#131 Troy State Trojans
2003-04: 24-7, 18-2, 1st
Atlantic Sun
By
Joel Welser
(This preview was corrected on
July 15th to account for losses of Lewin & Davis)
Troy
State went 18-2 in conference last year and 24-7 overall and earned a trip
to the NIT. They lost a heartbreaker to Niagara 87-83 in the opening round
of that tournament. This squad will have a chance to try it again, but with
many new faces. They have the talent ready to step in and compete for the
Atlantic Sun title.
Who’s Out: Rob Lewin and
Greg Davis are the big losses for Troy. Lewin averaged 15.4 points per game
and led the squad with eight rebounds. Greg Davis led the team with 15.5
points per game and assists with 8.3. Starters Kendrick Johnson and Herbert
Evans will also be greatly missed. Johnson and Evans both averaged over 11
points and five rebounds per game last year.
Who’s In: Three Junior
College players will step in this year for coach Don Maestri. Ransom
Antoine, Richard Damus and Leon Woodstock could all make early contributions
for the Trojans.
Who to Watch: Jerome
Stamper will have to step in and be the star of the Trojans. The 6-5 senior
is the returning leading scorer with 9.4 points per game last season.
Stamper has decent shooting range and is a great rebounder. His ability to
do it all can cause nightmares for the opposing defenses. As a sophomore,
Stamper played at Iowa Western Community College where he scored nearly 17
points and grabbed nine boards per game. As a freshman at Compton College,
Stamper led all California junior college players with four steals per
game.
Projected Conference Rank:
The competition in the Atlantic Sun will be fierce at the top. Central
Florida, Belmont and Georgia State will all have strong teams. The Trojans
will slip down into a very close 3rd place finish.
Projected Post-season
Tournament: none
