#122 Texas Christian Horned Frogs

CUSA

2003-04: 12-17, 7-9, 9th

2003-04 postseason: none

By Joel Welser

The big wins didn’t happen too often last year, but TCU beat Marquette twice and slaughtered Louisville 71-46 on national TV.  They remained consistent and finished a very respectable 7-9 in CUSA.  Returning four starters should make the expectations a little higher.

Who’s Out: Staring guard Nucleus Smith will be missed.  He scored nearly nine points per game during his senior season.  Smith wasn’t a major presence on the floor but put in some quality minutes and quietly filled the stat sheets.  Little used Ronald Hobbs has also used up all of his eligibility.

Who’s In: Head coach Neil Dougherty brings in a couple shooting guards for this class.  Neiman Owens and Brent Hackett both should see a few minutes off the bench.  Owens is a good athlete who can push the ball up the floor and Hackett is a great outside shooter who can light it up on any given day.  Also coming in this year is Nile Murry, a transfer from Temple.

Who to Watch: Flint, Michigan, native Corey Santee will be the man to watch for TCU.  During his junior season Santee averaged 14.5 points and 4.4 assists per game.  His numbers were a little higher for his sophomore season, but Santee lost a lot of his targets going into last season.  This year almost everybody is back so the numbers should be going back up.  And if that happens, the win total in Fort Worth will also go up.

Projected Conference Rank: Conference USA had six teams invited to the NCAA Tournament last year.  Finishing anywhere near that top six is no easy task for a school that hasn’t made the big dance since 1998.  The Horned Frogs could break .500 in conference next year and, once again, finish in 9th place.

Projected Post-season Tournament: none
