Arizona Women's Basketball  Coach Joan Bonvicini

Coach Bonvicini is the winningest coach in Arizona Women's

history.  We'd like to thank her for taking the time to take part

in our Coaches Survey Series.

(CHN) How satisfied are you with the 'state of the program'? What do you think is needed for your program to the reach the next level?

I think we are back on track at the U of Arizona. We need to get back into the NCAA Tournament this year and feel we have the players, talent and attitude to get it done. For our program to reach the next level, we need to beat some ranked teams during the non-conference and PAC-10 season and to be consistent. We have done a good job in recruiting and need to continue to get top level players every year. You basically need to win the big games and have the attitude that we are the best team every night.

(CHN) On a similar note, what do you feel about the current state of the NCAA?
Are there any major problems with the institution of College Basketball?

The NCAA is constantly evolving and changing rules and/or entrance requirements. Basically, all athletic rules are changed or added because of discretions and violations from universities. Or someone gains a significant competitive advantage. The major issues in Women's College Basketball is a continued need for more media coverage and to have other teams get to the Final Four.

(CHN) Do you look for specific players to take important leadership roles each year? Who do you expect to fill that role this season?

Dee Dee Wheeler, the PAC-10 Freshman of the Year is ready for a breakout season. I would also look to Krista Warren to significantly increase her numbers in scoring and rebounding. Additionally, Shawntinice Polk will be a major player on the National level.

(CHN) How do you feel about the newcomers to this year's squad? Who do you think will be a major contributor right away?

The two major contributors will be Shawntinice Polk and Natalie Jones. Polkey is a 6'5" post who will dominate offensively and defensively. Natalie is a combo guard at 5'9" and possess good offensive and defensive skills.

(CHN) What are your reasonable expectations for this year's team?

Our expectations are to finish in the to 2-3 in the PAC-10 and get back to the NCAA Tournament.

(CHN) Is there anything else you'd like to tell Wildcat fans, and basketball fans around the country?

Shawntinice Polk will be a major player and recognized across the country before the year is out.

(CHN)Don't forget to check out Coach Bonvicini's basketball camp:
