College Basketball: Monday Mailbag

By Joel Welser

Joel’s Monday Mailbag

Each Monday, Joel Welser will be bringing you his Monday Mailbag.  If you have a question which you'd like Joel to answer, email jwelser_chn@ameritech.net.  He’ll post and answer as many questions as possible.  Please include your first name and home state when contacting Joel.

One question each week is chosen as the "Question of the Week", and is answered by a few CHN staffers.  At the end of each Monday Mailbag, Joel presents his "Team of the Week" and his "Thoughts of the Week."  Visit the Mailbag Archive for past installments.

In this special edition of the Monday Mailbag, I’ll ask questions about Selection Sunday and answer them myself.  Amazingly, even though they’re my own questions, I still don’t have answers for most of these...

What is the best first round match-up?

I’m looking forward to seeing Arizona play Utah State.  I’d have the Aggies beating any other #3 seed out there, but Arizona should be too athletic for the Big West squad.

Which first round match-ups have upset written all over them?

It could be craziness in Worcester, Massachusetts.  Watch out for Old Dominion over Michigan State and Vermont over Syracuse.  It’s a grouping with some great big men with Alex Loughton (ODU) and Taylor Coppenrath (Vermont).  Paul Davis will have his hands full.  Vermont could have a road to the Sweet Sixteen with this draw, but they could have an early exit as well if Syracuse continues playing like they have been lately.

Which team should have made it in but didn’t?

DePaul, Buffalo, Miami (OH), Notre Dame.  The list goes on but all of these teams had their chance and didn’t get it done.  When it comes down to it, it is there own fault, not the committee’s.

Which team made it in but shouldn’t have?

Basketball Ads

Northern Iowa and UAB were probably the last two in.  They probably don’t deserve it any more than DePaul or Notre Dame or Miami (OH), but for whatever reason those two were chosen.  I can’t fault the committee for making a tough decision, although the MAC can feel a little slighted, but they shouldn’t be surprised.

Looking ahead, which games a round or two into the tourney appear to be interesting?

How about Cincinnati and Kentucky in the second round…not a bad regional match-up of local rivals, although I think Iowa gets the win over Cincy at this point.

Roy Williams’ old team versus Roy’s new team is a potential Elite Eight game.

Washington and Wake Forest are lined up to face each other in the Elite Eight.  One hundred points might not be enough to win that game.  If you like defense, I’d skip that one and look ahead to next year’s Washington State squad.

Which region is the toughest?

The Syracuse region with UNC, UConn, Kansas, Florida and Villanova is probably the toughest, taking the top five seeds into account.  Any of those teams could go to the Final Four.  If you want to factor in all the seeds, I’d have to say Chicago is more difficult.  Texas can give Illinois trouble.  LSU is a potential Sweet Sixteen surprise.  Southern Illinois is a really good team.  Wisconsin-Milwaukee has been a Cinderella favorite for a few weeks.  Upset’s are waiting all over the Chicago region.

Which group of four teams is the most competitive?

The group in Boise with LSU, UAB, Arizona and Utah State is tough and fun.  In better draws, I’d have any of those teams in the Sweet Sixteen (but UAB is more due to my obsession with Squeaky Johnson and less to do with their team, yet they did do it last year).  Either way it will be a battle for one of these teams to make it to the Sweet Sixteen.

Who got a good draw?

Alabama.  Wisconsin-Milwaukee is a tough, tough team at a 12 seed, but looking ahead, Bama should be able to make it to the Sweet Sixteen over Boston College.

Wisconsin.  Kansas is the Badgers potential second round match-up and they have been nothing but inconsistent lately.  The Badgers are always a steady, smart team.  Waiting beyond that for Bo Ryan’s squad is Connecticut, but I’m not too certain the Huskies will make it that far with a second round game against the winner of Charlotte and NC State.

Who got a bad draw?

Arizona.  This team is a potential Final Four squad, but it won’t be easy from day one.  Oklahoma State is a bad match-up for Arizona down the road and Illinois may wait for the Wildcats after that.

My team didn’t make the NCAAs…should I care about the NIT?

If you want to care than knock yourself out.  Don’t go out complaining about how meaningless it is though.  It may be meaningless to some heartbroken fans, but it will help your team for next season, whether any fans are paying attention or not.
