College Basketball NewsFlash

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, CHN will be brining you the latest news and commentary from the world of college basketball.  Each NewsFlash will feature three important news stories, and sharp commentary on the relevancy of the story.

Story: Wake Wins, But Vulnerable

CHN’s preseason #1 team Wake Forest won their season-opener over George Washington 97-76 on Monday in the Preseason NIT.  Chris Paul and Justin Gray led the way, scoring 25 and 18 points, respectively.

My Take:

The Wakesters looked vulnerable at home, committing 20 turnovers and giving up 42 first-half points.  However, CHN preseason first-team All-America Paul made a great first case of the young season for Player of the Year honors, shooting 7-12 from the field and 10-12 from the line while racking up 6 assists in a stirring performance by the precocious point guard.

Story: Travis Diener on Fire

Marquette improved to 3-0 with a 69-65 victory in the championship game of the Black Coaches Association Classic over Air Force on Tuesday night.  Travis Diener, a second team preseason All-America by CHN, hit five three pointers en route to a game-high 34 points for the Golden Eagles.

My Take:

So far Diener, who has averaged 25.7 points and 5.0 assists per outing through three games, appears to have the moxie and talent to help Marquette, a team that fell off the map in 2003-2004 after reaching the Final Four the season before, make some noise.

Story: Arizona For Real?

Three Wildcats scored at least 20 points in Arizona’s 80-69 win over San Diego on Tuesday in their first-round Preseason NIT contest.  Arizona exploded in the first-half to lead by 18 at the break before cruising to victory.

My Take:

Not only did the victory grab some press for the preseason-pub-lacking ‘Cats, point guard Mustafa Shakur turned some heads in exhibiting the full range of his talent, racking up 23 points, 7 assists, and 8 boards.
