ABCD Camp Day Three: Players H to M

79 - Daniel Hackett (2007) - Downey, CA - 6’5 - 198 - 76ers

The more I watch Hackett, the more I love his game. He is just simply a scorer, and loves to get the ball to the rim. I don’t know if he’s a highly ranked prospect or not, but he definitely should be. When he drives, he can both dribble and finish with both hands, and it really keeps the defense off balance. Also, unlike so many guys who seem to only drive from the baseline, Hackett likes to come straight down the lane. Very nice.

168 - Ray Hall - Denver, CO - 7’0 - 250 - Clippers

Hall played well today. He really likes to use his behind to block out, which is a good thing because he’s got a big body and a big behind. On offense, he showed some good footwork, making a nice spin move in the post, though he was called for using arm to fend off the defender. The foul doesn’t matter, so much as showing he has the ability to make that kind of quick move. He does need to work on finishing in traffic, as he exposes the ball up high when going up for dunks which will make it exposable to blocked shots.

81 - Paul Harris - Niagara Falls, NY - 6’5 - 225 - Celtics

Harris was the man tonight, facing OJ Mayo. Defensively, he was just constantly in Mayo’s face, and he never let the heralded point guard beat him off the dribble. The only thing stopping Harris from being an NBA-caliber player at this point is a lack of a jump shot.

186 - Idris Hilliard (2007) - Roselle, NJ - 6’7 - 205 - Hawks

Hilliard’s another guy who I only watched for the first time today. He’s a good looking athlete and performed well against the very solid Daniel Hackett. He wasn’t constantly in the flow of the game, but would make a very impressive play every few minutes and then disappear. He made one great snatch rebound where he got up and grabbed the ball right at the peak of his jump.

56 - Blake Hoffarber (2007) - Minnetonka, MN - 6’3 - 190 - 76ers

Rather quiet game for Hoffarber in the afternoon, though he did hit a pair of threes. In the half court, he doesn’t offer much beyond the three, so he always looks better when the game is played at a fast pace.

134 - Dennis Horner - Linwood, NJ - 6’8 - 195 - Jazz

Horner, who I know nothing about, caught my eye today with solid play. He was particularly impressive on defense, where he ended up guarding little guards and power forwards in the same game. He definitely needs to hit the weight room, and his upper body is particularly undeveloped, but he has good long arms and can be a very effective defender. On offense he was rather quiet, except for one 60 second period, where he drove to the lane and scored, and then followed that up with a three on the next possession. He can definitely contribute on any level.

83 - Maurice Hubbard (2008) - Centreville, VA - 6’5 - 180 - Bulls

I haven’t seen too much out of Hubbard on the offensive end, though he does a nice job of positioning for rebounds. His decision making process is a bit to slow at this point, and he’s just not mature physically yet.

28 - Trevon Hughes - Rosedale, NY - 6’1 - 190 - Magic

Some readers brought up a good point about the fact that Hughes had been hurt for a few weeks leading up to the camp, which probably accounted for why he looked like he wasn’t giving it his all in the earlier days. He still looked like he’s just not 100% here mentally, but there’s no doubt he has a nice shot from long range.

29 - Brandon Jennings (2008) - Lakewood, CA - 6’1 - 150 - Jazz

Nothing exceptional to note from Jennings today. He made an assortment of solid passes, and he really uses the look away pass to his advantage (which both gets the crowd into it, but also simply deceives the defense.) When he’s in the open court, he uses both hands with ease.

162 - Marques Johnson - Fort Wayne, IN - 6’6 - 205 - Wizards

To be honest, I expected more out of Johnson this week. Though perhaps my expectations are unfairly high because he’s simply a solid yet unspectacular player. He manages to get into the lane with ease, and can finish because he’s such a good athlete, but his game needs refinement. His outside shot is simply not that pretty, and he seems to rely too much on his natural talent.

132 - Damion Jones - Nacogdoches, TX - 6’8 - 225 - Hawks

Jones was much more active this afternoon than earlier in the week. He’s such a great athlete, and he was putting it all on the court today facing Bill Walker. To be honest, Jones was simply outworking Walker, and it paid off on both ends of the floor. He finishes with strength, and not just when dunking. Perhaps his only fault, especially noticeable in the evening, was that he was trying to do a bit too much handling the ball in the open court.

199 - Franklin Jones - Niagara Falls, NY - 7’0 - 275 - 76ers

Jones is a big boy, who is definitely a project. He doesn’t have much lift, and when he gets the ball down low, it definitely stays exposed to long, making him a blocked shot waiting to happen.

177 - DeAndre Jordan (2007) - Houston, TX - 6’10 - 215 - Cavs

Jordan was definitely impressive today. My understanding is that he’s sort of burst onto the scene in recent months, but he deserves the respect. When he gets the ball down low, he doesn’t lumber around, but makes nice quick, decisive moves. While he’s not an explosive finisher yet, he gets the ball in the hole with his soft hands.

66 - Daye Kaba - Selden, NY - 6’4 - 195 - Magic

I really enjoy watching Kaba play. He reminds slightly of Ben Gordon, both physically and in that he’s very quick and dangerous one on one. Apparently his go-to shot is a dribble drive from the top of the key to the right side foul-line extended, where he pulls up for the short jumper. I’ve seen him make that move a few times over the week when time is about to expire.

129 - Taylor King (2007) - Huntington Beach, CA - 6’8 - 210 - Hawks

King spent a little more time on the inside in this afternoon’s game, and it makes all the difference in his game. Simply standing 40 feet away from the hole will not cut it, no matter how much range he has. When he’s in the post or facing up from short range, even though he’s not the fastest kid nor the best finisher, he uses good footwork and manages to get to the basket quite often. On the other hand, when he tries to drive from the three-point line, it usually doesn’t work because he doesn’t have the quick first step to blow by guys and the defender just stays right in his face without worry.

200 - Kevin Love (2007) - Lake Oswego, OR - 6’9 - 250 - Mavs

Love was rock-solid as usual. He’s simply a load for defenders to handle, and he quietly puts up big numbers every game. I love how Love always runs to the block, and then constantly works to seal off his man and get position with his back to the basket. On defense, he’s not a great help-side defender like an Aldrich, but Love is better one on one. He simply makes himself large by keeping both of his hands straight up, and doesn’t need to go crazy jumping out of shoes to make blocks.

104 - OJ Mayo (2007) - Cincinnati, OH - 6’5 - 210 - 76ers

Today was not Mayo’s best. If you came to gym and only saw him today, you’d leave wondering what all the hype was about. When the game is played in the half-court, he’s just not nearly as effective. Mainly because he seems content to just settle for the three, and when it doesn’t go down like today he looks selfish. He did hit a half-court shot at the buzzer which was pretty awesome though. In the evening, Mayo was simply outplayed by Paul Harris. Harris really brought the game to Mayo, and didn’t give him any room to drive to the basket. Mayo looked so intent on scoring, that he was forcing up threes and did not do a good job getting his teammates in the action. The evening was probably the worst I’ve ever seen Mayo play.

59 - Demetri McCamey (2007) - Bellwood, IL - 6’3 - 197 - Cavs

McCamey played much better today than when I first watched him on Wednesday. He’s just a tough, and highly efficient player. He can both hit the three, and take it inside and finish with strength. His highlight play of the day was a drive down low where he exposed the ball to draw the wild shot blocker, then brought it back in as he got fouled, and finished for the basket and one.

69 - Jodie Meeks - Norcross, GA - 6’4 - 200 - Lakers

Meeks played his usual game today, specializing in mid-range scores. His shot has almost no rotation, and I’m not comfortable when he shoots from outside of 10-15 feet.

176 - Ilija Milutinovic - Belgrade, Serbia - 6’10 - 225 - Warriors

Nothing new on this guy’s front today. He just needs to pick up the pace on his moves down low. He’s just too methodical and slow to be an effective scorer right now.
