until, finally, around the midway point of the season, Paul was
knocked from his perch. No longer was the Hornets’ lead man considered the best
young point guard in the NBA; that distinction now belonged to Williams.

Incredibly, their numbers were
eerily similar:

Chris Paul: 17.3 ppg, 8.9 apg,
4.4 rpg, 1.84 spg, 43.7% FG, 36.8 mpg

Deron Williams: 19.2 ppg, 8.6
apg, 4.3 rpg, 1.0 spg, 45.6% FG, 36.9 mpg

The difference – in the public’s
mind – was their team’s records. Utah won 51 games, yet the Hornets won just 39.
But Williams really separated himself during the postseason, performing
brilliantly, while Paul was home. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the
average beholder only gets to see small-market teams play during the playoffs.
That’s when unheralded talents are transformed into full-fledged stars.

What does all of this have to do
with this year’s draft?

If Paul is to regain his title, he
must do more than beat Williams in the numbers game. He must get his Hornets
into the playoffs and, consequently, onto a national stage. The only way it will
happen is if he gets help.

David West, Desmond Mason, and
Peja Stojakovic are all solid players, but not one of them is unstoppable. And
if Tyson Chandler becomes an all-star it will be because of his rebounding and
defensive capabilities, not his offensive gifts.

Look for the Hornets to add a wing
player who can score and who has serious star potential. USC’s Nick Young,
Thaddeus Young of Georgia Tech, FSU’s Al Thornton, or even Kansas stud Julian
Wright – if he slides – would all fit the bill.

14. Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers can not do anything
on draft day without deciding whether they will ever have Shaun Livingston back
to being Shaun Livingston. After Livingston’s grotesque knee injury, the
likelihood of a full recovery is minimal. While the team is hopeful, they must
also be realistic. And that means addressing their point guard needs
immediately.

In 2003, the Chicago Bulls faced a
remarkably similar situation. Jay Williams, the team’s phenomenally talented
court general, was badly injured in a motorcycle accident. The human side of
Bulls management was hopeful for his return. However, the business side
understood the importance of accepting Williams’s fate and dealing with it as
soon as possible. They snatched up Kirk Hinrich with the seventh overall pick
and, as evidenced by the team’s rapid ascension of late, the move paid off
greatly.

The Clippers should follow the
precedent Chicago set. Everyone in NBA circles is hopeful for Livingston’s
return, but successful organizations aren’t built on hope. They are built on
dealing with reality.

If the Clippers have the chance to
draft Acie Law or Javaris Crittenton, they shouldn’t hesitate. They should
simply follow their heads and not their hearts.
