Many of the best high school ballers came to Hackensack, N.J. last week to showcase their skills in front of the many college coaches and NBA scouts at this year’s Reebok ABCD camp July 7-11.

Even though the talk of the camp centered around top prospects 7’0 center Greg Oden from Lawrence North High (IN) and 6’9 power forward Derrick Caracter from St. Patrick’s High (NJ) there were plenty of other candidates that were looking to add their names as the best overall prospects in any class.

The Class of 2005 was firmly represented by talented junior 6’6 Brandon Rush from Mount Zion Academy (NC) who averaged 12.3 points and two blocks per game throughout the camp going into Sunday’s all-star game. Rush scored 21 points in the contest for the East in a losing effort 178-167 but still managed to be named co-MVP along with West sensation 6’8 SF Gerald Green who led all scorers in the game with 27.  “It feels good to know that my name is going to be up there on both banners,” Rush said. “I didn’t feel like I played all that well this week, but this is really great.”  Rush was also named MVP of last year’s game for underclassmen.

Green, from Gulf Shore Academy (TX) averaged 17 points and 5 rebounds in just 4 games; Green also grabbed MVP honors of the camp.

Along with Rush was 6’8 forward Leo Criswell from Piper High (KS) who averaged 15.5 points while grabbing 6 rebounds per game for all six games.  Danny Green, a 6’5 guard from St Mary’s High (NY) was as solid as they come, netting 14.8 points and 6 rebounds per game. The highlight of his week came on Saturday night when he scored 26 points and 10 boards.

One player trying to make a mark as a future prospect was 6’7 Taylor King from Mater Dei High (CA) by scoring 13 points in the second quarter in Saturday’s featured match up that pitted highly touted Greg Oden and Derrick Caracter.

SG Nate Minnoy from Hales Franciscan (IL) started out on fire in the opening sessions Wednesday and Thursday by averaging 18 points per game with games of over 20 in his first four games before cooling off.

Ohio native O.J. Mayo, a 6’5 guard out of North College Hill High made one of the biggest impacts of the week with his with his dominating play helping his team to a 135-132 over the West in the underclass all-star game. He had 19 points, seven boards and 5 assists claiming the MVP award for the game. “It’s a truly great accomplishment,” Mayo said. “But I have bigger goals. I want to go to the NBA, make it to the Hall of Fame and be remembered in this game. That’s my ultimate goal.”

Other notables in the underclass all-star game were Robert Thomas (18 pts), Lance Thomas (17 pts), Eric Wallace (15 pts), Curtis Kelly (14 pts) and Dwayne Collins (11 pts).

Players that lived up to the hype in the senior all-star game were Tasmin Mitchell (17 pts), Shawn Taggart (16 pts), Amir Johnson (17 pts), Bobby Frasor (14 pts) and Jonathan Kale (15 pts).
