Unsung Player of the Week

announced that East Tennessee State' Tim Smith was named the nation’s
Unsung Player of the Week, for the period ending February 25th, 2004. The
5-9 sparkplug averaged 26.5 points per game in a pair of Bucs
victories.
Just
a sophomore, Smith scored a career high 27 points in a win over
UT-Chattanooga and added 26 in a big win at Fresno State as part of
ESPN's Bracket Buster Saturday. The Newport News, VA native also
averaged 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and shot 54% for the week.
With
the two wins, ETSU extended their school-best winning streak to 16
games, improved to 24-4 overall and 15-0 in Southern Conference play.
Smith has been a major factor in the Bucs success, leading the team in
scoring and assists with 16.1 and 4.4 game. First year coach
Murray Bartow inherited a team that went 20-11 last season, and almost
upset Wake Forest in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
This week’s
finalists for Unsung Player of the Week honors include Jitim Young of
Northwestern, Paul Haynes of Grambling, and Wagner's Nigel Wyatte.
